    Abstract: Improved video coding techniques include deriving prediction pixel blocks for use in intra-coding video and combined inter- and intra-coding video. In a first aspect, the techniques may include deriving value(s) for pixel location(s) of the prediction pixel block by, when a prediction direction vector assigned to the prediction vector points to quadrants I or III of a Cartesian plane, deriving the pixel location's value from pixel values in two regions of previously-decoded pixel data intercepted by extending the prediction direction vector in two opposite directions through the pixel location. When the prediction direction vector points toward quadrants II of the Cartesian plane, deriving the pixel location's value from pixel values in one region intercepted by the prediction direction vector through the pixel location, and from a second region intercepted by a vector that is orthogonal to the prediction direction vector.

    Abstract: For a picture with two or more color components, the prediction residuals for the first color component of a block to be encoded may be transformed with a first transform. The transform coefficients for the first color component may go through quantization, de-quantization and inverse transform to obtain reconstructed prediction residuals. Based on the reconstructed prediction residuals for the first color component, the phases of the transform basis function of the first transform can be adjusted to improve the sparsity of the transformed signal. The prediction residuals for the remaining color components may then be transformed with the adjusted transform. In order to determine the phase shift factor, the reconstructed prediction residuals for the first color component may be transformed with the first transform, adjusted by different candidate phase shift factors, and the candidate phase shift factor that provides a smallest sparsity measure can be selected for the block.

Further, the processing circuitry determines a block vector that points to a reference block in a same picture as the current block and checks that two corner samples of the reference block of the reference block have been reconstructed. In addition, the processing circuitry checks that an additional sample of the reference block has been reconstructed. Then, the processing circuitry reconstructs at least a sample of the current block based on reconstructed samples of the reference block that are retrieved from the reference sample memory.

A polarization characteristic acquisition unit acquires a polarization characteristic of the subject from a desired viewpoint position by using the polarized images aligned by the alignment unit to obtain the high-precision polarization characteristic with little degradation in temporal resolution and spatial resolution. It becomes possible to acquire the polarization characteristic of the subject at the desired viewpoint position.
