  • Patent number: 4172375
Abstract: Apparatus for guiding and coiling one or more metallic strands that are continuously advancing along their length from a casting apparatus. A coiling apparatus has an open-top coil-collecting basket with concentric, generally cylindrical inner and outer walls. A rotating cone is disposed over the inner wall. At least one boom and a set of opposed rolls and associated fairing assemblies mounted on the boom guide the strand from the casting apparatus to the coiling apparatus. An exit end of the boom directs each strand vertically downward onto the cone of one coiler. Friction between the strand and the cone lays the strand in the basket in horizontal wraps without a reversal of the laying direction or kinks. The boom exit end mounts a straightener that includes a pair of hydraulically-actuated slide bars that are orthogonal to each other and to the strand. The slide bars produce a cyclic deflection of the strand about the center of the cone to form a uniform, non-tangled coil.

  • Patent number: 4169310
Abstract: An improved tool for wrapping wire around an electrical terminal to make an electrical connection. The tool includes a bit and a sleeve for receiving the bit. One end of the bit has a connecting member for coupling the bit to the chuck of a hand-held drive motor. The opposite end of the bit is provided with a tip having a recess axially aligned with an axially extending groove formed in one side of the main body of the bit. A discontinuity between the recess and the groove is defined by a ridge having a pair of relatively convergent edges which extend toward the axis of the bit and terminate at a notch axially aligned with the bottom of the groove in the bit body. A crescent shaped projection extends axially outwardly from one side of the tip to wrap the end of the wire against the terminal at the end of a wire wrapping tool.

  • Patent number: 4160371
Abstract: A method for winding a spiral coil involving the steps of winding a metal band on a mandrel while in advance of the mandrel continuously forming a succession of regularly-spaced deformations in the band edges which protrude alternately from the opposite band surfaces to space the coil turns. During the winding, and for each successive turn, the sequence of deformations is shifted along the band, in one direction or the opposite, by a predetermined dimension such that oppositely-protruding deformations on adjacent turns come into tangential locking engagement with each other at the start of every succeeding turn and all projections on each turn come into such locking engagement. Apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4152914
Abstract: A method according to the present invention comprises the formation of metallic materials by translating metal wire between working tools, that is, a striker and an anvil, which are arranged in a closed space with a medium inert to both the wire metal and material of the tools. The wire is then heated to a temperature high enough for plastic deformation of the metal, while ultrasonic vibrations are simultaneously applied to the working tools, propagating at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the wire. An apparatus for carrying out the proposed method comprises, in addition to the working tools, sources of ultrasonic vibrations which are rigidly coupled to the tools, and a mechanism for heating the working tools and wire.
