Abstract: New Mannich bases and their alkaline earth metal salts are prepared by condensing formaldehyde and a polyamine with a sulfur-containing phenolic mixture consisting of (1) from 5 to 40% of a sulfurized alkylphenol; and (2) from 95 to 60% of phenol alkylated with polyisobutene of 16 to 128 carbon atoms or a mixture of said phenol alkylated with polyisobutene and phenol alkylated with a propylene tetramer. They are useful as additives for lubricating oils, particularly for use in marine cylinder lubricating oils.
Abstract: The invention relates to lubricants for use in metal shaping operations, especially hot and cold rolling of steel and aluminium, and casting of aluminium. Preferred lubricants comprise in a mixture (i) a tetraester of pentaerythritol and a C.sub.16 to C.sub.20 aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, (ii) orthophosphoric acid. The lubricants have markedly reduced coefficients of friction; improved roll-wear characteristics and good stability at temperatures of 250+.degree.C. Incorporation of mineral oil and an emulsifier enables the thus modified composition to be used for the preparation of aqueous emulsions or dispersions.
Abstract: A lubricating oil additive composition which imparts improved oxidation properties to crankcase lubricants comprises an antioxidant selected from aromatic or alkyl sulfides and polysulfides, sulfurized olefins, sulfurized carboxylic acid esters and sulfurized ester-olefins, and a tertiary amine of the formula (R).sub.3 N wherein each R is independently C.sub.1 -C.sub.35 alkyl and at least one R contains at least 11 carbon atoms. Lubricating oil compositions containing this additive composition are also disclosed.

The new compounds also have bactericidal and fungicidal properties.
Abstract: Condensation products made by reacting an alphahaloalkyl hydroxy-aromatic compound also having at least one non-fused hydrocarbyl substituent with at least one olefinic nitrile, carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid derivative are useful as additives for fuels and lubricants.
