  • Patent number: 4000522
Abstract: A front-opening shirt with attached, turn-down collar is adapted for wearing either closed-collar style as with a necktie, or in a casual, open-collar style in which no button, button hole, or other fastener is visible on the free ends of the neck band, thereby improving the appearance of the shirt for such casual wear. The collar is closed by means of a strap or tab which is mounted swivelably at one of its ends on a stud or button on the neck band hidden beneath the turned-down collar adjacent the shirt front, and connected by its other end to a similarly-hidden second button adjacent the other end of the neck band. The strap holds the overlapping ends of the neck band together and a necktie may be placed thereabout and tied at the front in a conventional manner.

  • Patent number: 4000540
Abstract: Two door pivot units are provided for causing radially outward or walking door motion when the door undergoes angular opening motion. In a first pivot unit, a cam follower is pushed with increasing force against a cam as the door opens by an adjustable biasing device. In a second unit, an arrowhead-shaped cam causes radially outward door movement similar to the motion caused by the first unit.

  • Patent number: 4000524
Abstract: A glove construction patterned to be conformal to the articulated movements of the human hand where a plurality of individual parts are designed and constructed to accommodate controlled extension and compression of the outer cover with respect to finger, thumb and metacarpal joints. The finger portions are provided with telescoping sections terminating at the lateral sides of the fingers on a neutral line of the finger joint called "the line of non-extension." The thumb back is comprised of three sections which form a natural thumb contour in the normal working attitude. The finger sections join the hand portion of the glove to provide a natural break line for the palm and metacarpal joints. An outer leather lining for a glove is provided with the inwardly facing surface of the lining having a water impermeable film bonded thereto.

  • Patent number: 3999220
Abstract: Helmets, shoulder pads, thigh pads and other protective equipment employ a cushioning fluid such as a layer of compressed air to protect both the wearer and an opposing player in contact sports. The helmet or other device has outer and inner walls of resilient material spaced apart to form an air chamber. A central plastic shield disposed between the resilient walls imparts shape and rigidity to the device and has multiple perforations to equalize the air pressure throughout the chamber when the walls flex under impact.

  • Patent number: 3999247
Abstract: A fitting for a vehicle seat having a tiltable backrest member includes one hinge member that is connectable to the backrest member and another hinge member that is connectable to the backrest member. A pivot arrangement connects the hinge members for relative pivoting movement, and an arresting arrangement is provided for arresting the hinge members in selected relative angular positions. The arresting arrangement includes a tubular boss on at least one of the hinge members and a pawl that is journalled on the boss for turning movement about the same. A screw or bolt extends through the boss and connects the hinge member to the associated seat member or backrest member.

  • Patent number: 3999259
Abstract: A clamp having two cooperating elements, one element carrying a pair of opposed stub shafts and the other element having a pair of channeled bearings receiving the shafts. A coiled tension spring engages a first stud mounted on the stub shaft carrying element and a second stud or other part on the handle of the bearing carrying element, whereby the spring is effective to (1) urge the jaws of the clamp toward their closed position, and (2) maintain the two elements in assembled relation.

  • Patent number: 3999245
Abstract: An improved counterbalance hinge assembly has a bias spring and uniquely shaped cam for counterbalancing inherently nonlinear forces represented by pivoting loads such as fold up wall type beds, desks, and the like. A cable attached to the spring wraps progressively around the cam surface as the bed or other load is pulled out from the wall, thereby compressing the spring. The effective radius of the cam at a given point is designed in conjunction with the peripheral extent of the cam surface up to that point, to give the desired counterbalancing force as a function of the angular position of the load. In the preferred embodiment, the effective radius is thus smaller with the bed in its horizontal position than with the bed in its vertical position. Additionally, a small offset angle may be provided in the counterbalancing mechanism near the vertical position, to aid in moving the load to and from its stored position.

  • Patent number: 3999246
Abstract: An improved two knuckle hinge comprises a pair of adjacent hinge leaves on which long and short axially aligned hinge knuckles are formed. The long hinge knuckle houses a bushing in its end adjacent the short hinge knuckle to act as an anti-friction bearing. A torsion spring may also be housed in the portion of the long hinge knuckle unoccupied by the bushing for urging the leaves together. A pintle, about which the long hinge knuckle pivots, is supported in the short hinge knuckle and extends into and cooperates with the torsion spring, when the torsion spring is present in the long knuckle. Also disclosed is a two knuckle hinge that simulates the appearance of a three or more knuckle hinge. This is accomplished through the use of one or more markings such as grooves in the long hinge knuckle which simulate the appearance of gaps between knuckles.

  • Patent number: 3997922
Abstract: A glove for cross-country skiing. The glove flexes as the skier clenches his fist to grasp his ski pole. The glove is neither stretched nor is the hand of the skier within the glove subjected to tension. The invention accomplishes this result by cuts extending transversely across the back of the glove but terminating short of the glove sides. Inserts of flexible covering material are seated within the cuts and secured to the glove back at the edges of the cuts. In the longitudinal direction of the glove, the inserts have a length which is greater than the width of the cuts within which the inserts are seated.
