  • Patent number: 6567664
Abstract: A re-registration authorization is attached to a registration request or data packet sent from a mobile node roaming on a foreign network. The mobile node requests registration with its home network in order to maintain communication with the Internet and maintain identification of the mobile node by its individual home address. Such registration has a limited lifetime, and the re-registration authorization attached to the registration request or other data packet authorizes an intermediate communication entity in the foreign network to re-register the mobile node, on behalf of the mobile node, with the mobile node's home network, if the communication traffic of the mobile node indicates that the mobile node is still roaming on the foreign network. The rate of error is reduced by significantly reducing the amount of transmissions sent from the mobile node, and power consumption of the typically battery-powered mobile unit is reduced, as well.

  • Patent number: 6564068
Abstract: The present invention addresses the need for an apparatus and method for providing a communication service to a communication unit (112) with acceptable audio quality, when a serving site (109) does not have sufficient resources. To obtain the required communication resources, base sites (106-108) whose wireless coverage areas overlap the serving base site are considered. Before selecting an alternate base site to provide the communication service, the present invention, in contrast to the prior art, determines whether the alternate base site is capable of providing the communication service to the communication unit with an acceptable level of quality. If it is, the alternate base site is selected to provide the communication service to the communication unit.

  • Patent number: 6564047
Abstract: A system and method of communications usage management for multiple networked devices such as cellular telephones in a telecommunications network. A management database is provided for storing communications attributes for at least one networked device. The stored communications usage attributes serve as criteria for regulating access of the networked devices to the system. The users of the devices may purchase a quantity of transferable units, such as usage minutes over the system network, with the units being redeemable for goods and/or services on the system, thus facilitating transfer of units between users. A user interface is provided as a system management device for accessing the management database to configure the communications usage attributes for defining the transfer and usage criteria. Communications usage software operable with the network devices computes usage times to provide an accounting of usage and regulation in accordance with the management database.

  • Patent number: 6564038
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for suppressing interference in a radio frequency (RF) communication system using active shielding techniques. An opposing neutralizing signal is applied to actively neutralize stray signals in a microwave communication environment. An interfering or stray signal is detected using a sensing antenna, and the opposing neutralizing signal is generated in response thereto. The opposing neutralizing signal is applied to a signal neutralizing shield to shield any desired components or devices. The opposing neutralizing signal is approximately 180 degrees out of phase, and of equal magnitude to the detected interfering signal. A phase shifter/null feedback device receives the detected stray signal, if any, and adaptively adjusts the phase and magnitude of the opposing neutralizing signal. In one embodiment, the phase shifter/null feedback device includes an integrator that generates a DC value that is proportional to the energy of the interfering signal.

  • Patent number: 6564064
Abstract: A cellular telephone having a global positioning system (GPS) receiver using a blended combination of GPS signals from GPS satellites and GPS pseudolites for determining a location. The cellular telephone includes a cellphone transceiver and a GPS receiver. The cellular transceiver receives wireless downlink cellphone signals from the cell site transceiver and transmits wireless uplink cellphone signals to the cell site transceiver. The cell site transceiver passes voice and data from the downlink and uplink cellphone signals within a local area into the worldwide network of telephone services. The GPS receiver receives satellite GPS signals from GPS satellites and pseudolite GPS signals from GPS pseudolites. The GPS pseudolites augment the GPS satellites for the local area by broadcasting pseudolite GPS signals having location-determination information with a format that is similar to the format in the satellite GPS signals.

  • Patent number: 6560449
Abstract: In a communications receiver for quadrature demodulation, a feedback technique for reducing the image response of the receiver. The communications receiver includes an I demodulator and a Q demodulator. A local oscillator (LO) signal is provided by a PLL to a quadrature LO generator that provides an LO_I signal to an I demodulator and an LO_Q signal to a Q demodulator. The LO_I and LO_Q signals are amplitude and phase-controlled versions of the LO signal. An image/signal ratio (I/S) detector detects the relative phase difference and the relative amplitude difference between the respective output terminals of the I demodulator and the Q demodulator and applies an amplitude control signal and a phase control signal to corresponding amplitude control and phase control inputs of the quadrature LO generator. The I/S detector calibrates the quadrature LO generator during the interstitial interval between the reception of data packets.

  • Patent number: 6556814
Abstract: A power amplifier load adjust system includes a power amplifier and a variable impedance network coupled to the output of the power amplifier. The variable impedance network presents a plurality of impedances to the output of the power amplifier responsive to a load control signal. A control circuit generates a transmit power command and a channel frequency command. Memory stores a plurality of control values as a function of output power and frequency. A processing circuit coupled to the variable impedance network, the control circuit, and the memory retrieves the plurality of control values and uses them to generate the load control signal in response to the transmit power command and the channel frequency command.

  • Patent number: 6553217
Abstract: One or more preferred call numbers are defined and managed for mobile subscribers. A destination number dialed with the call is compared to the preferred call numbers for the mobile subscriber. When the destination call number is identical to a preferred call number, the call charges are determined by a charging device in the mobile network in a different manner than the usual charge. The storing of the preferred call numbers can occur at the mobile station side in a mobile station or at the network side. Based on the subscriber-specific stipulation of preferred call numbers, mobile subscribers have the ability to select and define specific call destinations which are charged differently than other calls, for instance according to a more favorable fee schedule. This increases the flexibility of the mobile subscribers and network operators with respect to the scheduling of calling rates.

  • Patent number: 6553229
Abstract: Multiple-mode cellular radiotelephones use a wide bandwidth receiving mode while scanning for signals in a narrow bandwidth receiving mode. Thus, when it is desired to scan the received frequency band to search for the presence of narrowband signals, the wider receiver bandwidth is first selected. When significant signal energy is identified in the wider bandwidth, a further scan using the narrowband mode may then be provided in order to locate the narrow bandwidth channel containing the strongest signal. In another embodiment, the signals that are received in the wider bandwidth mode are digitized to obtain complex signal samples. The complex signal samples are then processed to determine energy in each of a plurality of narrower bandwidths corresponding to channels in the narrower bandwidth cellular radiotelephone standards.

  • Patent number: 6553236
Abstract: A wireless communications system supports affinity groups of like minded individuals who wish to know locations of other members of the affinity group. The system supports members of the affinity group querying, through a mobile terminal for the location of a remote member of the affinity group as sensed by the remote member's mobile terminal. Rather than report raw geocoordinates, location place-name descriptions are defined by the members of the affinity group and shared amongst one another. Additionally, situational alarms may be generated in the event certain user defined criteria are met, such as two remote members of the affinity group being in close proximity to one another.
