    Abstract: A method of producing a flanged bush comprising the steps of: preparing a die having a through bore of a configuration conforming with the outer configuration of the flanged bush to be produced, and a flange-forming punch having a large-diameter portion of a diameter equal to the outside diameter of the flanged bush and a small-diameter portion of a diameter equal to the inside diameter of the bore in the flanged bush to be produced; inserting, by a coining punch, a cylindrical stock axially into the bore in the die from one axial end of the latter; and driving the flange-forming punch into the bore in the die from the other axial end of the latter so as to press the inner end of the stock, thereby to form the flange.

    Abstract: An apparatus for effecting a thickness-reduction rolling of a hot thin plate ingot provided with a continuous casting machine and a rolling mill has a widthwise rolling mill disposed between the continuous casting machine and the rolling mill for performing a width-reduction rolling of a thin plate ingot, and a bending device disposed between the widthwise rolling mill and the rolling mill for performing a bending work on the ingot in the longitudinal direction. The widthwise rolling mill applies a widthwise compressive strain to scale formed on the surface of the hot thin plate ingot and the bending device applies strain in the longitudinal direction thereof to thereby form intersecting cracks for fining the scale formed on the surface of the thin plate ingot. The scale is thereafter easily exfoliated by a relatively low pressure water descaling device without excessively lowering the temperature of the ingot.

    Abstract: Rolling mill work and back-up rolls comprising an arbor with a sleeve shrunk thereon have circumferential grooves formed in the external surface of the arbor, through which heating or cooling liquid is supplied from external sources so as to expand or contract the sleeve and change the roll crown and contour. The fins, or material between grooves, may have higher heat conductivity than the material of the arbor and sleeve, and are proportioned to transmit rolling forces without reducing roll stiffness. A liquid supply system provides liquids of different temperatures to selected sections of the grooves along the roll working surface; and strip of different widths but of uniform gauge across the strip is rolled by suitably adjusting the temperatures of the hot and cold liquids so supplied.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for open-die forging of workpieces in forging presses at high forging temperatures, more particularly steel billets or ferrous alloy billets between about 800 and 1250 degrees Celsius. In conventional open-die forging it is often not possible to complete the forging process in a single heat, and the workpiece must therefore be reheated. Also, with direct contact between workpiece and tool, cracks occur, particularly in the vicinity of bulges, the prevention or straightening of which requires repeated transverse hammer- or pressure-forging, so lengthening the cooling time. The total energy consumption for deformation and heating of the workpieces is therefore relatively high.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for hydraulically forming metallic tubular bodies are disclosed. A forming die is provided, with the interior of the die configured to receive the tubular body to be shaped. The tubular body is filled with liquid, preferably water, with the interior of the tubular body then sealed. A forming plunger is thereafter inserted into the tubular body whereby localized hydraulic pressurization of the liquid within the body is effected. Outward deformation of the body toward the interior of the forming die thus results, with the formation of tapers, steps, projections, or other desired features readily achieved. The present invention is particularly suited for forming the tubular components of musical instruments.

    Abstract: A method of water cooling a hot-rolled steel plate is disclosed. In this method, while a hot-rolled steel plate is being advanced lengthwise, a plurality of nozzles spray cooling water to the steel plate, and thus the plate is cooled to a predetermined temperature at a predetermined cooling rate. Before, while and after the plurality of nozzles carry out water-cooling, temperatures are consistently measured at predetermined temperature measurement points in cross-sectional areas of temperature measurement positions which are arranged lengthwise at predetermined locations of the steel plate. Each time such measurement is performed, degree of deformation of the plate is calculated on the basis of temperature differences between the temperature measurement points. When the calculated degree of deformation is not within an allowable range, corrections are made on the distribution of the water supplied by the plurality of nozzles.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a die device for forming tube from a metal band, wherein the die comprises a long die block comprising, lengthwise and passing through it, a conduit comprising an inlet orifice of larger cross section and an outlet orifice of smaller cross section. The conduit converges from the inlet orifice towards the outlet orifice. At the level of the inlet orifice, the conduit is of a width slightly greater than that of said metal band. As the planar metal band passes through the conduit, it is formed by the interior surface, or generatrices, of the conduit into a tube of the desired configuration. Means are provided for creating tubes of differing cross-sectional shapes, such as a square, or a circular configuration. The die block is removably mounted on a carriage, which carriage is movable horizontally in front of a horizontal mandrel driven in rotation. The tube created by passage through the die block is wound around the mandrel.

    Abstract: A closed die forging machine is disclosed in which the dies are clamped in their closed position by a hydraulically operated piston and cylinder means. A spacer is positioned between the clamping means and the movable die during the forging operation. Subsequent to the forging operation, the clamping means are released and the spacer is removed so that the movable die can be mechanically moved to its fully open position. By combining a removable spacer and hydraulic clamping means, it is possible to produce high die clamping forces without requiring substantial fluid flow to and from the clamping means. Therefore, pumping requirements are reduced and the tendency of the hydraulic fluid to become excessively hot is substantially reduced. Immediately after the completion of the forming operation within the closed die cavity, the hydraulic forces are released and a spring-powered system controlled by a cam-operated operator causes partial ejection of the finished workpiece from the stationary die.
