  • Patent number: 4696175
Abstract: An improved clutch apparatus for a spring forming machine is disclosed having two independently-operating, one-way clutches (i.e., one left hand and one right hand clutch) which commonly drive a pair of wire feed rollers through connecting gears such that 360.degree. of machine use is provided. That is, while one clutch is operating to feed wire, the other clutch is in a return mode such that both clutches constantly reciprocate in a sequential manner thereby permitting continuous wire feeding and forming. Due to the common gear connection, the associated dual feed rollers are operated by whichever clutch is in the drive mode at a given time.

  • Patent number: 4691549
Abstract: A substantial amount of liquid lubricant used in a cold strip rolling mill is prevented from passing between the area of the work roll necks and work roll bodies not in contact with a strip by locating in a strip guiding means on the entry side adjacent both edges of the strip, several zoned air nozzles which delivery a positive pressure to force the liquid away from this area, in a direction toward the center of the strip and rolls, and which nozzles are controlled according to the width of strip being rolled. The relatively small amount of liquid finding its way onto the delivery side is removed from the strip by providing in the strip guiding means both positive and negative air pressure means located above and below the strip, and negatively pressurized longitudinal enclosures located adjacent both edges of the strip and the said area.

  • Patent number: 4689981
Abstract: Apparatus for draw-bending metal tubes and other elongated workpieces of hollow section, in which a mandrel, supported on a bar within the tube, bears against the inner wall of the tube in the region of the bend and helps to prevent the tube section from collapsing or distorting. Vibration transducers are attached to the bar to set up a standing wave of resonant vibration within the mandrel and bar which has the effect of reducing friction between the mandrel and the tube. A special coupling device may be used to attach the transducers to the bar and may also serve to connect the bar to the fixed structure of the apparatus, and the invention includes the complete apparatus when tuned so as to generate a displacement antinode of vibration at the mandrel tip, a displacement node at the point of attachment of the coupling device to the structure, and generally so as to minimize waste of the vibratory energy.

  • Patent number: 4686752
Abstract: A slotted retaining plate for use in a tubular reactor within an analytical system. The reactor contains inert packed material which provides for the necessary flow path length for a fluid stream entering the reactor. The retaining plate is extremely thin and has an array of slots which permit the necessary flow of the stream through the reactor, but retain the packing material within the reactor. The design of the slot array in the retaining plates essentially eliminates any possible impediment to the stream flow. The slots are adjustable to provide more flexibility in slot size control to allow use of smaller packing particles within the reactor and improve the instrument resolution in, for example, an amino acid analyzer.

  • Patent number: 4685754
Abstract: An electrical receptacle (11) for tabs of small size is formed from sheet metal and comprises a generally channel-shaped receptacle portion (12) having a base (13) and upstanding side walls (14, 14'). Free edge portions (15, 15') of the side walls are bent towards each other over the base and a locking tongue (16) is struck out from the base to extend rearwardly within the receptacle portion from a front root end (18) integral with the base to a rear free end. The free end is formed with a release member (19) projecting out of the receptacle portion and a locking projection (21) on the tongue between the ends which provides a rearwardly facing shoulder for latching engagement in a recess in a tab (22) inserted into the receptacle. The tongue (16) is of arcuate transverse cross section and is stiff constituting, with a portion of the base forward of the root end a torsion bar of generally T-shape. Movement of the tongue towards the base to release the tab causes resilient torsional flexure of the base portion.

  • Patent number: 4683742
Abstract: To forge billets, the billets are fed end-to-end along a path which leads to a coating tank containing a lubricant and then through a heating station to a forging station. Within the coating tank, the line of billets is made to undergo a change of direction for example by passing over a hump in the feed path, such that an angular separation is created between adjacent end faces of successive billets. In this way, a better coating of the end faces of the billets is achieved.

  • Patent number: 4682486
Abstract: The soft magnetic properties of amorphous alloy toroids is improved by turning under tension an amorphous alloy ribbon onto itself to form a winding having a preselected number of turns such that the radially acting compressive stress is minimized. In one embodiment, the radially acting compressive stress is locally minimized by using such a toroid pole-piece geometry that the windings have as little an area of curvature as is possible. In another embodiment, the radially acting compressive stress is globally minimized by turning the ribbon onto itself such that successive turns of the winding are wrapped with progressively less tension.
