  • Patent number: 5293977
Abstract: Apparatus for transmitting torque from the output shaft of the engine to the input shaft of the variable-speed transmission in a motor vehicle has a primary flywheel which is connectable to the output shaft, a secondary flywheel which is connectable to the input shaft by engaging a friction clutch, and one or more dampers which oppose rotation of the flywheels relative to each other. The flywheels define an annular chamber for the damper or dampers, and such chamber surrounds two closely adjacent portions of the flywheels which define a radially extending clearance for the flow of cooling air. The radially inner portion of the chamber is separated from the clearance by an annular seal which is located at most midway between the radially innermost and radially outermost portions of an annular friction surface on the secondary flywheel. Such friction surface is adjacent one friction lining of a clutch plate forming part of the friction clutch and being connectable to the input shaft of the transmission.

  • Patent number: 5289908
Abstract: A cutting or bending machine has a combined clutch and brake mechanism cooled by air flow from an electrically powered impeller. A guide duct directs the air flow substantially uniformly through the entire volume of the combined clutch and brake mechanism, preferably to the outer peripheral edges of the mechanism, so that generated heat is dissipated continuously and the machine can be operated more productively. The impeller fan and the guide duct may direct the air flow either axially or radially of the mechanism and the air flow may be either inwardly or outwardly of the mechanism.

  • Patent number: 5279402
Abstract: The invention relates to a freewheeling device 11 in the case of which the outer freewheeling component 14 and the inner freewheeling component 17 are connected in the main torque transmitting direction by locking members 25 which engage apertures 24 of the inner freewheeling component 17 and recesses 26 of the outer freewheeling component 14 and which permit one of the freewheeling components 14 to be overtaken by the other freewheeling component 17 when a certain speed is exceeded. If the speed is below the specified speed, an additional switching element is released via a speed-dependent switching device 29, so that the switching element 30, under the influence of a spring 36, is transferred into a position where it supports the locking member 25 to prevent them from escaping radially inwardly, thereby cancelling the freewheeling function.

  • Patent number: 5277288
Abstract: A clutch for a tire lift/carrier winch includes a drive plate and a driven plate having a plurality of elongate springs thereon. The driven plate includes circumferentially spaced driven end portions which are positioned in driving engagement with circumferentially spaced drive portions of the drive plate to permit rotation of the driven plate upon rotation of the drive plate when the load on the cable winding spool is within a prescribed limit. However, when the load on the cable winding spool exceeds the prescribed limit, the elongate springs on the driven plate function as cantilevered spring segments deflectable about respective fulcrums in such a manner as to prevent rotation of the driven plate upon rotation of the drive plate.

  • Patent number: 5277289
Abstract: The invention is directed to a fluid friction coupling which includes a drive shaft made of steel and a drive disc made of an aluminum alloy. A coupling housing defines a work space in which the drive disc is disposed. The drive disc includes a hub defining an internal thread and the drive shaft has an end lug defining an outer thread. The drive shaft and hub are threadably engaged and tightened with respect to each other so as to cause the threads to conjointly define a thread joint which is plastically deformed to provide a permanent joint between the drive disc and the drive shaft.

  • Patent number: 5273147
Abstract: The invention relates to a locking device 4 for a freewheeling unit 1 of a non-directly driven axle of a motor vehicle driven by a directly driven axle. To lock the freewheeling unit 1 there is provided a first drive element 2 with a number of circumferentially distributed apertures 15 holding radially displaceable locking elements 16. • Patent number: 5271487
Abstract: A driven disk assembly includes a hub assembly and a support plate assembly to which friction pads are attached. If the driven disk assembly includes a free travel feature wherein the hub assembly is free to rotate slightly with respect to the support plate assembly, it is difficult to align splines of the hub assembly with cooperating splines of a transmission input shaft upon installing a clutch including the driven disk assembly within a drive train. In order to negate free travel prior to installation, a small quantity of rupturable material is disposed within a slot that accommodates lost notion between the support plate assembly and hub assembly. Upon initially rotating the support plate assembly, the material ruptures, allowing relative motion between the support plate assembly and hub assembly so that the free travel feature and damping springs disposed between the assemblies function as intended.

  • Patent number: 5269399
Abstract: A driving force transmission device for a vehicle has a homokinetic joint having an outer ring and a clutch device having an outer ring coupled to the outer ring of the homokinetic joint. An input shaft is rotatably inserted in the outer rings. A cage is rotatably mounted between opposed surfaces of the outer rings and the input shaft. The cage has pockets. Engaging elements are mounted in the pockets. They are adapted to engage the opposed surfaces when the input shaft and the cage rotate relative to each other either clockwise or counterclockwise. Elastic members are mounted in the pockets to keep the engaging elements in a not-engaged position. The cage and the input shaft are coupled together with a gap extending in the direction of rotation formed therebetween so as to be rotatable together. A differential member are mounted on the cage or the input shaft to produce a difference in rotation therebetween.

  • Patent number: 5265707
Abstract: A friction type one-way clutch includes friction elements held by a retainer between an input side member and an output side member. The friction elements are released from frictional engagement with the input side and output side members to interrupt power transmission from the input side member to the output side member by rotating the retainer. For rotating the retainer, a rotor is formed on the retainer, and a stator having coils for generating a rotational magnetic field is disposed around the rotor. An electric current is fed to the coils of the stator to generate a rotational magnetic field, and the rotation of the rotor by this rotational magnetic field rotates the retainer.
