    Abstract: A gas delivery system provides a first gas as a liquid under extreme pressure and as a gas under intermediate pressure. Another gas delivery system provides a second gas under moderate pressure. The second gas is selected to solidify at a temperature at or above the temperature of the liquified gas. A nozzle assembly connected to the gas delivery systems produces a stream containing a liquid component, a solid component, and a gas component. The liquid component of the stream consists of a high velocity jet of the liquified first gas. The high velocity jet is surrounded by a particle sheath that consists of solid particles of the second gas which solidifies in the nozzle upon contact with the liquified gas of the high velocity jet. The gas component of the stream is a high velocity flow of the first gas that encircles the particle sheath, forming an outer jacket.

    Abstract: An automatic bag folding apparatus is disclosed for folding vehicular air bags. The bag folding apparatus includes a base, a holding fixture, an end fold assembly, and a tuck assembly. The air bag folded by the apparatus may be coupled to a reaction plate with a center portion of the air bag overlying the reaction plate and parameters of the center portion defined by the reaction plate. The air bag further includes side folds and a first end adjacent the center portion. The holding fixture receives the reaction plate, thereby securing the center portion of the air bag. The end fold assembly is carried by the base, and has an end fold blade movable between a support position spaced from the holding fixture for supporting the first end of the air bag, and a fold position adjacent the holding fixture for folding the first end to form an end fold. The tuck assembly is carried by the base for forming an end tuck in the end fold.

    Abstract: An indexable cutting insert having a polygonal body including top and bottom surfaces connected by a peripheral wall having sides and corners. In a generally diamond shaped embodiment, opposite acutely angled corners and the adjacent sides form cutting edges at their junctures with the top surface, forming noses at the corners. A narrow cutting land extends inward from each cutting edge and slopes downward from the nose along both adjacent sides. A chip groove includes a pair of wedge faces, sloping downwardly from the cutting land to a flat floor and a radius blend juncture aligned with the nose and bisecting the adjacent sides. A pair of chipbreaker faces slope upward from the flat floor and backward from a ridge that connects the chipbreaker faces and is upwardly aligned with the juncture of the cutting faces. Various additional features are also disclosed.

    Abstract: An apparatus for infolding and sealing the side and end bottom flaps of a carton includes a unique bottom side flap infolding system comprising flap infolding arms mounted to rotary cylinders for automatically infolding and supporting the bottom side flaps. The rotary cylinders are actuated by a sensor which senses the presence or absence of a carton in the apparatus. The apparatus also includes a unique assembly comprising downwardly inwardly inclined rollers mounted to the conveyor side arm assemblies to urge the carton downward toward the lower sealing head to assure a complete and continuous bottom seal. The apparatus may also include transversely adjustable guardrails, a hold down flange to maintain the carton against the packing plate and a carton urging assembly for urging the carton through the apparatus.

    Abstract: A throw-away insert has four sets of cutting edges with high edge strength and which does not limit the amount which can be cut. An upper half portion of the insert has a set of cutting edges provided at each of two acute-angled corners of a parallelogram. The set of cutting edges includes a major cutting edge defined on one side of the parallelogram and a minor cutting edge defined on the other side and forming an angle of about 90.degree. with the major cutting edge. The lower half portion of the insert has the same structure and dimensions as the upper half portion but is configured as if the upper portion were turned over and further rotated 3.degree.-7.degree. clockwise with respect to the upper half portion. The two sets of cutting edges on the upper half portion and the two on the lower half portion constitute four sets of cutting edges in all.

    Abstract: A first end surface of a coiled compression spring at its relaxed length is machined to a plane transverse to the spring axis. The spring is then placed in a press structure having first and second opposed planar support surfaces, with the machined spring end surface bearing against the first support surface, the unmachined spring end surface bearing against a planar first surface of a lateral force compensation member, and an opposite, generally spherically curved surface of the compensation member bearing against the second press structure support surface. The spring is then compressed generally to its loaded length, and a circumferentially spaced series of marks, lying in a plane parallel to the second press structure support surface, are formed on the spring coil on which the second spring end surface lies. The spring is then removed from the press structure, and the second spring end surface is machined to the mark plane.

Each of the two side surfaces (6, 6') is inclined and forms an obtuse angle with the base surface (3). The two secondary cutting edges joining a common main cutting edge are located in a common plane that forms an obtuse angle with each imaginary plane being parallel with the base surface. The corner angle between a secondary cutting edge and the adjacent main cutting edge is equal at at least two diametrically opposite cutting corners (9).

