Abstract: Generally, the present invention provides stations for one or more portable electronic devices (PEDs) and methods for such stations. A station can support a PED, and sense when the PED would be notifying its user about a wireless signal that is received from a remote transmitter. When the station so senses, it further generates a human-perceptible indication to help notify the user, who might have walked away. The human-perceptible indication can include, a call sound, a light signal, etc. This way, for example, when the PED is only vibrating, the call sound can be such that the station rings like a regular home telephone, and/or the light signal can be such that the station lights up without distracting coworkers as much. As such, the user can always keep the PED at the “Silent” annunciation mode.
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for preventing unauthorized users from gaining access to a wireless network. A processor allows only data transmissions from the directions of the authorized users to access the network. Data transmissions from other directions are not allowed to access the network. The present invention also relates to a method and apparatus fore transmitting information only in selected directions, while in directions not selected, information cannot be inferred from the transmitted signal or signals.
Abstract: Techniques for allowing a home agent to provide location/presence-based services are provided. In one embodiment, a point of attachment of an access network receives a discovery request from a mobile node. A mobile node is associated with a home agent in a home network different from the access network. Location/presence-based information is determined at the point of attachment. The location/presence-based information is added to a registration request at the layer 3 protocol layer. The registration request is then sent from the point of attachment to the home agent. When the registration request is received at the home agent, the home agent parses the registration request to determine the location/presence information from the request. The home agent then performs a location/presence service using the location/presence information.

Abstract: An antenna diversity receiver has a low-IF receiving mode and a diversity selection mode, and a switch arrangement for coupling one of the antennas to the IF channels when in the receiving mode, and coupling each of the channels to a different one of the antennas in the selection mode. A diversity controller compares qualities of signals received simultaneously from the different antennas during the selection mode, and controls the switch arrangement in the receiving mode, to use the better antenna. The quality measurement is carried out during reception of a carrier before a preamble to a desired signal is received, so that there is more time to obtain a better signal quality measurement and to enable better averaging over time. The channels have a polyphase filter with switchable cross coupling between the channels, so that it acts as two independent low pass filters in the selection mode.
Abstract: Specific information that can be stored in a mobile terminal device, changes over time, cannot be altered when a lock operation is requested, and can be acquired by an owner, such as a last-dialed telephone number, is managed as owner-specific authentication information, and, when an e-mail requesting a lock operation is extracted, a lock number for authentication for locking the mobile terminal device is calculated by using the owner-specific authentication information as a parameter.

Pulling the top member will slide the intermediate member away from the bottom member by moving the outer slide members on the inner slide members by expanding the elastic assembly. Releasing the top member will elastically return the intermediate member to its original position.
Abstract: In a disclosed embodiment, a mobile unit includes a codec, a vocoder, and an audio decoder. The vocoder and the audio decoder provide respective outputs to an audio mux. A stereo/mono control unit receives an audio mux input from the audio mux. A control output generated by the stereo/mono control unit is coupled to a number of components in a receive audio processing path of the codec. By disabling at least one of the components in, for example, the right channel of the receive audio processing path of the codec, the control output of the stereo/mono control unit results in significant power savings. Such disabling can occur, for example, when the audio mux input received by the stereo/mono control unit contains voice signals, as opposed to music signals.

Abstract: A wireless communications network (120) responds to each incoming call placed to a wireless communications device (134) by transmitting a call-paging message (418) within a corresponding partition of a digital radio frame of prescribed format. Responsive to each occurrence of a broadcast event (404), the network transmits (414) a repeating broadcast-paging message announcing the availability of broadcast content from the network. The broadcast-paging message is transmitted multiple times within each digital radio frame. Another sequence (500) describes WCD operation in this network. Responsive to wakeup (502) from sleep, the WCD detects (509) received signal quality. The WCD also receives (510) scheduled network transmission of a call-paging message and a number of instances (at least one) of a repeating network transmitted broadcast-paging message that occurs multiple times for each scheduled transmission of the call-paging message. This number varies inversely with the detected signal quality.
Abstract: A power saving process for wireless communications is provided, wherein a receiving station examines the header of each incoming frame and stops decoding data symbols of the frame, upon determining that the incoming frame is not intended for that receiving station. In one implementation, the receiving station stops receiving and decoding data symbols of the frame by entering a power saving mode. This conserves power at the receiving station.
