    Abstract: An approach for providing telephony services over a data network is disclosed. A communication system includes a gateway that receives a signal to establish a call with a called station from a calling station in a telephone network (such as a Class 3 network) associated with one of a plurality of customers. The gateway generates a message according to a prescribed application layer protocol to establish the call with the called station over the data network. The message includes an alias host address identifying the one customer. The system also includes a server that receives the message from the gateway and to route the call to the called station based upon the alias host address.

Particularly, the system is free from conversion losses when converting the variable-length packets to fixed-length packets and thereby minimizes a frequency band required of the packet switch without regard to the packet size.

    Abstract: A system for implementing a base band compression scheme for a nonlinear multiplying up-converter for QPSK and OQPSK includes a bit combining module, a quadrant remap module, a look-up table (LUT) and a zoom adjust module. The bit combining module is configured to generate an address based on a number of symbols received as input data. Using the address provided by the bit combining module, the quadrant remap module remaps symbols from quadrants “2”, “3” and “4” to quadrant “1” and generates signals to look up corresponding output data from the LUT. The zoom adjust module generates a number of solutions corresponding to the input data using the corresponding output data retrieved from the LUT. The zoom adjust module is then used to select the best output from the solutions to provide a smooth output signal that does not have any discontinuities.

To improve phase error estimation performance and optimize the number of pilot carriers allocated to each sub-channel, an OFDMA transmitter changes the number of pilot carriers for a sub-channel according to the status of the sub-channel. Consequently, less pilot carriers are allocated to a sub-channel in a good state, reducing power consumption and more pilot carriers are allocated to a sub-channel in a bad state, improving channel estimation performance despite increased power consumption.

The proxy modem demodulates the modulated transmissions (208), organizes the resulting digital signal into a packet (210) and forwards the packet over a packet network (104, 106). Another proxy modem (200) that connects to the packet network and to a telephony network (110) receives the packets from the packet network. The packets are re-organized into a digital signal that is then modulated and forwarded over the telephony network to a destination. Use of the proxy modems in the network prevents unnecessary digitizing of modulated transmissions, which slows transmission and introduces errors.

An inter-cell contention-free period value is assigned to a first access point station in the first cell, associated with an accessing order in the medium for member stations in the first and second cells. The access point transmits a beacon packet containing the inter-cell contention-free period value, which is intercepted at the overlapped station. The overlapped station forwards the inter-cell contention-free period value to member stations in the second cell. A second access point in the second cell can then delay transmissions by member stations in the second cell until after the inter-cell contention-free period expires.