    Abstract: A cutting tool has cutting teeth attached to a base surface of the cutting tool. Each tooth is provided with a generally vertical leading face that is arranged at an angle relative to a forward stroke direction of the cutting tool, and a corresponding, similarly shaped trailing face relative to said forward stroke direction. Extending between the leading face and the trailing face is at least one cutting surface perpendicular to the leading face. The cutting surface has an elongated, generally linear crest having a length that extends between the leading and trailing faces and is situated at a distance from the base surface. Each leading face forms a piercing corner with the crest. The teeth of the cutting tool are arranged in a plurality of rows, with each row being oriented generally perpendicularly to the forward stroke direction. Each leading face of each tooth of at least one row is oriented at an angle relative to the forward stroke direction.

    Abstract: A system of forming a coreless roll paper product in which an elongated coreless paper roll is cut into segments by a saw. Prior to being cut from the elongated coreless paper roll, each roll segment is positioned on a support shaft located on a rotatable turret. The roll segment is severed while being supported by both an elongated mandrel and the support shaft, the blade passing through a space between the mandrel and support shaft. The turret has a number of spaced support shafts projecting therefrom, and rotation of the turret simultaneously brings the support shafts to various locations so that various steps in the operation are performed seriatim and simultaneously.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed at a method and an apparatus for finishing an orifice surface of a work piece consisting of a hard material such as ceramics or glass. The method removes surface anomalies on the orifice surface with a broach to produce a finished orifice. The broach tapers from a broad end down to a narrow end. The cross-section at the broad end is sized to fit snugly in the finished orifice. The method involves inserting the narrow end of the broach through an orifice of the work piece, and passing the broach through the orifice. In this way, the broach files and thereby removes the surface anomalies to conform the orifice to the finished orifice.

    Abstract: A flat disk-like tool insert has a plurality of arcuate cutter tips for machining the side surface of a rotating work piece, and a plurality of linear cutting edges for machining a chamfer on the end of the work piece. An endless land surface is contiguous with the cutter tips and the linear cutting edges so as to deflect metal chips away from the machined surfaces. Each tool tip is aligned with two chip breaker ledges that are arranged in a step configuration, such that chips of varying thickness can be effectively and cleanly broken without interference with the machining process. A third chip breaker ledge is set back from each linear cutting edge for breaking chips generated during a chamfering operation.

Also disclosed is a polishing device. In one embodiment, the device comprises a magnetorheological fluid, a means for inducing a magnetic field, and a means for displacing the object to be polished or the means for inducing a magnetic field relative to one another.

    Abstract: A chamfering tool made up of a holder and a double headed blade. The holder is substantially cylindrical, with a bullet nose at one end and a turned down shank at the other end. An angularly offset bore for holding the blade penetrates the bullet nose at an angle to the holder longitudinal axis, and also penetrates the holder cylindrical wall. When the blade is installed in the bore, one or both heads externally expose their respective operating cutting edges. The blade is substantially cylindrical, with cutting edges at each end being perpendicular to and intersecting the longitudinal axis of the blade. The novel arrangement enables the chamfering tool to work in tight quarters, to be readily removed and easily sharpened, and enables both right and left handed cutting by a simple adjustment.

    Abstract: An automated method is disclosed for grinding and polishing the terminated ends of the optical fibers in a fiber optic cable. The abrasive material, in strip form, is moved in a carriage along a linear path while the carriage is oscillated in a circle within a plane during polishing. There are three separate work stations operating concurrently, the first having a relatively course grade of abrasive while the others have finer grades. Fixtures holding the cables for polishing are held in fixture supports that are automatically fed toward the abrasive material during polishing and retracted after polishing is complete. The fixture engagement mechanism for the first carriage engages at a slower rate than do the mechanisms of the other carriages.

    Abstract: An improved hopper and conveyance tube combination which is resistant to clogging and more easily loaded. Material is delivered from the hopper and into the conveyance tube through an inlet opening in the side of the conveyance tube. Because the inlet opening is in the side of the conveyance tube, the tube can not become completely clogged. Air or conveying fluid is always able to move through the conveyance tube and eventually conveys all of the materials to the desired destination. A ramp connected to the rim of the hopper permits materials on the floor to be easily swept up the ramp and into the hopper.
