  • Patent number: 4790211
Abstract: A power transmission device for a full-time four wheel drive vehicle has a differential motion limiting device composed of a hydraulic frictional clutch such as a wet multiple disc type clutch. The friction clutch is disposed between a diff-carrier constituting a front wheel differential gear and a ring gear mount casing covering the diff-carrier and arranged coaxially with the diff-carrier. The ring gear mount casing is associated with the diff-carrier in a center differential gear, and the diff-carrier of the front wheel differential gear is associated with the left hand side gear in the center differential gear. Thus, when the friction clutch is engaged, the ring gear mount casing and the diff-carrier of the front wheel differential gear are integrally coupled with each other so that the rotation of the ring gear is transmitted directly to the front wheel differential gear, while the two elements in the center differential gear are integrally coupled with each other to lock the center differential gear.

  • Patent number: 4788887
Abstract: A gearbox comprises parallel primary or input and secondary or output shafts in a casing. An output gear train of two constant-mesh gearwheels is fastened to the secondary shaft. An independent input gear train of four constant-mesh gearwheels and a first and a second clutch are mounted on the primary shaft. A third clutch is mounted on the secondary shaft. The first and third clutches respectively couple the input train to the primary shaft and to the secondary shaft. A three-element planetary gearset concentric with the primary shaft comprises a sun gear fastened to the input train, a planet carrier coupled to the primary shaft by the second clutch and a ring gear fastened to the output train. Thus the gearbox features three gear ratios by respective combinations of pairs of the three clutches. This arrangement constitutes a basic gearbox.

  • Patent number: 4779486
Abstract: The differential gear momentum compensated actuator is a mechanism that maintains the rotational rate of a planetary carrier relative to a sun gear a constant negative multiple of the rotational rate of the pointed device relative to the sun gear enabling momentum compensation, but when the angular rate of the pointed device relative to its support bearing races is zero, large non linear friction torques act on the pointed device and prevent precision device pointing. The improved rate biased differential gear momentum compensated actuator is a mechanism for rotationally articulating the sun gear relative to the base vehicle at a biased angular rate while the pointed device independently tracks the target angular rate. The bias angular rate of the rotational reference sun gear results in each pointed device support ball bearing race having a different rotational rate thus preventing stiction friction torques from acting on the pointed device.

  • Patent number: 4779490
Abstract: A transmission diagnostic control effective when there is an apparent loss of the transmission output speed signal for determining if failure is real, and if so, the cause of the failure. When an apparent loss of the output signal is observed, the transmission is successively upshifted through its various forward speed ratios while the transmission input speed is monitored to detect the occurrence of an upshift-related reduction thereof. If the shifting fails to produce a reduction in the transmission input speed by the time the transmission has been shifted to the highest available speed ratio, a total transmission failure is indicated. If the shifting produces a decrease in the transmission input speed, a total failure of the transmission is ruled out, and the diagnostic control determines if the failure is transmission or sensor related.
