  • Patent number: 10000423
Abstract: Top and bottom metal plates of a DMB panel stack are simultaneously direct-bonded to the central ceramic sheet in a single high-temperature step. During this step, the DMB panel rests on an array of very small upwardly projecting ceramic contacts of a ceramic carrier. An amount of unoxidized carbon (e.g., a layer of graphite) is disposed on each contact projection such that an amount of carbon is disposed between the top of the contact projection and the metal oxide skin of the bottom metal plate. The carbon bonds with oxygen from the metal oxide skin, thereby preventing connection or direct-bonding of the ceramic contact projection to the second metal plate. This reduces imperfections in the metal of the bottom plate and reduces the amount of ceramic particles bonded to metal at contact sites. As a result, less post-bonding processing is required to make a high quality DMB substrate.

  • Patent number: 9975199
Abstract: The invention refers to a process for rapid manufacturing that uses a focused ultrasound beam according to the invention. The process is based on the local ultrasound welding of the material (2) grains that is under a powder form, welding that takes place solely in the focal spot of the focused ultrasound beam, the focal spot being scanned across the X-Y-Z directions within the powder (2) bed so as to 3D build the entire object (7) that is desired. The processes taking place in the focal spot region are local melting, local melting due to friction followed by filling of the gaps existing between grains, removal of the grain asperities, local inter-diffusion between neighboring grains as well as other phenomena that take place at the interfaces between materials when these are subjected to an ultrasound field.

  • Patent number: 9962795
Abstract: An internal line-up clamp for welding pipe lengths end-to-end includes a clamp ring made up of a plurality of clamp ring elements that are angularly distributed around the circumference of the clamp ring. The clamp ring elements are divided into mutually opposed groups that are interdigitated such that the clamp ring elements alternate from one group to the other around the circumference of the clamp ring. A longitudinally-acting actuator system drives relative longitudinal movement of the groups to effect clamping expansion of the clamp ring by wedging interaction between the circumferentially-alternating clamp ring elements of the groups. By expanding the clamp ring in alignment with a weld plane between the abutting ends, the same clamp ring may be used to align the pipe lengths and to back a weld between them.

  • Patent number: 9937576
Abstract: A method for welding two or more conduits includes aligning end portions thereof in an abutting relationship to define a gap. The method includes performing a spatter free root weld along the gap to configure a root layer while the inner circumferential surface side is unobstructed. After the root weld is complete, an outward thrust is applied along the inner circumferential surfaces of the conduits. During the application of the outward thrust, a filler weld is performed along the gap to fill the gap and to facilitate shrinkage of the filler and root weld materials longitudinally and radially outward while preventing pressing out of the filler and root weld materials radially inward of the inner circumferential surface.
