  • Patent number: 4757700
Abstract: Process and apparatus for making a flexible tube comprising a plurality of helicoidal metal members in side-by-side relation. In the process, metal strips, shaped to the desired configuration, are twisted around their longitudinal axes to helicoidal shape, the twisting being sufficient to cause the shape to be retained if the strip is released. Thereafter, the so-shaped strip is bent around an axis extending in the width direction of the strip by an amount sufficient to cause the strip to have a radius substantially equal to the tube radius. The strips are then laid up, side-by-side into a tube. The apparatus comprises a rotatable cage carrying bobbins having the strips thereon, two pairs of preshaping rollers to produce the twist and the bend mounted for rotation with the cage, a mold for laying up the helicoidal strips, a guide element for the strips intermediate the rollers and the mold and a take-up bobbin or drum for winding up the tube as it leaves the mold.

  • Patent number: 4748707
Abstract: Elongated straight cylindrical metal rods are threaded along opposite end portions, and the cylindrical outer surface of the center portion of each rod is marked to form a visual indicator of the longitudinal center of the rod. The straight rods are successively inserted into a rod bending machine having a mandrel with a mark indicating the center plane of the bending operation. The mid-point mark on each rod is aligned with the center plane mark on the machine, and the rod is bent to form a precision U-bolt. Preferably, the mark identifying the center of each rod extends circumferentially around the metal rod and is formed by a stripe of color contrasting ink to provide a permanent mark which does not require rotating the rod to find the mark.

  • Patent number: 4747283
Abstract: A tube bender has multiple rotatable bend dies of differing radii and a pressure die engaging the outer surface of the trailing portion of the tube tangential to the bend. A drive for the pressure die is provided to move the pressure die parallel to the tangential tube portion during bending. The drive includes sensors for determining both the drive speed of the pressure die and the rotation rate of the bend die, a computer which converts the detected rotation rate into a center line speed for the tube, and a servomechanism which controls the drive structure so as to drive the pressure die at a speed which has a selected ratio to the tube center line speed.

  • Patent number: 4744838
Abstract: A plurality of separate blanks or punchings can be continually processed by first cutting the strips into the dimensions needed for core punchings prior to thermal and magnetic annealing. Thereafter the cut punchings can be fed into the annealing line a conveyor in the sequence of one after another in series, alternatively side-by-side in parallel. The punchings will be flattened with rollers or a press during the stage of heating from room temperature to approximately 300.degree. C. The molten metals adhering to the laser-cut edges or burrs from the mechanical shear can be mechanically removed at this point by brushing. The strips may then be thermally and magnetically annealed in the soaking area. In one embodiment, the temperature may be 400.degree. C. .+-.20.degree. C. for 2605-S2 Metglas material and 360.degree. C. .+-.10.degree. C. for 2605S-C Metglas material with a field of 10 Oe in a non-oxidizing environment.

  • Patent number: 4741193
Abstract: A roll cooling device for a rolling mill having rolls comprises cooling water guide plates each having a curved surface along a circumferential direction of rolls, the cooling water guide plates being provided close to the rolls, cooling water supply headers for supplying cooling water to cooling water passages defined by the cooling water guide plate and the rolls, water discharge headers for discharging the cooling water, supplied by the water supply headers, from the cooling water passages, support members supporting the cooling water guide plates, and curvature adjusting members for changing curvature of the guide plates in accordance with a diameter of the rolls. A thickness of the guide plate is increased from each edge portion to a central portion of the guide plate in the circumferential direction of the roll. In the case where the roll diameter is largely changed, the clearance between the guide plate and the roll is kept suitably, thereby sufficiently cool the rolls.

  • Patent number: 4739640
Abstract: Apparatus for use in cooling and/or drying or cleaning elongate material, such as drawn wire, tube or strip material, the apparatus comprising a chamber, which may be formed at least in part by a flexible tube, having an inlet and an outlet through which the material enters and leaves the chamber, and the chamber is connected via an outlet passage to a device which creates a sub-atmospheric pressure within the chamber. The sub-atmospheric pressure lowers the evaporation temperature of the cooling liquid which is on the surface of the material which evaporates and cools the material and the sub-atmospheric pressure causes air to flow into the chamber around the material in the region of the outlet and this airflow is at high velocity and wipes the material. The apparatus is preferably located on the end of a structure in which a drawing die is housed.

  • Patent number: 4736605
Abstract: The device serves to control the desired lifting and pressure-containing movements of strip pressure rolls for the reels which serve to store hot rolled strip. These reels have a rotating mandrel. The pressure rolls are actuated by piston and cylinder units for positioning the rolls electro-hydraulically in conformity with signals which indicate the relative position of the leading strip edge which rotates with the mandrel. The positioning of the roll, by the lifting and pressure-contacting movements, is effectd by position control with subordinated pressure control in a closed-circuit position control loop and a closed-circuit pressure control loop, by input of a setpoint position value which corresponds to the respectively prevailing pressure-contacting and lifting position of the pressure rolls, and by establishment of limited setpoint pressure values for both functions or directions of movement.
