  • Patent number: 9491310
Abstract: Techniques are described for traffic volume determination and reporting by an access node and/or a node of a core network in a wireless communications system. One or more wireless connections may be established with a user equipment (UE) to serve one or more streams of traffic using a first cell and a second cell, which may have different cell characteristics. A first traffic volume for the UE may be determined based on traffic volume served over the first cell, and a second traffic volume for the UE may be determined based on traffic volume served over the second cell. A charging data record may be generated based on the first traffic volume and the second traffic volume. Traffic volume served over the first cell then may be charged at a different rate that traffic served over the second cell.

  • Patent number: 9476965
Abstract: Embodiments allow a station to determine its location and report the location to a access point or other network entity. The station obtains agreement with an access point, group of access points, or other network entity to provide its location to a designated accuracy level and the access point(s) agree to provide services such as access to a location service, the access point(s) location to a designated positional accuracy, etc. The station measures its position and induces an error in its reported location. The induced error prevents an exact location of the station from being determined by the access point(s) or others, thus preserving the privacy of the station. The location reported by the station may be absolute (e.g., geographic coordinates) or relative to a landmark, location, etc.

  • Patent number: 9456306
Abstract: A wireless communication device (WDEV) receives, detects, snoops, etc. (generally, “receives”) signals that are transmitted between two other WDEVs and extracts information therefrom to determine the location of the WDEV. These signals can include fine timing measurement (FTM) and/or timestamps related information as part of a frame exchange procedure between those two other WDEVs. A new protocol specifies when such an FTM and/or timestamps frame exchange procedure is performed between the two other WDEVs, and the WDEV intelligently detects/receives such signals at such specified times. When the WDEV operates in a reduced power or sleep state, the WDEV awakens from the reduced power or sleep state at the appropriate times to detect FTM and/or timestamps related information of such a frame exchange procedure. The WDEV then can process such FTM and/or timestamps related information for use in determining the location of the WDEV relative to the two other WDEVs.

  • Patent number: 9456325
Abstract: The invention relates to the management of the wait for a notification of an acknowledgment of receipt M_AR, used by a first terminal T1 that has sent a multimedia message MM to a second terminal T2. Said management involves a method in which the terminal T1 measures a period of waiting for the notification of acknowledgment of receipt M_AR of the multimedia message MM sent to the terminal T2. If the waiting period exceeds a predetermined threshold, the terminal T generates a text message M_SMS for notifying the availability of the multimedia message MM, to be sent the terminal T2. The method provides the deletion of text messages M_SMS received by the terminal T2, when they are duplicates of the multimedia messages MM. The invention further claims a computer system and program for implementing the method. Said management is particularly useful in instant messaging.

  • Patent number: 9432961
Abstract: A digitally stored map can indicate the signal quality for each of the map's regions. A device can determine its location, speed, and direction using global positioning system (GPS) and other sensors. Based on this information, the mobile device can predict a field of locations within which the device will probably be located within a specified future time frame. Based on both the information indicating signal quality and the probable future field of locations, the device can estimate a moment at which the device will probably begin to suffer from low-quality or absent signal. Using this prediction, the device can proactively perform a variety of anticipatory remedial actions. For example, the device can begin allocating a greater portion of currently available wireless network communication bandwidth to the reception of data packets that represent content that is being streamed to the device, so that the device can proactively buffer those packets.

  • Patent number: 9432965
Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to various approaches to gathering information about access nodes serving in an area and using the information to generate a coverage map. The coverage map may be generated by detecting broadcasted signal strengths from a plurality of access nodes as detected by other access nodes. The broadcasted signal strengths can be used in combination with the location of the access nodes receiving the broadcasted signal to estimate a location of each of the plurality of access nodes. A coverage map may be generated based on the estimated locations of each of the plurality of access nodes using an effective coverage range for each access node based on the access node type. The coverage of each access node may be refined by analyzing signal data received by neighboring nodes. The coverage map may be used to identify unauthorized devices.
