  • Patent number: 4108077
Abstract: A rail vehicle including means for converting energy released during braking of the vehicle to a stored potential energy which may be subsequently used to impart acceleration to the vehicle. Pressure accumulators are utilized where the accumulators include a gas which is compressed by braking forces and where the heat of the compressed gas is stored in latent heat storage elements contained within the accumulators. The track upon which the vehicle rides comprises a hermetically closed tubular chamber enclosing the vehicle and which is filled with water vapor to reduce drag on the vehicle.A method of propelling a rail vehicle including the steps of recovering the brake energy produced during braking to a stop, storing this energy and then using the energy to accelerate the vehicle from the stop.

  • Patent number: 4108079
Abstract: A releasable stop for releasably stopping a vehicle moving through a conduit. A stop gate is supported for pivotal movement into and out of the path of movement of the vehicle. First and second arms are pivotally connected together between the gate and a support and a pneumatic piston and cylinder assembly actuates one arm for moving the gate between a closed and opened position. The pivoting arms are moved into or slightly past a dead center position when the gate is in the closed position whereby the impact of a vehicle engaging the gate will be transmitted to the support instead of to the piston and cylinder assembly. When the gate is closed, the dead center position of the arm maintains the stop gate in a locked position. The stop gate may be sized and shaped to entirely block the conduit to provide a dead end air cushion stop assist.

  • Patent number: 4106647
Abstract: A method of disposing a bar of rectangular cross-section includes firstly placing the bar on a first substantially cylindrical surface which is connected to a second cylindrical surface along a common generatrix. Two tangential planes along the generatrix form a dihedral angle, preferably 145.degree.. The first surface is then tilted to cause the bar to slide toward the common generatrix until it abuts against the apex of the dihedral angle. The tilt is increased until the bar either slides or tips onto the second surface. Thereafter, the bar, which rests on the second surface on one of its wider sides, is collected. An apparatus for carrying out the method includes at least two substantially cylindrical surfaces connected along a common generatrix. Two tangential planes along the generatrix form a dihedral angle, preferably 145.degree.. The cylindrical surfaces are formed on the edges of at least two rotatable members of cruciform shape.

  • Patent number: 4103794
Abstract: A wheel mounted chassis is provided with a pair of spaced and parallel conveyor chains extending longitudinally from the front to the rear of the chassis. A pair of cylindrical bale, pick-up arms are pivoted forwardly of the chassis and are adapted to be engaged with each end of a bale to be picked up. Fluid operator means pivot the arms and the bale through an arc and deposit the bale onto the conveyor chains. The arms then return to the forward position to pick up the next bale. As the arms move rearwardly through an arc, means are operatively connected to the conveyor chains to move the upper runs thereof rearwardly a predetermined amount and stop clutch or ratchet means prevent forward movement of the upper runs of the conveyor chains when the arms move forwardly. The first bale is thus moved rearwardly as the next bale is picked up and deposited and this continues until the chassis is full or enough bales are loaded thereon.

  • Patent number: 4103873
Abstract: The disclosure relates to an overload protection apparatus for hoisting machines such as rope hoists or chain blocks. One gear incorporated in the reduction gear train of the hoisting machine is composed of an outer and an inner gear units between which torque is transmitted through resilient means acting therebetween. The resilient means are adapted to be compressed, upon receipt of an excessively large torque, i.e. in case of an overload, to allow a relative movement in the direction of rotation between the outer and the inner gear units. The relative movements of the gear units in the direction of rotation is then converted into a movement in the direction of thrust. Detecting switch is provided for opening an electric circuit for lifting, upon detecting the movement in the direction of thrust, thereby to stop the lifting operation.
