Patent number: 5184773Abstract: A pressure relief function is incorporated into a proportional solenoid controlled heater valve for an automobile heater. One of two internal valve seats is spring-biased against an internal shoulder and is exposed to pressure differential across it. When inlet pressure from the engine coolant pump seeks to rise above a predetermined level, the spring-loaded seat unseats thereby diverting some of the flow away from the heater core and back to the pump inlet.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1992Date of Patent: February 9, 1993Assignee: Siemens Automotive LimitedInventor: Gary M. Patent number: 5181533Abstract: A controllable dispenser which dispenses an aqueous solution of a soluble substance. The dispenser has an inlet to accept a supply of water and an outlet to discharge the solution. The dispenser includes a container having a chamber, where the soluble substance is placed, and a passage surrounding the chamber. The chamber is longitudinally in line with the inlet and outlet. The water entering the device is able to flow through both the chamber and the passage. The fluid flowing through the passage functions as a carrier of the solution to the outlet. The chamber is defined at both ends by an orifice. Various chambers may be used, each having a different diameter and different size orifices, one allowing a greater rate of flow than another, thereby increasing the level of concentration or the rate of solubility. The device is preferably constructed of a transparent material which enables the user to observe the amount of soluble substance remaining in the chamber.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1991Date of Patent: January 26, 1993Inventor: Rick F. Patent number: 5181532Abstract: Using conventional manufacturing methods, porous, sintered, compacted powder bodies shaped as straight cylinders can be produced with extremely small variations in their flow resistance to a fluid. According to the invention, such bodies are produced in series so that, for a certain fluid and a certain pressure drop above the body, they produce a predetermined flow which can easily be regulated by using simple pressure-regulating equipment for controlling the pressure drop. The invention comprises an apparatus consisting of a pipe with pressure-regulating means, a container for a body according to the invention, and a series of bodies with different flow resistance for setting different flow intervals in the pipe for given fluids. The invention also comprises a method for setting a predetermined flow for a specific fluid at a given pressure, and the use of well defined porous bodies enabling a desired pressure to be set by regulating the pressure drop across the body.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1992Date of Patent: January 26, 1993Inventors: Lage Brodefors, Lars Irstam

Patent number: 5178181Abstract: A fertilizer applicator is provided for use with a sprinkler line system. The applicator comprises a fertilizer container with integrally formed internal inlet and outlet tubes. Water is fed through an inlet-outlet tube into the bottom of the fertilizer container, where it dissolves or dilutes some of the solid or liquid fertilizer and forms a leached, concentrated solution. This concentrate continuously rises through the fertilizer and into the outlet tube where it drains downwardly. The concentrate is then diluted with water coming through the inlet-outlet tube including a venturi, the size of which controls the flow rate of the concentrate. The diluted concentrate is then passed into the sprinkler system for application to vegetation. The applicator has a single piece, simplified design, without moving parts, and does not leak fertilizer into the drain.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1991Date of Patent: January 12, 1993Inventor: James Craig

Patent number: 5178189Abstract: During the assembly steps of a rotary valve, after an input shaft is attached onto a torsion bar, the input shaft is rotated clockwise and counterclockwise concentrically with the torsion bar. A central position is thus detected and determined such that a hydraulic pressure, which is generated when the input shaft is rotated by some angle clockwise from the central position relative to an output shaft, is symmetrical with a hydraulic pressure generated when the input shaft is rotated by the same angle counterclockwise from the central position. While the determined central position of the input shaft in a peripheral direction relative to the torsion bar is maintained, the input shaft is axially secured. By pulling the torsion bar further into the input shaft, an engaging portion of the torsion bar engages in a securing bore of the input shaft.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 1992Date of Patent: January 12, 1993Assignee: TRW Steering & Industrial Products (Japan) Co., Ltd.Inventor: Yasunobu Mitoya

Patent number: 5178178Abstract: A valve assembly is provided for controlling pressurized inputs from two separate fluid sources, and in particular to provide enhanced isolation between the sources and to buffer short-term fluctuations in fluid flow. A high pressure chamber is provided which is separated into two chamber portions by a fluid-impervious flexible membrane. A valve, such as a ball valve, having a movable member is positioned in an inlet port in each channel portion, fluid flowing, for a preferred enbodiment, from a fluid source under pressure through the inlet port of a chamber portion, an output port in the portion and a restrictor to a mixer. A pressure differential in the chamber portions deflects the diaphragm to bear against the movable member in the lower pressure chamber portion, closing the valve for this chamber portion before the pressure is sufficient to result in any backflow therethrough.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 1991Date of Patent: January 12, 1993Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventor: Hans-Georg Hartl

Patent number: 5174335Abstract: To evacuate a vacuum chamber without stirring up particles in the chamber or associated piping, a pneumatically-actuated vacuum valve is used between the chamber and the vacuum pump. The valve controls evacuation in two stages: in the first stage, the valve partially opens, and a skirt with leak vents in it is brought into play so that air is drawn slowly through the leak vents to gradually achieve a vacuum of a few Torr without stirring up particles; in the second stage, the valve fully opens, and the remaining air in the chamber can be drawn out efficiently, utilizing the large diameter of the valve fully, without risk of stirring up particles. The actuation of the valve is controlled by a timer, which dictates how long the valve stays in the partially-open state before switching to the fully-open state.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1992Date of Patent: December 29, 1992Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha Com.Inventor: Toshiaki Iwabuchi
