  • Patent number: 7517490
Abstract: A ceramic green body is formed by gelcasting. The ceramic green body is heated in the mold so that a solvent contained in the ceramic green body is moved to form a solvent film between the outer surface of the ceramic green body and the inner surface of the mold. The solvent film facilitates release of the ceramic green body from the mold, thereby preventing the occurrence of damage to the ceramic green body as the ceramic green body is released from the mold.

  • Patent number: 7504057
Abstract: In a method of manufacturing an exhaust gas purifying filter that captures and purifies particulates involved in an exhaust gas emitted from an internal combustion engine, a honeycomb mold body of a desired length is firstly made by an extrusion molding step. In a sealing and enlarging step, tapered front parts of a multi-taper jig are inserted into the corresponding openings of the cells. The multi-taper jig is then oscillatory moved in a direction perpendicular to a longitudinal length of the ceramic mold body while heating the partition walls forming the cells, so that the opening of one cell is closed and sealed completely and the opening of the adjacent cell is enlarged in area. Finally, the honeycomb mold body is burned.

  • Patent number: 7503189
Abstract: A load cell is attached between a fixed axis and an upper die assembly and arranged in a forming chamber. For this reason, the load cell is hardly influenced by reduction of pressure in the forming chamber. A cooling plate is arranged between the load cell and the upper die assembly. An interior of the forming chamber is sectioned into two zones by the cooling plate, a flange and an isolating plate. The upper die assembly and a lower die assembly are housed in the lower zone surrounded by a transparent quartz tube. The load cell is housed in the upper zone surrounded by a cooling chamber. Thus, temperature rise of the load cell can be prevented.

  • Patent number: 7484511
Abstract: A cigarette comprises a tobacco rod and a multi-component filter comprising a bed of adsorbent and a flavor-releasing filter segment located downstream of the bed of adsorbent. In the preferred embodiment, the adsorbent is also flavor-bearing and comprises high surface area, activated carbon. As mainstream smoke is drawn through the upstream portion of the filter, gas phase smoke constituents are removed and flavor is released from the adsorbent bed. Thereafter additional flavor is released into the mainstream smoke as it passes through the flavor-releasing filter segment. Ventilation is provided to limit the amount of tobacco being combusted during each puff and is arranged at a location spaced downstream from the adsorbent bed to lower mainstream smoke velocity through the adsorbent bed.

  • Patent number: 7481963
Abstract: A method for reducing the loss of magnesium during the sintering of aluminum oxide articles, such as ceramic discharge vessels for lighting applications. Magnesium oxide is added to aluminum oxide articles to control grain growth during sintering, but the sintering causes magnesium loss from the article. In order to address this problem, one or more aluminum oxide articles that are enriched in magnesium oxide are added to the sintering furnace to stem the loss of magnesium oxide in the remaining articles. The enriched aluminum oxide article is made by soaking a porous aluminum oxide article in an aqueous solution of magnesium nitrate and heating the porous article to convert the magnesium nitrate to magnesium oxide. The enriched articles may then be added in one or several locations to the sintering furnace, where the magnesium from the enriched articles is released to suppress the magnesium loss.

  • Patent number: 7481962
Abstract: There are newly provided an index which quantitatively indicates shapes of kaolin particles, and a method of measuring the index. There is also provided a method of manufacturing a low-thermal-expansion honeycomb structure suitable for an application such as a car exhaust gas purifying catalyst carrier by use of the kaolin particles whose index is not less than a predetermined value. A certain amount of kaolin particles 1 are pressed and filled into a container 2, peak intensities of the kaolin particles 1 in (200), (020), and (002) faces are measured by X-ray diffraction, respectively, and a cleavage index of the kaolin particles 1 is calculated from the resultant measured values by the following equation (1): Cleavage index=(002)/[(200)+(020)+(002)]??(Equation 1), wherein (200), (020), and (002) denote values of the peak intensities of the kaolin particles measured in the (200), (020), and (002) faces by the X-ray diffraction, respectively.
