Abstract: The invention is a hybrid chuck for securing workpieces with an electrostatic charge. The hybrid chuck includes a dielectric base for supporting the hybrid chuck. The dielectric base has a top surface and a conductive layer covers at least a portion of the top surface of the dielectric base. The conductive layer is conductive for receiving a current that creates an electrostatic charge and is non-metallic for maintaining the electrostatic charge without significant eddy current losses in the presence of dynamic electromagnetic fields. The top working surface covers the conductive layer and is flat for holding workpieces upon the receiving of the current to create the electrostatic charge in the conductive layer.

  • Patent number: 6747863
Abstract: An electrostatic drive having a plurality of mover electrodes operatively secured to a mover, and a plurality of stator electrodes operatively secured to a stator. The mover and stator are configured to move relative to each other via electrostatic force generated between the mover electrodes and the stator electrodes. The electrostatic drive includes a driver configured to place the stator electrodes in any of a number of sequential voltage states, each being defined by a combination of LO and HI voltage levels at the individual stator electrodes. Transition from one voltage state to a sequentially adjacent voltage state produces a step size of relative movement between the mover and stator. For each of the sequential voltage states, the driver is further configured to selectively vary voltage applied at one of the stator electrodes to an amount between the LO and the HI voltage levels, in order to produce a proportionally smaller step size.

  • Patent number: 6744612
Abstract: The invention relates to an inrush current protection circuit for a power supply. The power supply includes a rectification circuit coupled to a main body of the power supply through an energy-storage capacitor. The main body of the power supply is provided with a reference voltage, and the setup time of the reference voltage is greater than a threshold value. The inrush current protection circuit includes a current limiting resistor coupled between a negative terminal of the rectification circuit and a ground terminal of the energy-storage capacitor for preventing the generation of an inrush current the instant that the power supply is powered on, and a switch coupled in parallel with the current limiting resistor and which is controlled by the reference voltage. When the reference voltage is set up, the switch switches from an open state to a short state, so as to bypass the current limiting resistor.

  • Patent number: 6743038
Abstract: A zero insertion force connector basing on surface contact having a connector base with multiple connecting terminals installed thereon in array form, a sliding cover, and a clamping lever for securing the sliding cover in position. Each connecting terminal is appropriately bent at the lower end to form a contact surface, so that when the connector is placed on a substrate, each connecting terminal is matched by a corresponding solder pad leading to the internal circuit inside the substrate. With only a small amount of applied force to join the connecting terminals onto the substrate by soldering, the connector can thus be mounted onto the substrate with reliability.

  • Patent number: 6744619
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a conductive electrolyte for use in high voltage electrolytic capacitors and to an electrolytic capacitor impregnated with the electrolyte of the present invention for use in an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). The electrolyte according to the present invention is composed of a two solvent mixture of ethylene glycol and a polar organic cosolvent. Dissolved in this mixture is a combination of: a high dielectric cosolvent, a long chain monocarboxylic acid and an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid of carbon chain length from eight to thirteen (C8 to C13). The solution is then neutralized with an amine. A cathode depolarizer, or degassing agent may be added to reduce the amount of gas produced during capacitor life. Hypophosphorous acid may be added to enhance the life characteristics of the electrolyte. The water content may be adjusted with deionized water to achieve a Karl Fischer titration (water content) measurement of about 1.0% to about 8.

  • Patent number: 6741451
Abstract: A solid electrolytic capacitor includes a capacitor element and a resin package enclosing the capacitor element. Two anode leads, partially enclosed by the package, are connected to the opposite ends of the anode bar that are allowed to protrude in the opposite directions from an anode chip of the capacitor element. The capacitor element is provided with a cathode layer connected to an external cathode electrode arranged between the paired anode leads. With this symmetrical structure of two anode leads and one cathode electrode, the solid electrolytic capacitor can be mounted onto a printed circuit board without worrying about the polarity of the capacitor. Further, the proximity of the cathode electrode and the respective anode leads serves to reduce the self-induction in a high-frequency range.

  • Patent number: 6741449
Abstract: A tunable element in the microwave frequency range is described that may include one or more tunable elements that are directly digitally controlled by a digital bus connecting a digital control circuit to each controlled element. In particular, each digital signal is filtered by a digital isolation technique so that the signal reaches the tunable elements with very low noise. The low noise digital signals are then converted to analog control voltages. The direct D/A conversion is accomplished by a special D/A converter which is manufactured as an integral part of a substrate. This D/A converter in accordance with the invention may consist of a resistor ladder or a directly digitally controlled capacitor. The direct digitally controlled capacitor may be a cantilevered type capacitor having multiple separate electrodes or sub-plates representing binary bits that may be used to control the capacitor.
