Abstract: Methods and apparatus for realizing dynamic point selection improve the cell-edge throughput and geometric mean of release 8/9 UEs. The method comprises a step of receiving estimated channel quality reported by all the TPs in the CoMP set, a step of switching the serving TP for the UEs based on the estimated channel quality and/or cell load, a step of forwarding the scheduled data from the primary TP to the serving TP, a step of separately transmitting PDCCH to the UEs by the primary TP and transmitting PDSCH to the UEs by the serving TP. the implementation of the method and apparatus improves the cell-edge throughput and geometric mean of UE throughput by serving UEs instantaneously from the cell that provides better throughput accounting for fast time-scale channel fluctuations and/or load. It helps in reducing interference due to data getting drained faster when users are served from cells with better channel conditions.

Abstract: A communication system comprises access points (203, 205) communicating via directional beams and a first and second wireless modem (111, 701) for establishing a first and respectively second mm wave radio communication links to access points (203, 205). The first and second wireless modems (111, 701) are located on a vehicle (103) and employ electronically steerable beamforming directional antennas having a first main beams for establishing the radio communication links. A common network element (705) supports communication over both links and a connection control circuit (1001) switches between the links. It further transmits an address resolution message over a link when switching to that link with the message comprising identification data for the common network element (705).

Abstract: Disclosed are techniques for wireless communication that over come problems associated with conventional approaches including load balancing and handover efficiency issues. For example, in one aspect a wireless communication technique takes into account the load of a relay before a UE is switched from one relay to another. In another example, a wireless communication technique ensures that UEs are handed over to relays that will be able to serve the UE as the mobile relay continues to follow its expected path (such as streets or tracks), which may be known or determined.
