Patent number: 7929509Abstract: A method and apparatus for reduced acquisition time are disclosed. In one embodiment, such as in a W-CDMA system, a receiver receives one or more signals from remote stations, each signal comprising a scrambling code associated with one of a plurality of code groups, each code group identified by a unique series of a synchronization codes. A searcher identifies a subset of first synchronization codes, and a processor selects one or more hypotheses in response to the received subset. The searcher may then perform searching for a scrambling code in accordance with the one or more hypotheses. The scrambling code search may be performed in parallel with continued synchronization code searching. Various other embodiments are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 2005Date of Patent: April 19, 2011Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventor: Inyup Kang

Patent number: 7912490Abstract: A method of improved performance through channel quality prediction for communications systems employing link adaption techniques includes a receiver which makes selective measurements on downlink transmissions, and then stores one or more of the measurements or a channel quality indicator derived therefrom. The receiver then retrieves one or more of the past measurements (or the past channel quality estimates themselves), and combines it with current measurements (or the current channel quality estimate), to predict what the channel quality will be at some future time and derive a predictive channel quality indicator (CQI). This predictive CQI, derived from both current channel measurements and at least one past channel measurement, is then sent to the transmitter for use in updating transmission parameters.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2003Date of Patent: March 22, 2011Assignee: InterDigital Technology CorporationInventor: Philip J. Patent number: 7890118Abstract: In a position detection system utilizing a WLAN supporting multiple data transfer rates, it is possible to reduce the number of required installed base stations, so system construction costs can be lowered. In a wireless station, a transmitted signal is judged at the time of transmission, and in case it is normal user data, the signal is transmitted by setting optimal transmission parameters for which a high communication throughput with wireless communication is obtained, and in case it is a position detection signal, the aforementioned signal is transmitted by setting transmission parameters for which the service range is increased. As a transmission parameter for which the service range is increased, a low data transfer rate or a long preamble length is used.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2005Date of Patent: February 15, 2011Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Takaki Uta, Atsushi Ogino, Ryota Yamasaki, Kumiko Takikawa

Patent number: 7835759Abstract: Instant messaging clients transmit, to a server, presence information indicating that the respective client is in a communicative state in which the client is receptive to communicating with the other clients. A server determines, for each client, that the respective client is in a communicative state if presence information was received from the client over a preceding predetermined time period, and that the client is in an unknown state if presence information was not received from the client over the preceding predetermined time period. The communicative state and the unknown state are possible presence states of the clients. The server transmits a notification to a second client of the presence state of a first client when both the first client and the second client are in a communicative state. But the server refrains from transmitting the notification to the second client when the first client is in the unknown state.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2008Date of Patent: November 16, 2010Assignee: Research In Motion LimitedInventors: Matthew Bells, David M.
