Abstract: Dense star polymers on immobilized cores are very useful as ion-exchange resins and chelation resins. For example, an aminated form of chloromethylated styrene/divinyl benzene copolymer can be employed as an immobilized core compound and reacted successively with methyl acrylate via a Michael addition reaction and then with ethylenediamine to form a first generation dense star polymer or dendrimer. These reactions can then be repeated to form second and third generation dendrimers.
Abstract: A conductive polymer blend which comprises mixing a polyimide with a base-type polymer containing carbon-nitrogen linkages, such as polyaniline, having a polyimide-like group covalently linked to nitrogen atoms of the base-type polymer. The conductive polymer blend is formed by first reacting a base-type non-conductive polymer containing carbon-nitrogen linkages, such as polyaniline, with a carbonyl anhydride, such as 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride, to form a conductive polymer containing polyimide-like groups covalently linked to nitrogen atoms of the base-type polymer, mixing such conductive polymer with non-conductive polyimide in a suitable solvent, removing the solvent, and forming a conductive continuous phase blend of the polyimide and the conductive polymer.

Abstract: A process and apparatus is provided for making a rubber-like product from rubber scrap, such as recycled tire scrap. The process includes mixing the rubber scrap with from 1 percent to 15 percent, with respect to the weight of the rubber scrap, of added sulphur, and applying a pressure thereto of about 1000 to 3000 pounds per square inch for 1 to 10 minutes at a temperature of from about 250 degrees F. to about 450 degrees F. In addition, 1 to 8 percent, with respect to the weight of the rubber scrap, of antioxidants and antiozonants are added to the mixture of rubber scrap and sulphur. The sulphur is free sulphur. Derivative sulphur compounds, or like vulcanizing agents, can be added in place of the free sulphur of about 1 to 45 percent of the weight of the rubber scrap. The rubber scrap is buffing of recycled tire rubber, or powder made from recycled tire rubber. An apparatus for carrying out the process is also provided.

Abstract: Self-crosslinking cationic paint binders based on ureide-modified epoxy resins; the preparation of these binders and their use, particularly in electrodeposition paints, is described. The modification is effected with carboxylic compounds carrying ureide groups, blocked isocyanate groups and, optionally, tertiary amino groups. The carboxylic compounds are obtained through reaction of dicarboxylic acid anhydrides or compounds carrying dicarboxylic acid anhydrides with a substituted urea or a substituted biuret. The products show excellent resistance and adhesion characteristics.
Abstract: Production of base-type conductive polymers, particularly from the family of conductive polyaniline, by reacting a base-type non-conductive polymer containing carbon-nitrogen linkages, e.g., polyaniline, with an anhydride, such as R--SO.sub.2 --O--SO.sub.2 --R', R--CO--O--CO--R', or R--CO--O--SO.sub.2 R', or mixtures thereof, where R and R' are alkyl or aryl, e.g., tosylic anhydride or benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride, and forming an electrically conductive polymer in which the SO.sub.2 R and COR groups are covalently linked to the nitrogen atoms of the conductive polymer and the anion of the conductive polymer is the SO.sub.3 R' or O.sub.2 CR' group.
Abstract: Optical glass fiber having its glass surface adherently coated with an ultraviolet-cured coating of a liquid ultraviolet-curable coating composition is disclosed in which the composition comprises an ultraviolet-curable polymeric polyacrylate, a photoinitiator to render the composition curable with ultraviolet light, and from about 0.5% to about 5% of the coating composition of a polyalkoxy silane containing an organic substituent carrying a single mercaptyl hydrogen atom capable of reacting with acrylate unsaturation by Michael adduction. These compositions provide improved adhesion to the glass surface of the optical fiber which is well retained after exposure to high humidity atmospheres.

Abstract: Petroleum Resins particularly effective for use as tackifiers for hot melt adhesives and in tackifiers for solvent-based pressure sensitive adhesives are prepared by a processWherein (1) a C.sub.8 - and/or C.sub.9 aromatic unsaturated hydrocarbon-containing feed (optionally containing up to 18 wt. % or C.sub.4 or C.sub.5 unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons) is first polymerized completely and thereafter a C.sub.5 -aliphatic unsaturated hydrocarbon-containing feed is added, polymerization continued and the reactor effluent stripped to obtain the resin. Abstract: There is disclosed copolymers of aromatic vinyl compounds, e.g., styrene, and conjugated diolefins, e.g., butadiene, possessing a differential content of the aromatic vinyl compound such that in at least one of the end portions of the copolymer the differential content shows a sharp and substantial increase in the direction of the outer extremity of the end portion. Preferred copolymers are styrene-butadiene copolymers having a vinyl content of at least 30%. In special embodiments, the copolymers have a styrene content changing in a portion of no more than 5% of the copolymer chain from a first value to a second value, the second value being at least 25 percentage points greater than the first value, and the portion is present within a 10% terminal portion of the copolymer. The copolymers are useful in the tread portions of tires as tires containing such copolymers in the tread composition have improved rolling resistance and/or grip on wet road surfaces.

Abstract: This invention is a rubber composition for a tire tread of 100 parts by weight (pbw) diene system rubber to which are added x pbw of carbon black and y pbw of softening agent. The softening agent contains z pbw of liquid polymer. The amounts of x, y and z are described by the inequalities (5/8)x-20.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.x and (y/5)+5.ltoreq.z. The liquid polymer has a flow points of 20.degree. C. or below. The rubber composition provided here gives a tire tread with improved performance in terms of grade climbing ability, braking and standing start, on ice as well as on snow. Besides, the service life of the rubber is prolonged, and tread performance deterioration is reduced to a minimum.
