  • Patent number: 5033237
Abstract: A method of numerically controlled grinding for forming a curved profile on a workpiece. A rotary grindstone having an arc-shaped grinding periphery. The rotating grindstone is moved along the target profile of the workpiece as keeping a constant attitude thereof as far as such a condition is satisfied that the spotty contact of the arc-shaped periphery of the grindstone to the target profile is maintained. Immediately before the satisfaction of the condition expires, the attitude of the grindstone is reset to satisfy the same condition.

  • Patent number: 5032049
Abstract: The invention relates to an indexable cutting insert for face milling of engine blocks of cast iron. The insert has a free surface and a clearance surface and a cutting edge extending peripherally about the insert. The corners of the insert have a relatively large radius and therefore the setting angle gets close to zero degrees during machining of the engine block when the insert gets close to the border line of the work piece. The free surface and the clearance surface enclose an acute angle and therefore the insert has a positive cutting geometry. A land is provided between the free surface and the cutting edge. The land has a width increasing towards each insert corner.

  • Patent number: 5032050
Abstract: An improved on-edge cutting insert with chip control features and a method for manufacturing the same. An insert body having peripheral end wall regions, sides and first and second walls has cutting edges and is adapted for mounting in a pocket of a toolholder assembly. A land region extends rearwardly from the end wall region and defines a surface region of a predetermined width. A descending wall initiates in a portion of the land and terminates in a planar floor region having a forward, a rearward and opposed side edges. A back ramp extends upwardly from the planar floor rearward edge and terminates at the respective top or bottom wall. The end wall region can include at least one flat land region adjacent the land region. The flat land region defines a selectively removable portion of the end wall region and after my selective removal thereof represents no more than approximately one-third of the total eidth of the end wall region.

  • Patent number: 5030190
Abstract: A disposable or reusable and reclosable gussetted plastic bag capable of being compactly stored as a food container in freezers, yet capable of standing with an upright spout in a microwave oven for non-spill thawing and cooking of food contained in the bag. The bag is formed of two wing-shaped pouches on either side of the upright spout. The bag preferably has inner and outer skin layers of different heat sealing temperatures so that peripheral sealing is effected only with the inner skin layers, allowing the wing-shaped pouches to be formed out of a gussetted bottom without sealing of the outer skin layers of the gusset walls facing one another. Two pairs of relief seals are located adjacent each gusset joint at both edges of the bag. Each seal is positioned 45.degree. off the gusset joint and preferably has a radius shape. The heat seals are formed by applying heat adjacent each gusset joint with a hot bar or other heat sealing device following formation of the bag.

  • Patent number: 5029418
Abstract: A technique for sawing substrates on a chuck wherein the substrate is secured to a layer of a first sawing tape, and is placed on the major surface of a chuck with a second tape therebetween. The second tape comprises both a first major surface with a low surface tension effect that is in contact with the major surface of the chuck, and a multitude of perforations or pinholes therein. Vacuum is applied to both the channels in the major surface of the chuck and the pinholes in the second tape, to securely hole the substrate to the chuck during the sawing of the substrate. When the sawing is completed, the vacuum is removed and either atmospheric pressure or pressurized air is applied to the channels of the chuck, and the combination of the substrate, first sawing tape and second tape are easily removable because of the low surface tension effect of the first major surface of the second tape with the major surface of the chuck.

  • Patent number: 5030188
Abstract: In apparatus for forming cut lengths of tube by winding one or more strips of material into a continuously advancing spiral wound tube and periodically cutting off lengths of the tube, lengths of tube containing splices present in the strips are rejected at a rejection point downstream from the cut-off point by monitoring the strips for splices prior to winding, waiting until enough strip has passed the splice monitoring point to extend from the splice monitoring point to the rejection point, and rejecting the length of tube at the rejection point when that amount of strip has passed the splice monitoring point.

  • Patent number: 5029499
Abstract: In a remaining bar material machining method, a plurality of works are taken from a continuous bar material on an NC lathe, and the remaining portion left at the end of the bar material is machined effectively. In the lathe in which both first and second headstocks are axially movable along the bed, the continuous bar material can be continuously machined with efficiency. At that time, to utilize the remaining portion left at the end of the bar material effectively without discarding it, this remaining bar material is transferred to the second headstock. An NC controller includes a main machining program and a remaining bar material machining program; when the remaining bar material has been transferred to the second headstock, the remaining bar material machining program is executed instead of the main machining program having hitherto been executed. During machining the remaining bar material on the second headstock, the first headstock is waiting in readiness for the machining of the next bar material.
