Abstract: The invention is directed to a process for producing one or more fermentation product in a multi-stage process including an inoculation reactor and at least one bioreactor. The inoculation reactor is fed a C1-containing gaseous substrate containing a reduced amount of hydrogen. The hydrogen is reduced to increase the proportion of CO in the C1-containing gaseous substrate being provided to the inoculation reactor. The inoculation reactor ferments the CO-rich C1-containing gaseous substrate and produces an inoculum, which is fed to at least one bioreactor. The bioreactor receives the C1-containing gaseous substrate, which may or may not contain reduced amounts of hydrogen, to produce one or more fermentation product. By providing a CO-rich C1-containing gaseous substrate to the inoculation reactor, both the inoculation reactor and the subsequent bioreactor(s), are able to have increased stability and product selectivity.

Abstract: Processes for producing a nutritional supplement that contains sulforaphane, and supplements formed thereby. Such a process includes combining a cruciferous vegetable, for example, broccoli sprouts, with strains of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Streptococcus to form a mixture, causing the mixture to undergo lactic acid fermentation, transform a glucosinolate within the cruciferous vegetable to sulforaphane, and yield a fermented mixture that contains sulforaphane, and then producing from the fermented mixture a supplement that can be ingested by an individual.
Abstract: In one aspect, devices for collecting and enriching microbes are described herein. In some embodiments, such a device comprises a shape memory gel and a plurality of nanoantennas dispersed in the gel. The nanoantennas can be non-uniformly dispersed in the gel. Additionally, the nanoantennas are operable to receive an external signal and thereby induce a local change in state of the gel, such as a local change in thermodynamic state of the gel.

Abstract: A whole blood measurement method associated to hematocrit (HCT) and a whole blood measurement circuit thereof is applied in the detection of HCT of a whole blood sample to be tested. Herein, a time to digital converting circuit (TDC) is used for counting charging time or discharging time of a fixed capacitor and a to-be-tested sample, and a capacitance difference that is related to HCT is generated according to the charging time or the discharging time, so as to provide a reference for a whole blood feature test.

Abstract: A process for providing phycocyanin from a blue-green algae biomass comprising the steps of forming a slurry of blue-green algae by mechanically mixing the blue-green algae in water to break up filaments of the biomass and incubating the macerated slurry in a container with at least a 1% flocculating agent for a period of time sufficient to separate a blue extract from the slurry. The blue extract is separated and filtered through a filter to obtain a blue filtrate and the blue filtrate is mixed in a container with an ammonium sulfate precipitate for a suitable period of time to obtain supernatant protein separation. The supernatant is syphoned from the container and the settled participate is centrifuged at a rpm ranging from about 3500 rpm to about 4500 rpm for a sufficient time to produce phycocyanin precipitate.
Abstract: A composition comprising at least: a single extract obtained from a mixture of at least two plants selected from Chrysanthellum indicum, Cynara scolymus, Vaccinium myrtillus, Piper and Olea europaea. This composition is particularly useful as a nutritional product or health product for preventing and/or combating carbohydrate and/or fat metabolism disorders in humans and animals.
