Abstract: A composition and method for generating reagents and the composition of these reagents for the stabilization and preservation of viability of cancer tissue which has been surgically excised and the suspension and/or termination of apoptosis (cell death) by significant modulation of cell metabolism by low molar concentrations of synergistic chemistries and hormonal growth enhancers while maintaining normal gene expression patterns of the surgically excised tissue.

Abstract: Microorganisms, particularly bacteria, are identified and characterized on the basis of a mass spectrometric measurement of their protein profiles with ionization by matrix-assisted laser desorption. In order to measure the microbial resistance to antibiotics, the protein profiles of microorganisms are measured after cultivation for a short time duration in nutrient media containing the antibiotics.
Abstract: An object of the present invention is to provide a method in which a fat and/or oil is produced by a transesterification reaction using a lipase. Specifically, the present invention relates to a method for producing a transesterified fat and/or oil, comprising: (1) a low-temperature clay treatment step of bringing a fat and/or oil and a clay into contact with each other at 30 to 80° C. to obtain a reaction substrate; and (2) a step of subjecting the reaction substrate to a transesterification reaction in the presence of a lipase-containing composition.
Abstract: [Problem] To provide a bacterial cellulose which is highly dispersible in a liquid, shows excellent molding properties and high miscibility with other materials when applied to materials, and, therefore, has a high applicability as a practical material, and a bacterium which produces the bacterial cellulose. [Solution] A bacterial cellulose, water that contains said bacterial cellulose at a final concentration of 0.1±0.006 (w/w) showing a light transmittance at a wavelength of 500 nm of 35% or greater, and a bacterium producing the bacterial cellulose. According to the present invention, the bacterial cellulose that is uniformly dispersible in a liquid such as water can be obtained. The bacterial cellulose shows excellent molding properties and high miscibility with other materials and, therefore, can contribute to the improvement in the qualities of a final product or production efficiency thereof or to the reduction of production cost.

Abstract: Multi-stage, biological processes and systems for converting a C1 carbon source to desired end products are described. The processes comprise dividing a gaseous C1-containing substrate, in parallel, among multiple bioreactor stages. Liquid products are successively fed, in series, from a first bioreactor stage to downstream bioreactor stages. Operation can be simplified by avoiding the requirement for microorganism separation and recycle at each stage. In addition, overall vapor-liquid mass transfer for the combined stages is very favorable, leading to high end product productivity with comparably low byproduct metabolite productivity.

Abstract: Glucosyl stevia compositions are prepared from steviol glycosides of Stevia rebaudianaBertoni. The glucosylation was performed by cyclodextrin glucanotransferase using the starch as source of glucose residues. The short-chain glucosyl steviacompositions were purified to >95% content of total steviol glycosides. The compositions can be used as sweetness enhancers, flavor enhancers and sweeteners in foods, beverages, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
Abstract: A process for producing and controlling pyruvate derived products during the fermentation of a CO containing substrate by an acetogenic carboxydotrophic microorganism has been developed. The process involves increasing the concentration of at least one nutrient selected from the group consisting of vitamin B1, vitamin B5, vitamin B7 and mixtures thereof above the cellular requirement of the microorganism. When the concentration is increased, the production of 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) increases whereas the production of the other metabolites is virtually unchanged. The effect is reversible so that when the concentration is decreased, the production of 2,3-BDO is also decreased. This allows one to control the ratio of ethanol:2,3-BDO to a desired value which can vary from about 4:1 to about 1:2.
Abstract: The present invention is related to a method for evaluation of drug efficacy of a medicine having a therapeutic or preventive effect against a disease related to EL activity wherein phosphatidylinositol or lysophosphatidylinositol is used as an indicator. The present invention is also related to a method for screening an inhibitor of EL activity using phosphatidylinositol and a kit for use in the method.
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for preparing Te(O) in a low toxic form from toxic Te(IV) using metal-reducing bacteria and iron ions. According to the present invention, extracellular tellurium nanorods can be prepared through an environmentally friendly process and are able to provide tellurium utilizable in petroleum refining, electronic devices, batteries, and sensors.

Abstract: A method and kit are provided for enhancing the tolerance of an assay reagent to compounds in an assay sample, the assay reagent including a luciferase enzyme. The method includes contacting the luciferase with a tolerance enhancement agent in an amount sufficient to substantially protect luciferase enzyme activity from interference of the compound and minimize interference by at least about 10% relative to an assay not having tolerance enhancement agent.
