  • Patent number: 4534553
Abstract: The pedalling action drives a drive axle which is positioned below the back support. A wheel is eccentrically positioned on the drive axle and acts as a cam to drive the back support in its repeated pivoting motion. Roller bearings are positioned on the underneath side of the back support and engage the eccentric wheel (cam), thereby reducing friction between the rotating wheel and the pivoting back support during the sit up cycle.

  • Patent number: 4529195
Abstract: An exercising device for swinging a pair of synchronized jump ropes, comprises a first and second station, each having two rotatable shafts and a lever arm on each shaft extending radially from the shaft, each lever arm having radially spaced holes for attaching a jump rope. The first station is driven by a motor and the second station is freewheeling, being driven only by the first station, through the ropes, with both the driving and freewheeling stations being geared to internally synchronize the two ropes. The motor is electric and as a safety device a spring loaded movable element on a shaft at the driving station axially moves against the spring loading if a jumper interrupts the turning of the rope associated therewith, to interrupt the turning power, where the movable element in one version throws a cutoff switch to the motor and in another version is one plate of a two plate clutch. The clutch slips on interruption and resumes synchronous engagement thereafter.

  • Patent number: 4528998
Abstract: A spring loaded button, positioned interiorly of an inner tube, protrudes through a hole in the inner tube into latched relation with a preselected one of a series of longitudinally spaced holes in a telescoped outer tube. The button is manually depressed inwardly of the outer tube when the relative position of the inner and outer tubes is to be changed, the button thereafter being released to spring out through another hole in the outer tube to hold the tubes in a different relative position. A catch lip is mounted on the outer end of the button. The catch lip is sized to engage the edge of the outer tube's hole in the event of a slight longitudinal and/or oscillatory movement between tubes to tend to impede or hinder premature and undesired unlatching during normal use of the tubes. But the catch lip is not sized to prevent manual unlatching movement of the button against the spring bias when a position change between tubes is desired.

  • Patent number: 4520835
Abstract: A protective tent structure of light weight, portable construction is formed by joining a plurality of flexible support members at upper and lower terminal ends of each for pivotal movement about a linear axis through the commonly joined upper and lower ends. The tent is movable between fully erected and folded positions and, when in its folded position, the support members may be manually moved from a normal, unflexed position to a flexed position wherein the terminal ends of the support members are spaced more closely than when the members are in their unflexed positions. A separate member with hook-shaped end portions is provided for releasably retaining the support members in the flexed position while the tent is folded. In the unflexed position, the support members all include a linear base portion and an arcuate support portion, the latter being engaged with a flexible fabric covering which forms the protective portion of the tent when in the erected position.

  • Patent number: 4519603
Abstract: Apparatus that offers its users high intensity exercise through a leg operated, rotary motion mode of exercise in which the rotary motion is selectively interrupted so as to allow a beneficial, stand-up, body lifting, method of exercise. The body-lift rotary-motion apparatus includes pedals and cranks in a fixed 180.degree. relationship, a braking mechanism, and controls for operating the braking mechanism to provide that once the "down" pedal has moved past bottom dead center on its way up, it is momentarily braked to provide a step-up platform to permit the user to raise his body as he steps up onto the "up" pedal. In one embodiment, there is a frame to support the user while pedalling in a stand-up position and to hold the pedalling, braking, and control components, with braking accomplished by solenoid applied friction modulated by timers and voltage level controls available to the user to adjust exercise intensity and comfort, these controls being keyed to rotary pedal position by a cam-actuated switch.

  • Patent number: 4519602
Abstract: An amusement device comprises a rotatable tub in combination with a cooperative rotary carrousel which is occupant propelled. More particularly, the device comprises a pair of conventional automobile rear end differentials anchored in the ground and spaced apart, operatively connected by a drive shaft and transmission. One differential is anchored angularly and has a housing and axle extending upwardly therefrom to accept and support an inclined carrousel. The other differential has a housing and axle extending vertically therefrom to support a hollow tub mounted atop a platform. Individuals seated at opposite ends of the carrousel cause the axle to rotate by shifting their weight. Rotation of the angular axle is transmitted through one differential, the transmission, a universal joint, the drive shaft, and to the other differential which causes the vertical axle and tub to rotate.

  • Patent number: 4518002
Abstract: A locking assembly is disclosed which is suitable for releasably locking two articulated pivoting members in a fixed position with respect to each other. The locking assembly comprises a spring biased reciprocating latch, a plunger attached to the latch, and a catch plate adapted to rotate into locking engagement therewith. The plunger and latch are preferably integral with each other, so that the latch contains a minimum number of moving parts. The latch is designed so that simple palm pressure will cause it to disengage from the catch plate, to permit the pivoting members to move with respect to each other. The present locking assembly is of simple design and inexpensive manufacture, and is durable in use. The locking assembly is particularly applicable for use in invalid appliances such as collapsible walkers, where the users have limited manual dexterity.

  • Patent number: 4515360
Abstract: A sandbox for recreational play is disclosed which has a slidable cover. The cover slides between a closed position covering a container for holding sand to an open position wherein the sand container is uncovered. The cover has a downwardly depending end portion which supports the cover when in the open position, enabling the cover to be used as a play deck. The cover advantageously has an entertaining play surface formed thereon, preferably a miniature marina. To this end, a depression is formed in the cover into which water is received for use with water play toys. A toy vehicle roadway is also formed along the upper portion of the sandbox, and on the cover. The roadway is endless regardless of whether the cover is in either the fully open or fully closed cover position. The container has a channel formed in three of its sidewalls. The ends of the channel are open to the exterior of the container. The cover slides between positions guided by the channel.
