Abstract: An electronic device having a keyboard, display, and a processor is presented. The keyboard includes a plurality keys with at least a subset of the plurality of keys having a plurality of indicia, each key in the subset having a primary and secondary conductor. The primary conductor can be associated with a first set of indicia. The first set of indicia can include one or more indicia. The secondary conductor can be associated with a second set of indicia. The second set of indicia can include the one or more indicia that are not in the first set. The processor can be communicatively coupled to the keyboard and the display. The processor receives an input based on the secondary conductor associated with the given key, and outputs data to the display to display a list of characters corresponding to the plurality of indicia of the given key.

  • Patent number: 9140818
Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining position in a pipe provides for the precise determination of location and associated characteristics of each pipe joint of a well, cross country pipeline or other fluid transmission line. The system includes a passive or active radio identification device at each joint in the pipe or casing string. The devices are preferably sealed within the resilient seal positioned between each pipe or casing joint. A pipeline tool includes a radio transmitter and receiver, with the transmitter transmitting on a frequency selected for resonating the identification devices. The resonant response of each device is detected by a receiver in the pipeline tool, with the response transmitted to the surface via the wireline to which the tool is connected. Alternatively, the tool may include storage information means until the tool can be recovered from the well or pipe.

  • Patent number: 9123238
Abstract: A method to allow vehicles of low metallic mass to trip an inductive loop detector at a traffic light by first matching the loop detector's running frequency, then, while monitoring, raising the frequency of the loop detector through normal transformer action with a transducer that is in close proximity to the loop detector, until the frequency of the transmissions from the transducer and that of the loop detector just start to diverge. This is the point at which maximal influence is achieved over the loop detector's running frequency commensurate with the transformer couple that exists between transducer and loop detector. Since the initially encountered (uninfluenced) frequency of the loop detector is measured, and the degree of increase subsequently induced is known in real time, a display can be provided for the user showing not only that a loop has been detected, but also the degree of influence achieved.

  • Patent number: 9030913
Abstract: The disclosure describes a method and apparatus for effectively communicating data along an acoustic transmission path. The method comprises driving an acoustic transmitter to send a data signal along the acoustic transmission path, where the signal is distorted by ambient noise. The distorted signal is input to a spaced apart plurality of sensors so that consequent time-delayed signals provide reinforcement of the basic signal and attenuation of the ambient noise component when combined.

  • Patent number: 9024790
Abstract: Keyboards, keypads and other data entry devices can suffer from a keying ambiguity problem. In a small keyboard, for example, a user's finger is likely to overlap from a desired key to onto adjacent ones. An iterative method of removing keying ambiguity from a keyboard comprising an array of capacitive keys involves measuring a signal strength associated with each key in the array, comparing the measured signal strengths to find a maximum, determining that the key having the maximum signal strength is the unique user-selected key, and maintaining that selection until either the initially selected key's signal strength drops below some threshold level or a second key's signal strength exceeds the first key's signal strength.

  • Patent number: 9019120
Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed for monitoring water leaks within a home. A home network with various devices monitors these devices with a controller. Information is received from a water flow meter via a transceiver for tracking a total water flow amount through pipelines in the home. By comparing information collected to a predetermined threshold, a leak is determined as present or not within each pipeline. Upon the detection of a leak in the home, a home owner is notified of the condition so that action is taken expeditiously. A shut off valve can be triggered remotely when a request is received from the user, which closes the water pipeline to prevent water damage.

  • Patent number: 9007233
Abstract: Aspects of this invention include a downhole assembly having a non-contact, capacitive coupling including first and second transceivers deployed in corresponding first and second downhole tool members. The capacitive coupling is disposed to transfer electrical signals between the first and second transceivers. In one exemplary embodiment, the capacitive coupling is configured to transfer data and power between a substantially non-rotating tool member and a rotating tool member, for example, the shaft and blade housing in a steering tool. Exemplary embodiments of this invention provide a non-contact, high-speed data communication channel between first and second members of a downhole assembly. Moreover, exemplary embodiments of the invention also provide for simultaneous non-contact transmission of electrical power between the first and second tool members.

  • Patent number: 9000957
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a system and method for typing Ethiopic characters in a computer system using at most two keystrokes. The rendering of characters is based on the timing between a first and second keystroke and on whether the first and second keystroke are, together, one of a predetermined number of ordered key pairs. Conventional symbol typing may be preserved by a prioritized assignment of the symbols to alternative shift keys. A timing disable key may be defined that allows typing of default characters at a comfortable speed.

  • Patent number: 8994556
Abstract: A data multi-hop sensing and threat detecting network, including modular sensor devices, smart plug and portable sensor devices, and low power sub-sensor devices. A determination is made to alert when a sensed value is either (1) greater than a predetermined upper threshold value or the running average baseline value (whichever is greater) plus the upper fluctuation buffer value, or (2) less than a predetermined lower threshold value or the running average baseline value (whichever is less) less the lower fluctuation buffer value. • Patent number: 8988249
Abstract: A wireless monitoring system comprises a remote asset about which data is to be collected and a wireless data-transfer device connected to the remote asset. The wireless device includes a radiofrequency transceiver and a chip having a memory for storing a plurality of subscriber identifiers corresponding to different wireless networks and for further storing logic that constitutes network selection rules for selecting one of the wireless networks to use for transmission of the data. In a GSM/UMTS implementation of this technology, the subscriber identifier is the IMSI and the chip is a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) chip or card. By using multiple IMSI's, the wireless data-transfer device connected to the remote asset may switch seamlessly between wireless networks. A new IMSI (for a new network) may be provisioned over the air to enable the device to communicate over a new network for which it did not previously have an IMSI.
