  • Patent number: 6496493
Abstract: A handoff trial method by a mobile station that compares a pilot power strength of a base station providing communication service to the mobile station with a pilot power strength of a neighboring base station and attempts to handoff based on the comparing results. As a result of comparing, if the difference is larger than a pilot threshold to try handoff, the mobile station transmits a signal measurement message to the service base station for handoff to the neighboring base station. Also, if the mobile station communicated with a plurality of base stations tries to cut calls with the base stations, the mobile station measures pilot power strengths of the service base stations compares therebetween. As a result of the comparing, if the difference is smaller than a pilot threshold to cut call, the mobile station tries to cut call with the associated base station.

  • Patent number: 6496498
Abstract: A method is provided for interfacing telecommunication devices. A base unit is connected to a landline for wireless communication. The base unit has a power supply operating at a power supply frequency. A mobile unit is provided for wireless communication with the base unit. The base unit is interfaced to the mobile unit using an interface protocol that has a plurality of frames. Each frame is for transmitting signals from the mobile unit to the base unit and from the base unit to the mobile unit. The frames have a specified frame length. An interference frequency is detected at either the base unit or the mobile unit. The interference frequency is compared with the power supply frequency. The frames are synchronized with the power supply and the specified frame length is adjusted based on the power supply frequency when the interference frequency and the power supply frequency are substantially the same.

  • Patent number: 6493551
Abstract: Method and system integrating wireless/wireline and circuit/packet networks (to bypass GSM Memorandum of Understandings) for cellular/PCS services so that GSM subscribers roaming into CDMA networks can be provided with basic wireless call delivery services as long as the roamers can pay the bill with their valid credit card. This is achieved by integrating wireless and wireline networks as well as circuit and packet networks, using IP networks and protocols as an alternative to the existing telephony-based approach.

  • Patent number: 6493559
Abstract: An unacknowledged, reliable short message service cell broadcast message reception protocol method to enable short message service cell broadcast messages to be constructed from the fragments of the multiple repetitions of the cell broadcast service messages which are repeated on the cell broadcast channel. When a new message block, corresponding to a recognized type of cell broadcast service message, is geographically coherent with existing partially received data or contains message components previously received, and is temporally coherent with previously received message blocks, the new message block is inserted within a received message structure. If the received message structure is complete and correctly received, the complete message is assembled and sent to an upper software layer.

  • Patent number: 6493543
Abstract: An apparatus and method reduce out-of-band frequency components of an amplified, multichannel RF signal able to have at least two frequency bandwidth limited signal channels, each channel having a respective carrier frequency which is not known in advance. The channels can, for example, be dedicated to CDMA signals. Each channel of the amplified RF signal has both in-band frequency components and out-of-band frequency components. The apparatus and method feature a network for amplifying an input signal for producing the amplified RF signal, the network having adjustable electrical characteristics, and a control system connected to the network for locating a frequency within the bandwidth of one of the channels of the amplified RF signal and for detecting energy in the out-of-band frequency components for the one located channel for producing control signals relating to the energy in that one channel.

  • Patent number: 6493549
Abstract: An improved method of updating parameters stored in memory of mobile telecommunications stations. An object model represents all the parameters that can be modified in an IS-683A mobile station. The details of the physical location of each parameter are defined in this mobile object model. Advantageously, when any parameter is changed or added, it is necessary to provide the computer system, which generates messages to be transmitted to the mobile station, only the identification and value of the parameter to be added or changed. The computer system then generates a message sequence that defines the memory location in the mobile station to be changed, and the new value of the data for that memory location. Advantageously, this arrangement sharply reduces the total number of airwave messages transmitted to the mobile station in order to change or add a parameter.

  • Patent number: 6490270
Abstract: In a wireless communication system, the constellation mapping scheme employed may be changed on a per-time-slot basis, i.e., from time slot to time slot, so that the constellation used to encode the symbols of each time slot may be different for each time slot within a single frame and may be different for a particular time slot in different consecutive frames. In other words, several constellation mapping schemes are available, with each providing the ability to transmit a different number of bits per symbol, and the particular constellation mapping scheme employed for any time slot need be selected for that time slot only. The ability to use any particular constellation mapping scheme is dependent on the current channel quality. The particular constellation mapping used for the user data of the time slot may be indicated in the preamble of the time slot.

  • Patent number: 6487417
Abstract: A method, executed on a simulation system (20), characterizes propagation of a radiofrequency signal (56) in a three-dimensional environment (52). The method includes forming a database (42) of propagation paths (54) of the radiofrequency signal (56) transmitted from a transmitter (58) at a fixed location (66) in the three-dimensional environment (52). The propagation paths (54) are represented by a plurality of line segments (120, 122) in the database (42). Local line segments (188) are selected from the plurality of line segments (120, 122) to establish a subset (47) of the propagation paths (54). The subset (47) includes those propagation paths (54) each having one of the local line segments (188) proximate a location (182) of a receiver (72) in the environment (52). Distinct multipath components (246) representing distinct wavefronts of the radiofrequency signal (56) are subsequently identified from the subset (47) of the propagation paths (54).

  • Patent number: 6487415
Abstract: A method that initiates call blocking responsive to a call-quality measurement of the forward link. The call-quality measurement is a measurement of how well a mobile terminal is able to receive the forward link. One call-quality measurement is a pilot fraction of the forward link, which is a ratio of the pilot's power level to the power level of a set of forward-link signals of a base station. Call blocking is initiated when an average pilot fraction is below a pilot-fraction blocking threshold. The pilot's power level is obtained for a time period, and the signal set's power level is obtained for the same time period. The pilot fraction is determined for the time period, and then used to determine the average pilot fraction for the time period. The average pilot fraction for the current time period is based on a pilot fraction for the current time period, and an average pilot fraction for a previous time period.

  • Patent number: 6484032
Abstract: A path connection control system in a CDMA mobile communication system can establish minimum but sufficient paths without causing degradation of communication quality due to delay of hand off control even during high speed travel. • Patent number: 6483815
Abstract: A power consumption reduction method for a mobile radio station in a digital mobile radio system is proposed. During a dedicated mode of the mobile radio station in which the mobile radio station should perform power measurements on BCCH carriers of neighboring cells, as many as possible measurements are squeezed in a single frame, within the stabilizing capabilities of a frequency synthesizer comprised in the mobile radio station. Next succeeding frames are freed of power measurements. In the time intervals freed from power measurements, the mobile radio station adopts a power down mode so that considerable power savings are achieved.
