  • Patent number: 4531976
Abstract: A heterologous ink composition for use in an ink jet apparatus features two miscibly incompatible components made compatible by the use of a common solvent having miscibility for both aqueously and non-aqueously miscible components. The heterologous ink composition derives its print quality characteristic from the non-aqueously miscible component and its good jetability and small dot size from its aqueously miscible component.

  • Patent number: 4528036
Abstract: Process for preparing printing ink binders based on reaction products of (a) natural resins, a copolymer (b+c) of (b) polymerizable hydrocarbons having isolated C.sub.5 rings and (c) .alpha.,.beta.-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid units and (d) calcium compounds and, if appropriate, other compounds of metals of group II of the periodic system. The compounds (a) to (c) are reacted to give a product having an acid number of 75 to 150, which is then reacted with metal compounds in such a way that the acid number is reduced by at least one third. Unreacted metal compounds present in the resulting reaction product are then converted by means of acetic acid, via acetates, into salts of the resins. The resulting binders are used for preparing printing inks.

  • Patent number: 4525518
Abstract: Novel pigments useful as primary extenders in exterior grade latex formulations are described. The pigments are composed of particles of calcined clay, substantially all the particles of which are finer than about 44 microns and having an average particle size, equivalent spherical diameter, within the range of about 3 to 10 microns, most preferably within the range of about 4 to 8 microns. The novel pigments are further characterized by having a significantly lower oil absorption value (ASTM) than conventional, calcined clay pigments. Exterior grade paint formulations containing such pigments can be formulated below the critical pigment volume concentration without substantially reducing opacity or chalking resistance.

  • Patent number: 4519841
Abstract: A non-petroleum base newspaper offset printing ink comprising a blend of Gilsonite (uintaite) flakes and tall oil fatty acid together with carbon black pigment. The proportions of the Gilsonite and the tall oil fatty acid may be varied, as viscosity requirements change due to differences in press speeds, newsprint characteristics, and the like. The ink thus has readily adjustable viscosity, together with an enhanced flow and penetration characteristics, while being extremely economical to manufacture.
