  • Patent number: 5214979
Abstract: A remote control mechanism comprises a foot pedal 2 which is pivotable about an axis 3 to effect rotation of a quadrant gear 17 about the same axis. A pinion 19 meshes with the quadrant gear and is rotatably fast with a snail cam 20 which pivots about the pinion axis. The snail cam 20 has a continuously variable velocity ratio and has attached to it the core 4 of a cable 5 so that the core is translated within the cable casing 6 when the snail cam 20 is pivoted about the pinion axis in response to an operative pivotal movement of the foot pedal 2. Successive regions of the cam periphery 33 of the snail cam engage and pick up the cable core 4 as the snail cam is pivoted, the radius of pick-up decreasing as the snail cam is pivoted by the operative movement of the foot pedal 2.

  • Patent number: 5215175
Abstract: A clutch drive mechanism for the cooling fan of an automotive engine includes a driving member rotated by the vehicle engine and a driven member carrying fan blades. The driving member includes an axially movable portion which is rotated through drive pins slidably received in bores in the axially movable portion. Resilient grommets are carried in the walls of the bores and engage the pin to prevent noise and rattling as the clutch members are engaged and disengaged. Grooves are provided on the pins which receive the grommets when the axially movable portion is in the fully disengaged position, which allows the axially movable portion to move to a truly centered position with respect to the spindle, thereby eliminating stress on the components when the mechanism is in the released condition.

  • Patent number: 5211274
Abstract: An overriding clutch adapted for use within both metallic and synthetic resin structures has a housing of generally annular cross section with at least three equidistantly spaced recesses about its inner periphery each having a radial throat portion and a secantally extending portion elongated in the direction opposite the normal direction of rotation of the shaft. The radially outer surface of the secantal portion has a secantally extending rectilinear ramp portion which is inclined to a smaller radial dimension. A roller bearing in the recess has a diameter slightly larger than the throat, and the radial depth of the recess to the ramp surface is less than the diameter of the roller bearing so that the outer circumference of the roller bearing extends radially inwardly of the housing to provide a bearing surface for the shaft. A spring in the elongated portion of the recess biases the roller along the ramp surface.

  • Patent number: 5207116
Abstract: A core length adjuster mechanism provides adjustment for a push-pull cable system having a core disposed within a conduit. The core and the conduit are flexible for much of their length, with the core being a rigid rod at the ends. An end of one of the rods is slidably disposed within a body of the adjuster mechanism. The body has generally rectangular shape, elongated in an axial direction. The body has a means of swivelable attachment integrated into it. The body has a rectangular opening through perpendicular to the axis from a top to a bottom. There are teeth transverse to the axis in the opening on sides paralleling the axis. A clip is disposed in the opening. The clip can be manually moved from an adjust position to an engaged position It has teeth complementary to the teeth in the opening that engage those teeth when the clip is in an engaged position by pressing it into the body. When the clip is in the adjust position, the teeth are not engaged.

  • Patent number: 5207120
Abstract: A tubular shaft has a portion of reduced inner diameter at a location where joining to an apertured member is desired. The aperture in the member is lobed with splines in the lobes and has an undercut groove, or groove and is hardened. The shaft is inserted in the aperture and the reduced inner diameter portion is expanded to force the shaft material into the lobes and groove and around the splines to form a connection which resists torque and axial separation. The tube expansion is effected by forcing a series of balls through the reduced diameter portion, each ball being slightly larger than the reduced diameter and larger than the previous ball but smaller than the remainder of the shaft I.D. A crankshaft is assembled with this method wherein counterweights have lobed apertures to receive end portions of crank pins and main journals having reduced I.D.'s.

  • Patent number: 5203835
Abstract: A lock-up torque converter for an automatic transmission includes a pump fixedly connected to a crankshaft of the internal combustion engine and a converter cover connected to a converter output shaft during a lock-up condition. A shock absorbing member connects the pump and the converter cover to be elastic in the rotating direction of the converter output shaft. Accordingly, both fluctuations of the engine speed and of the output shaft speed are absorbed by the pump and the converter cover, respectively and therefore the torsional vibrations and the noises generated in the passenger compartment are largely suppressed.

  • Patent number: 5193413
Abstract: The invention relates to connecting rods for piston engines, made of sintered metal, the connecting-rod shank consisting of two individual booms separated from one another. The object is to connect the individiual booms to the connecting-rod eyes in such a way that the danger of buckling is effectively minimized. The object is achieved in that the arrangement of the connection of the individual booms to the connecting-rod eyes takes place at such an angle and these connections are made so smoothly by means of transitional radii that the force flux between the connecting-rod eyes and the individual booms has an optimum course.
