  • Patent number: 4176414
Abstract: An improved sofa-sleeper structure having a foldable bed frame, the bed frame including a cloth front deck and a cloth rear deck. The cloth decks are fixed one to the other, e.g., by stitching, at their adjoining edges, and are attached by tension springs to the bed frame. A tensioning device extends between side members of the bed frame in the area where the front and rear decks are fixed together, the tensioning device maintaining the front deck relatively taut when the bed frame is folded into the sofa attitude, thereby aiding in establishing a spring surface for the sofa's cushions. A mattress is connected to the cloth front and rear decks in fixed fashion around its periphery, e.g., by stitching, thereby stabilizing the mattress in position on the bed frame.

  • Patent number: 4175297
Abstract: The present invention relates to an alternating inflatable support for the human body. The invention includes a flexible pillow having a plurality of fluid impervious pockets therein which are substantially flat when deflated, but which support an adjacent section of the human body when inflated with a fluid under pressure. The pockets are interspersed and grouped into an operably coupled first set of pockets and an operably coupled second set of pockets. A pump is provided which includes at least one pumping chamber for receiving and expelling fluid under pressure. A solenoid is operably coupled to the pumping chambers for compressing and expanding the pumping chambers. A valve is operably coupled between the pump and the flexible pillow for alternately inflating and exhausting the fluid through the first set of pockets and the second set of pockets, thereby alternately supporting the interspersed sections of the body adjacent to the first set of the pockets and the second set of pockets.

  • Patent number: 4174547
Abstract: A hospital bed structure, in particular a power elevating and lowering arrangement which is relatively simple in construction and at the same time provides substantially instant Trendelenburg position in the event of emergency, particularly when the bed is in an elevated position, such structure including means for permitting the head end of the bed to automatically lower to the desired Trendelenburg position. The operation may be controlled by relatively simple, fool-proof manual controls that are arranged for ready access and actuation in the event of an emergency. The invention also utilizes a novel U-shaped lower bed structure which readily accommodates the operating linkage and at the same time permits, for example, the use of bed pans, movable toilets and the like.

  • Patent number: 4173049
Abstract: A safety liner for retaining liquids in a confined volume wherein liquid impervious side and bottom walls are positionable into the liquid retaining position by reason of flotation means or buoyant portions maintaining the side walls in the liquid confining relationship to prevent liquid spills and runoffs. An exemplary use of the safety liner is as a safety flotation liner for use in waterbed structures wherein inadvertent rupture of the water mattress will prevent water spills by reason of use of the flotation liner, which will permit emptying of the escaped water in a safe and efficacious manner without damage to the surroundings.

  • Patent number: 4172301
Abstract: Apparatus and method are disclosed which pertain to inflatable structures useful as air beds and the like. Shape and load control are facilitated by a plurality of bladders that are located within an inflatable chamber of the structure and are joined to opposed imperforate walls thereof. The bladders are provided with vents which lend to the interior of the chamber, and upon inflation of the structure and resultant separation of the opposed walls of the chamber, the bladders are caused to extend from a flattened state, become filled with the fluid used for inflating the structure, and assume a roughly cylindrical convoluted configuration. Being made of a flexible, substantially non-extensible material, such a vinyl plastics, there is a limit to which the bladders can extend, and further vertical separation or lateral shifting of the attached opposed walls is thereby restrained.

  • Patent number: 4170800
Abstract: A convertible couch or chair has a stationary frame that stands on the floor and which has an upper support surface with a front and a back, and a guide inclined upwardly toward the front. A movable frame has a pair of front legs which rest in the floor at all times, and a back end which can move along the guide between an out position with this back end supported on the front of the stationary frame and an in position with the back end at the back of the stationary frame. A seat cushion is held on the movable frame and a backrest is secured to the stationary frame by a pair of arms that allow pivoting of this backrest on the arms between a seat position erect at the back of the stationary frame and a bed position in front of the front leg of the stationary frame. A back leg on the backrest stands in the floor in this bed position and a loose cushion that normally rests atop the seat cushion is positioned on the frame in the out positions.

  • Patent number: 4165138
Abstract: A dispenser for sheet material having stations for primary and reserve rolls of the material is characterized by improved mechanisms for transferring feed of the sheet material from the primary roll to the reserve roll upon complete exhaustion of the primary roll.In the disclosed embodiments the dispenser is a roll paper towel dispensing cabinet, and a feed mechanism initially receives and delivers paper from the primary roll to the exterior of the cabinet. The transfer mechanism senses the presence of the primary roll web at the feed mechanism and, irrespective of the tension of the web between the feed mechanism and the roll, automatically transfers the beginning of the web of the reserve roll to the feed mechanism only upon movement of the very end of the primary roll web past the feed mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4161045
Abstract: A mattress of improved support having planar top and bottom surfaces is provided with at least two sets of transversely extending ribs. The ribs, which may be continuous or discontinuous, are less compressible than the material of the mattress and are spaced apart longitudinally from each other within each set. The sets are spaced apart longitudinally to correspond in position to the shoulder area and buttocks area of the user to provide maximum support for body areas of greater weight, and hold the body generally straight. Another embodiment of the invention employs relatively small support plates uniformly distributed between the layers of a multi-layer mattress to provide uniform support over the entire area of the mattress.
