Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for avoiding fracturing, e.g., thermo-mechanical fracturing, in vitrified biological systems via rapid cooling and/or warming persufflation techniques, by reducing the domain size of fracturing and by reducing thermal gradients. Also disclosed is a system adapted to rapidly cool and warm vitrifiable vascular biological tissue by persufflation, significantly reducing cryoprotectant toxicity from that of surface cooled tissue, in which the system is constructed and configured to use one or more of helium gas, hydrogen gas, neon gas, argon gas, krypton gas, xenon gas, oxygen gas, or various gaseous compounds. The system can be operated under pressure to increase the density and heat capacity of the gas relative to its density and heat capacity at atmospheric pressure and to cool the gas by one or more of mechanical action and by the phase change of a material such as a cryogenic gas or solid.
Abstract: In this disclosure, a process for producing biomass pellets and sugars from cellulosic biomass is provided, comprising: extracting the feedstock with steam and/or hot water and optionally with an acid catalyst, to produce cellulose-rich solids and an extract liquor containing hemicellulosic oligomers and lignin; separating the cellulose-rich solids from the extract liquor; filtering the extract liquor to remove at least some of the lignin, thereby generating a filter permeate comprising cleaned extract liquor containing the hemicellulosic oligomers and a filter retentate comprising a lignin-rich stream; hydrolyzing the hemicellulosic oligomers in the cleaned extract liquor with an acid or enzymes, to generate hemicellulosic monomers which are recovered; and pelletizing the cellulose-rich solids to form biomass pellets, wherein the pelletizing utilizes at least some of the lignin-rich stream as a binder or binder component.
Abstract: Provided is a method of producing a fatty acid ester in a high yield through a simple operation using Euglena as a material. The method of producing a fatty acid ester comprises the following steps (a) and (b): (a) adding 0.001 to 9.5 [PU/g-dry cell] of at least one kind of protease to Euglena to react the Euglena and the protease in an aqueous phase; and (b) performing phase separation and collection of a fatty acid ester from a reaction liquid of the step (a).
Abstract: A method and a means are provided, by which multiple types of cells can be simultaneously measured with high sensitivity by an ATP luminescence method. A method for measuring cells in a sample is provided, which comprises the steps of adding methanol to a sample suspected of containing viable cells to increase ATP within viable cells, extracting intracellular ATP, and causing extracted ATP to emit luminescence.
Abstract: The invention relates to methods and kits for the analysis of the sialylation of gluco-proteins. The samples of gluco-protein are incubated separately under three conditions: with beta-galactosidase, with beta-galactosidase+alpha-sialidase, and without an enzyme. After the enzyme treatment, high performance anion exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC PAD) is used to make a quantitative determination of the total galactose in the sample, the non sialylated galactose and the exogenous galactose in the medium. The determination of said values makes it possible to deduce the percentage of sialylation of the gluco-protein.
Abstract: Disclosed are compositions and methods for reducing blood alcohol content following alcohol consumption. The inventive compositions and methods rapidly reduce blood alcohol content and alleviate symptoms of intoxication in a subject having an elevated blood alcohol content due to alcohol consumption.

Abstract: Integrated processes are provided for the bioconversion of syngas to oxygenated organic compound with the ability to recycle sulfur nutrient and generate sulfur nutrient to the syngas fermentation in a safe and cost-effective manner. In preferred aspects of the invention, an acidogenic digestion is used to provide a biogas containing hydrogen sulfide, and then a methanogenic fermentation can follow to provide a methane-containing biogas that has a low hydrogen sulfide concentration.
Abstract: Bioactive coatings that are stabilized against inactivation by weathering are provided including a base associated with a chemically modified enzyme, and, optionally a first polyoxyethylene present in the base and independent of the enzyme. The coatings are optionally overlayered onto a substrate to form an active coating facilitating the removal of organic stains or organic material from food, insects, or the environment.

Abstract: A composition and method for generating reagents and the composition of these reagents for the stabilization and preservation of viability of cancer tissue which has been surgically excised and the suspension and/or termination of apoptosis (cell death) by significant modulation of cell metabolism by low molar concentrations of synergistic chemistries and hormonal growth enhancers while maintaining normal gene expression patterns of the surgically excised tissue.
Abstract: Silk is purified to eliminate immunogenic components (particularly sericin) and is used to form fabric that is used to form tissue-supporting prosthetic devices for implantation. The fabrics can carry functional groups, drugs, and other biological reagents. Applications include hernia repair, tissue wall reconstruction, and organ support, such as bladder slings. The silk fibers are arranged in parallel and, optionally, intertwined (e.g., twisted) to form a construct; sericin may be extracted at any point during the formation of the fabric, leaving a construct of silk fibroin fibers having excellent tensile strength and other mechanical properties.

Abstract: Amount of combined nitric oxide or nitric oxide present as iron nitrosyls in a blood sample is determined by directing a low power electromagnetic radiation beam at a blood sample to liberate nitric oxide gas, dissolving the liberated nitric oxide gas and electrochemically detecting amount of dissolved nitric oxide gas.
Abstract: Glucosyl stevia compositions are prepared from steviol glycosides of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni. The glucosylation was performed by cyclodextrin glucanotransferase using starch as the source of glucose residues. The short-chain glucosyl stevia compositions were purified to >95% content of total steviol glycosides. The compositions can be used as sweetness enhancers, flavor enhancers and sweeteners in foods, beverages, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
Abstract: Methods are provided for separating algae from an aqueous environment. An aqueous feed containing algae can be mixed in a turbulent manner in an aerated environment. The turbulent mixing can be sufficient to create a foam within the aqueous feed. The formation of the foam can also result in agglomeration of algae into larger size algae aggregates, which can then be filtered under pressure. Due to the larger size of the algae aggregates, the pressurized filtration can reduce/minimize the tendency to clog the filter, as the algae aggregates can generally be too large to fit within the pores of the filter. The filter can preferably be located at the bottom of the vessel holding the aqueous feed. This can assist in allowing the algae to remain in a cake above the filter, as opposed to having the algae dissolve back into the aqueous feed.

Abstract: Microorganisms, particularly bacteria, are identified and characterized on the basis of a mass spectrometric measurement of their protein profiles with ionization by matrix-assisted laser desorption. In order to measure the microbial resistance to antibiotics, the protein profiles of microorganisms are measured after cultivation for a short time duration in nutrient media containing the antibiotics.
Abstract: Tissue fixed charge density (FCD) is identified as another potential therapeutic target for reducing brain tissue swelling. Reduction of the FCD could reduce the thermodynamic force driving water entry into the brain. The present invention discloses chondroitinase ABC (ChABC) reduces tissue FCD and reduces tissue swelling, indicating that it may be an effective treatment to reduce edema and control intracranial pressure.
