  • Patent number: 4784020
Abstract: A vehicle automatic transmission includes a torque converter, and also includes a gear transmission mechanism. This gear transmission mechanism includes a manual range setting valve and a plurality of friction engaging mechanisms. Selective engagement of combinations of these friction engaging mechanisms, when the manual range setting valve is set to a forward range, causes the gear transmission mechanism to provide various forward speed stages. In this anti creep control method, a test is performed as to whether anti creep provision conditions hold, the anti creep provision conditions including whether or not the manual range setting valve is set to a forward range, and whether or not the vehicle is substantially stationary.

  • Patent number: 4784007
Abstract: A vehicle transmission system has an internal lever for changing transmission gears, a select actuator for moving the internal lever to neutral positions N1, N2, N3 in a first direction, a shift actuator for moving the internal lever to 1st-5th gear positions and a reverse position in a second direction substantially normal to the first direction, and a clutch actuator for actuating a clutch. While any one of the actuators is in operation, the pressure of a fluid discharged from the operating actuator is prevented from acting on the select actuator and/or the shift actuator which is not in operation by applying a fluid pressure to the inoperative select actuator and/or the shift actuator to fix the actuator or actuators in a current position against operation, thereby allowing the transmission gears to be changed accurately and smoothly.

  • Patent number: 4784014
Abstract: A robot joint has a support carrying a rotary robot arm. An electric drive motor is mounted on the support and its drive shaft is coupled to the robot arm by harmonic drive-type reduction gears. The reduction gears include an elastically deformable, externally toothed ring whose elliptical shape is rotated by the drive shaft. The externally toothed ring itself is stationary and is firmly connected to the support by a flexible sleeve provided at its free end with a rigid mounting flange. The annular mounting face of the flange and the opposite mounting face on the support is each provided with radial teeth, preferably in the form of Hirth-type gears, which guarantee an accurate centering of the sleeve and safeguard the same against turning. Preferably, the flange is fastened to the end face of a steel bushing which is pressed into a bore in the support and secured against turning by knurled serrations.

  • Patent number: 4781078
Abstract: An improved limited slip differential gear assembly for driving each axle of a pair of coaxially aligned vehicle axles at the same rotational speed or at relatively different rotational speeds as conditions require. The assembly includes an improved externally controllable clutch mechanism for preventing excessive relative rotation of the axles. The amount of the clutch force being applied to resist relative rotation may be varied independently of the relative rotational speed of the axles and also of the torque level in the gear assembly. Preferably the clutch mechanism is incorporated in a planetary wheel type differential and is activated electromagnetically. The clutch mechanism may include a cam operated supplemental clutch device for applying an additional clutch force in response to any continued relative rotation which may occur after the first clutching force has been applied by the electromagnet.

  • Patent number: 4779487
Abstract: An all-wheel limited slip differential system in the power train of the front axle and the rear axle of a motor vehicle has an intermediate planetary transmission in the direct through drive and a braking device that is engageable at its planetary carrier. A braking member is connected with the planetary carrier and the counterbraking member interacting with it is connected with the output shaft to the rear axle in a torsionally fixed manner. In order to keep the required braking moment and the braking device small, the ratio of the gear to the braking device is significantly higher than the ratio for the direct through drive.

  • Patent number: 4777848
Abstract: An automatic transmission for an automotive vehicle is selectively operable either in a first mode of providing a first, a second next to the first and a third next to the second speed stages, or in a second mode of providing the first and the third speed stages while skipping the second stage. The upshifting from the first speed stage to the second speed stage according to the first mode is effected at a lower vehicle road speed than the upshifting from the first speed stage to the third speed stage according to the second mode for the same load on the engine of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4776228
Abstract: An improved strutless synchronizer has an annular spring interposed between an internally splined sleeve, mounted for axial sliding movement on a main shaft, and an associated blocking ring. Selected ones of the sleeve splines are formed at the extremities with radially inwardly extending teeth. Each of the teeth has a dual chamfered face portion in opposed relation with the annular spring. The blocking ring has three equally spaced lugs each formed with a transverse groove sized to axially capture the annular spring so as to allow the spring freedom to rotate in its grooves relative to the blocking ring. Each time the sleeve is moved toward meshed engagement with an associated main shaft ratio gear its spline teeth chamfered faces compress the spring at random points thereby minimizing spring wear. Also, the grooves, by positively retaining the spring, insure instant unloading of the blocking ring.

  • Patent number: 4774858
Abstract: Engine control apparatus for use in passenger cars and other applications includes a special calibration of the engine intake mixture preparation system. Although this calibration duplicates the optimum calibration for use with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), the apparatus instead includes, for reasons of practicality, a discrete-ratio powershift transmission. Also included is a feedback control system which dispenses with the conventional mechanical connection between accelerator pedal and engine throttle valve. This drive-by-wire control system operates the engine as closely as is practical to the optimum CVT engine operating schedule, a predominantly wide-open-throttle engine operating schedule. The overall combination of special engine calibration and drive-by-wire control with a discrete-ratio transmission can offer the majority of the fuel economy advantage available with a CVT.

  • Patent number: 4771654
Abstract: A gear system has a planetary gear (5) mounted on a conical main shaft (8) in such a manner to move axially thereon, the planetary gear being in meshing engagement with a central gear (3). A receiving device is provided to receive thrust generated at the planetary gear (5). When a plurality of planetary gears (5) are employed, a clearance (S) formed between the surface of the conical main shaft (8) and an inner peripheral surface of a bearing (17) of each planetary gear (5) is changed according to the axial position of each gear (5) on the conical shaft (8) under the influence of a thrust counterbalancing device. Thus, a distance between the center axis of the conical shaft (8) and that of the planetary gear (5) is thereby increased or decreased to effect even application of load to each planetary gear (5).

  • Patent number: 4770066
Abstract: An engine brake control for a transmission is disclosed. The transmission includes a hydraulically operated clutch selectively establishing a drive connection between a first rotary member and a second rotary member, and a one-way clutch arranged in parallel to the hydraulically operated clutch such that when the hydraulically operated clutch is released the one-way clutch transmits forward torque from the first rotary member to the second rotary member, but interrupts transmission of reverse torque to the first rotary member from the second rotary member. When a driver demands engine brake, a manual selector valve generates an engine brake command fluid pressure.

  • Patent number: 4768400
Abstract: An actuator arrangement includes epicyclic gearing having compound planetary gears each of whose pinions respectively mesh with a ring gear on a relatively fixed body and with two output ring gears to drive the latter in opposite directions relative to the body. The pinions which mesh with the ring gear on the body are free to rotate with respect to the remaining pinions and also mesh with a sun gear which is separate from, but driven by, the sun gear which drives the remaining pinions. The arrangement permits the gearing to overcome dimensional restraints imposed by prior art systems.
