  • Patent number: 4663913
Abstract: A method and apparatus for maintaining critical alignments between the neck of a container and closure application stations. The embodiment disclosed illustrates apparatus for handling containers during the process of filling and applying closures to the filled containers. A star wheel with outwardly opening container body pockets and a container guide rail receives filled containers as they are descending from a filling position, and moves the containers through closure pickup and pre-tightening apparatus to a closure applicating machine. A container neck guide receives and guides the necks of filled containers along a predetermined path through the pickup and pre-tightening stations. The neck guide, pickup and pre-tightening stations are supported on the same structure to insure that the predetermined alignment positions are maintained.

  • Patent number: 4660353
Abstract: Apparatus for cartoning liquid-filled pouches. A horizontal intermittent motion cartoner conveys cartons in a vertical orientation. At a first station, a hole is formed in a lower major flap. At a second station, glue is applied in a circular pattern around the hole. The flaps are then closed with the glue exposed to the inside bottom of the carton. A liquid-filled pouch is deposited by gravity into the carton. The upper portion of the pouch is tamped within the carton and the upper flaps closed and sealed.

  • Patent number: 4658566
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for sealing jars and other containers within specialized environments, such as a vacuum, is provided. The containers are introduced into chambers of a rotary drum, and an outer enclosure for the drum is provided by means of a substantially flexible moving belt which conforms to the periphery of the drum and seals the chambers. A vacuum may then be introduced to the chamber to evacuate the interior of the container, and the lid of the container may then be secured to maintain the desired vacuum within the container. The flexible belt may move in synchrony with the rotation of the drum, eliminating relative motion between the outer enclosure and the drum and avoiding need for complex sliding seals. The device is quickly adaptable to sealing and closing numerous configurations and sizes of containers.

  • Patent number: 4656811
Abstract: A continuous molding machine (10) for forming two chains (55) of soil plugs (50) for use in germinating seeds or otherwise growing plants. A continuous sheet of paper (22) is corrugated to conform to a series of mold elements (14) and a reaction mixture (32) of polymerizing agent and soil slurry is added over the paper to conform to the mold element shape. Another sheet of paper (38) is added over the top of the mixture (32) and the entire assembly is then passed under a series of pressure belts (42, 44, 46) during which time the mixture (32) is cured. The chain of soil plugs (50) which emerges from the pressure belts (42, 44, 46) is encased on both sides by paper (22, 38) and may be cut to provide a pair of separate soil plug chains (55).

  • Patent number: 4653252
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a combination of a case accommodating a flexible ynthetic plastics container or bag having a pouring opening and filled at least partly with liquid. The starting point for forming the case is a blank having such folding lines and cuts that when the blank is folded about the synthetic plastics bag, the latter is automatically fixed in the case being formed. The blank has two rectangular portions, one so-called base portion and a top face portion, which portions are interconnected by a second end face panel. The two edges of the base portion opposite the second end face panel and the top face portion connect with a first end face panel and a third end face panel, respectively. The opposed free edges of the base portion and the top face portion connect with side panels, and at least a part of the end face panels is provided with flaps. The various portions are interconnected by means of folding lines.

  • Patent number: 4650378
Abstract: Gear teeth of the gear being worked are machined by rotating the gear with a gear-type machining tool moved radially into tangential contact with the gear being worked. The relative of rotation rates of the gear and the tool are determined by the number of gear teeth in both the gear and the tool. The tooth width of the gear-type machining tool, which may be a worm gear, is less than the finished measurement of the tooth space of the gear being worked. When the gear-type tool reaches the prescribed manufacturing center distance, it is contiguous with the gear from one frontal face to the other. Two flanks of the gear are machined by feeding either the gear or tool in a direction perpendicular to the radial direction of movement so that the teeth of the tool can machine the gear tooth flanks as the gear and the tool rotate. First one flank of each tooth of the gear may be machined and then, by reversing the movement direction, the other flank of the tooth is machined.

  • Patent number: 4648758
Abstract: The drill stand has a vertical column and a clamp moveably mounted on the column. A carriage adapted to support a drill is moveably mounted on the column for movement with and with respect to the clamp. A link is pivoted on the clamp and has two pivot locations. A lever arm is pivotally connected to the carriage and has two roller pivots selectively engageable with either of the pivot locations to change the force multiplication and travel distance as the arm is pivoted about the selected pivot location. Each pivot location is at the end of a track having one portion on a curve centered on the link connection to the clamp and another portion on an arc centered on the pivot location associated with the other of the tracks. Each roller engages one of the tracks. The pivot locations are closer together than are the rollers so only one roller can be in a pivot location at one time.

  • Patent number: 4644732
Abstract: A disposable, portion controlled container for condiments and other comestibles formed from heat sealable material is disclosed, featuring an easy opening of the container by virtue of a unique fold and heat seal made at one corner of the container during manufacture. An inside reverse fold is made in one corner of the container and a heat seal made along a four thickness layer of this inside reverse fold defines a tear line, stronger than the adjacent material. A tab extended from this four thickness heat seal of the inside reverse fold provides the means for opening the container along the tear line. The size of the opening in the container is controlled by the initial width of material used to form the inside reverse fold.
