  • Patent number: 9639434
Abstract: A method and an information handling system (IHS) provide hierarchical failure recovery for firmware components of the information handling system. According to one aspect, a hierarchical recovery and learning module (HRLM) detects firmware component failure. The HRLM initiates a hierarchical failure recovery by executing recovery sequences from a set of hierarchically ordered recovery sequences. The HRLM determines whether the detected failure was corrected by executing the recovery sequence. If the HRLM further determines that the failure is not corrected by executing the set of hierarchically ordered recovery sequences, the HRLM dynamically generates a new recovery sequence(s) using commands selected from at least one of the previously executed recovery sequences and executes the new recovery sequence(s). If the failure is corrected by a new recovery sequence, the HRLM forwards the particular recovery sequence to a customer support site for use by other systems in addressing similar or identical failures.

  • Patent number: 9639435
Abstract: A management computer stores an operation requirement of a virtual machine and a scheme of a first configuration change executed by a host computer or a storage apparatus. The management computer determines whether a second configuration change configured so as to be executed automatically in the host computer or the storage apparatus is executed. If it is determined that the second configuration change is executed, the management computer predicts a performance index value concerning a prescribed performance index for the computer or the storage apparatus when executing the second configuration change. The management computer determines whether an anticipated effect value of the configuration change scheme is satisfied based on the predicted performance index value, and creates a substitution plan satisfying both an operation requirement and an anticipated effect value of the virtual machine where it is determined that the anticipated effect value is not satisfied.

  • Patent number: 9632713
Abstract: Systems and methods for storage pruning can enable users to delete, edit, or copy backed up data that matches a pattern. Storage pruning can enable fine-grain deletion or copying of these files from backups stored in secondary storage devices. Systems and methods can also enable editing of metadata associated with backups so that when the backups are restored or browsed, the logical edits to the metadata can then be performed physically on the data to create a custom restore or a custom view. A user may perform operations such as renaming, deleting, modifying flags, and modifying retention policies on backed up items. Although the underlying data in the backup may not change, the view of the backup data when the user browses the backup data can appear to include the user's changes. A restore of the data can cause those changes to be performed on the backup data.

  • Patent number: 9632886
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for implementing an automated parallel deployment solution. Embodiments of the invention described herein prevent defects from being introduced in a production environment, or those that could be introduced in a production environment, by parallel log monitoring of existing and new state systems. One or more systems may be created in parallel to the production system to detect and fix defects. In embodiments of the invention, as existing defects are captured and resolved by the automatic defect resolution system and method, these defects will not impact production any further. Thus, the automatic defect resolution system drives out all production defects over a window of time, requiring less and less maintenance over time. Once a given defect is fixed, the corresponding change is applied to the production environment to avoid future similar defects.

  • Patent number: 9620165
Abstract: A system, method, and computer program product for the banded allocation of storage device address ranges in distributed parity schemes is disclosed. A storage system with storage devices logically divides up the storage devices into bands of contiguous logical block address ranges. A storage controller provisions logical volumes in the bands. Upon unavailability of a storage device, the data pieces are reconstructed at the next available data extent within the same band on the other storage devices. The storage controller detects a replacement drive and logically divides the replacement storage device into the same number of bands as on the other storage devices. The storage controller transfers the reconstructed data pieces to the replacement drive and places the data pieces within the same bands on the replacement drive.

  • Patent number: 9594623
Abstract: In a system on chip SoC, a memory control unit connected between the memory unit and the processing unit controls access to the memory unit. An update request received or generated by the processing unit triggers an update operation which comprises appending an update enabling record to a sequence of update records in the log region, writing new program code to the memory unit, and appending an update completion record to a sequence of update records. Write access to the log region is disabled if a fault is detected in the SoC during the update operation.

  • Patent number: 9594639
Abstract: A method begins by a processing module of a dispersed storage network (DSN) ascertaining a decode threshold value for dispersed storage error encoding data for storage in storage units of the DSN. The method continues with the processing module determining a total width value for the dispersed storage error encoding based on the decode threshold value, a number of selected sites within the DSN, and a number of selected storage units of the selected sites. The method continues with the processing module determining logical storage slots within the selected storage units based on the total width value, the number of selected, and the number of selected storage units. The method continues with the processing module writing a set of encoded data slices to a total width value of the logical storage slots within at least some of the selected storage units of the selected sites based on a slice-to-slot mapping.

  • Patent number: 9575865
Abstract: An abnormal state of an allocated task in a processing node is detected correctly without using any resource of the processing node. A power usage statistics storing unit 240 stores a statistical value representing a power usage of the processing node in a state of executing the task. A power usage comparing unit 250 compares a newly collected power usage of the processing node in a state of executing the task with the statistical value representing a power usage of the processing node, which is stored in the power usage statistics storing unit 250, to detect an abnormal state of the task in the processing node.
