  • Patent number: 4112727
Abstract: Apparatus for making flanges for large diameter pipe from bar stock of the type having a generally rectangular cross-section includes a substantially flat work surface for supporting the bar stock, a rotatable die position adjacent to the work surface and a drive shaft coupled to a motor for rotation of the die. A bonnet surrounds the die for applying pressure against the bar stock in directions toward the work surface, the bonnet being rotatable with the die and the drive shaft. One end of the bar stock is pinned to the peripheral edge of the bonnet such that the bar stock is bent about one short side thereof and wrapped around the die. The wrapped bar stock, in the form of a helical coil, is severed along a line substantially normal to the long sides thereof to form a plurality of C-shaped members, and the ends of the C-shaped members are joined into an endless loop so as to form the desired flange.

  • Patent number: 4112728
Abstract: The device bends pipes into a serpentine pipe bank having right-hand and left-hand bends, with the pipe being held, during the bending operation, in a bending rail and the pipe end to be bent being clamped in a bending form. The bending rail and the bending form are mounted in a cylindrical frame which is rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the pipe to be bent. After each formation of two 90.degree. bends, or one 180.degree. bend, the frame is rotated through 180.degree. with the pipe remaining stationary and with the bending rail and bending form completely disengaged from the pipe. The bending rail is adjustable in the frame to fixed positions in accordance with the diameter of the pipe to be bent, and the bending form, together with clamping jaws associated therewith, is pivotally mounted in the frame for swinging about an axis perpendicular to the axis of the pipe.

  • Patent number: 4110858
Abstract: A heavy duty press mechanism, whose ram is driven by means of an eccentric crank and pitman, carries a head with four aligned indention punches for distorting thread pitch simultaneously on four axially aligned hex nuts. A feed track system feeds a row of axially aligned hex nuts under the punch head. A reciprocating ejector-stop, synchronized with the punch ram, simultaneously ejects a group of four indented nuts and defines a stop for the following group of nuts at the indention station. A feed system includes an axial feed track for feeding nuts to the indention station, a lateral feed track, and a transfer speed coupler coupling these tracks. A vibrating hopper feeds laterally aligned nuts into the lateral feed track, where a single row of side-by-side nuts is fed by gravity to the speed coupler. The speed coupler effects a transfer from lateral feed to axial feed into the axial feed track.

  • Patent number: 4102169
Abstract: The invention provides an improved method and apparatus for pipe bending. In the method a leading portion of a length of pipe is heated and bent around a mandrel into a pipe bend, whereafter it is hot calibrated or sized to finished dimensions and at the same time cut off and trimmed to size at both ends. In a machine for carrying out the method, there are a heating chamber and an interchangeable bending mandrel. At the end of the bending mandrel there is a horizontally functioning calibrating or sizing device. A severing device is both in front of and behind the calibrating device for cutting off and trimming the pipe bend, and the pipe bend is movable both longitudinally and/or transversely in the horizontal plane.

  • Patent number: 4102170
Abstract: A method for winding a spiral coil involving the steps of winding a metal band on a mandrel in advance of the mandrel continuously forming a succession of regularly-spaced deformations in the band edges which protrude alternately from the opposite band surfaces to space the coil turns. During the winding, and for each successive turn, the sequence of deformations is shifted along the band, in one direction or the opposite, by a predetermined dimension such that oppositely-protruding deformation on adjacent turns come into tangential locking engagement with each other at the start of every succeeding turn and all projections on each turn come into such locking engagement. Apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4100638
Abstract: A machine for forging the leading end of a metal screw blank comprising two pairs of complementary dies, one die of each pair of which is stationary and the other movable to and from the stationary die. The stationary dies are supported on opposite sides of a stationary die support and the movable dies on discrete movable die supports at opposite sides of the stationary die support. The movable die supports are connected to form a movable die assembly, are supported by linear ball bearings on cylindrical ways and are reciprocated as a unit by a pitman connected to a crankshaft by roller bearings, thus providing for the production of a forged blank upon each 180.degree. rotation of the crankshaft. The movable die supports are adjustable relative to the stationary die support and the roller bearings have preload adjustments that make it possible to maintain a precise clearance between the respective dies of each pair in their closed position within one hundred twenty seven thousandths of a millimeter (0.

  • Patent number: 4099399
Abstract: Hot-formed rod is prepared in a rolling mill by removing oxide from the surface of a nascent cast bar while the bar is in a non-oxidizing environment. Oxide is removed from the surface of the bar by means such as wire brushing, for example, with the oxide removing means and the nascent bar being enclosed in a non-oxidizing or reducing environment to improve the removal of existing oxide and to inhibit formation of new oxide on the bar while the bar travels from the oxide-removing means to the rolling mill to be hot-formed. Removal of oxide while the bar is in a non-oxidizing environment enhances the removal of oxide and lessens the unwanted removal of metal underlying the surface oxide.
