  • Patent number: 5109965
Abstract: The present invention provides an improvement in the structure of a temperature sensitive hydraulic fan coupling for supplying a suitable amount of cooling air to the automobile engine according to the travelling conditions of the automobile. The conventional fan coupling of the above type has had the disadvantages that since the rotation of the fan is controlled by a torque transmission mechanism depending only on the variation of ambient temperature, no supply of a suitable amount of cooling air to the engine is made especially at the time of acceleration of the engine so that the reduction of the amount of horsepower consumption and fan noise level cannot be realized satisfactorily. To eliminate the above disadvantage, the present invention uses both a temperature responsive valve member and a centrifugal valve for automatically controlling the flow of oil within the coupling thereby reducing the amount of horsepower consumption and fan noise level.

  • Patent number: 5105922
Abstract: A hydraulic actuating system for disengaging a clutch, shifting gears in a transmission and reengaging the clutch for a vehicle. An electric pump delivers hydraulic fluid under pressure to an accumulator. High and low pressure switches control operation of the pump to maintain the hydraulic fluid pressure within a desired range, while limiting operating time of the pump and minimizing energy waste. The pressurized fluid from the accumulator is applied through valves to operate a clutch actuating mechanism and to shift transmission gears. A secondary accumulator is provided at the clutch actuating mechanism to provide smoother clutch reengagement with a low cost valve having a relative coarse modulation capacity.

  • Patent number: 5101947
Abstract: A device for driving a screwdriver spindle has a claw clutch and an over-detent clutch. The two clutches are arranged coaxially to each other and have coupling parts which are displaceable in an axial direction. Upon a first response of the over-detent clutch, the claw clutch is disengaged, a correspondingly axially displaceable coupling part of the claw clutch is then locked in a disengaged position by a disengageable safety which is simply a radially elastically expandable clamping sleeve which is connected to the claw-clutch and has a detent projection which protrudes radially inward. The screwdriver spindle on which the clamping sleeve is arranged has two circumferential grooves for engagement of the detent projection, the axial center-to-center distance of which is greater than the coupling stroke of the claw clutch.

  • Patent number: 5099969
Abstract: A vehicle transmission control arrangement in which an automatic clutch is disengaged in response to a signal received from a shift lever switch provided to detect an operation of a shift lever for shifting a speed changing mechanism. A comparator is provided to determine whether a detected or determined output torque of an engine is smaller than a predetermined reference value below which an increase in the engine speed upon full disengagement of the clutch will not significantly deteriorate a driving comfort of the vehicle. A clutch control device is adapted to inhibit the clutch from being fully disengaged despite the presence of the signal from the shift lever switch, if the engine output torque is not smaller than the reference value.

  • Patent number: 5097932
Abstract: A clutch driven disc assembly includes a ventilated support plate and friction element to reduce the build up of heat during use. The support plate includes a plurality of radially extending paddles. A pair of friction elements are secured to the opposed sides of each of the paddles. Each paddle has a plurality of generally parallel slots formed therethrough. The slots may extend generally radially or generally circumferentially relative to the paddle. Each of the friction elements includes a corrugated backing plate having a friction facing secured thereto. The corrugations define a plurality of raised channels in the backing plate. The raised channels are formed such that they are aligned with the slots formed through the support plate when the friction elements are secured to the paddle. Such alignment provides a plurality of channels for the passage of air therethrough as the driven disc assembly rotates during use.

  • Patent number: 5096035
Abstract: An alternator drive clutch limits alternator speed and prevents belt slippage through the use of specially designed and oriented centrifugal weights. Each weight is pivoted to the alternator shaft inside of a drum wall on the pulley and asymmetrically oriented so that rapid rotation pivots a friction pad on the weight progressively away from the drum wall. Acting in opposition, tension springs pull the pads toward the drum wall. An equilibrium of pad to drum wall slippage is reached such that the alternator does not rotate above a safe speed, but turns one-to-one with the pulley at low speeds. At any speed, high acceleration or deceleration can cause the pads to slip before the belt slips on the pulley, preventing belt chirp.

  • Patent number: 5092437
Abstract: A locking apparatus which includes a locking element, an unlocking element, and a latching member. In the rest position, two arms of the latching member are maintained in their latched positions by compressed springs. To unlock, the unlocking element is turned in one or the other direction of rotation, whereby one of two inclined surfaces lifts one arm against the restoring force of a spring via a bearing surface of the unlocking element. Upon further turning of the unlocking element, an entraining projection from this element pulls the locking element along with it in the same direction of rotation. If the unlocking element is turned in the opposite direction, the arms automatically return to a rest position.

  • Patent number: 5090531
Abstract: An electrophoretic fluid torque transmission apparatus in which cooperable electrodes are connected respectively to drive and driven elements. An electrophoretic fluid capable of separating into particle-rich and particle-deficient phases by electrophoresis operates in surface contact with the electrodes. An electrically non-conductive material having raised surface areas and spaces between the surface areas is associated with one or more of the electrodes. When a voltage is applied between the electrodes in a first direction, the particle-rich phase of the fluid collects on one of the electrodes and also makes contact with the spaces and the raised surface areas of the material associated with the other electrode thereby engaging or locking the electrodes together and transmitting force between the elements.
