  • Patent number: 11369516
Abstract: A laser delivery system is configured to delivery light energy to soften and realign the tissue of the eye in order to increase accommodation and treat glaucoma. The laser system can be configured to increase a circumlental space of the eye and increase movement of a posterior vitreous zonule in order to increase accommodation. The light energy may comprise wavelengths strongly absorbed by collagen of the sclera. In many embodiments a heat sink is provided to couple to the conjunctiva and the heat sink comprises a material transmissive to the light energy absorbed by collagen, for example Zinc Selenide. The heat sink can be chilled to inhibit damage to the conjunctiva of the eye. In many embodiments, one or more layers of the epithelium of the eye remain substantially intact above the zone where the eye has been treated when the heat sink has been removed.

  • Patent number: 11369398
Abstract: A tool has a handle and an elongate shaft that extends distally from the handle. A distal portion of the shaft is inserted into a subject during a surgical procedure. An optical fiber delivers laser energy to a tip at the distal portion of the shaft. The tip includes a mechanical cutting mechanism including a moving part that absorbs the laser energy, thermally conducts the absorbed energy to tissue that is disposed between the moving part and another part, and moves with respect to the other part in order to cut tissue that is disposed between the parts using a mechanical force that is lower than a mechanical force that would be required to cut the tissue in the absence of the laser energy. Other embodiments are also described.

  • Patent number: 11364387
Abstract: A heart rate (HR) monitor for use in a medical device configurable to measure a patient's ECG such as, for example, a WCD system. Embodiments can include an ECG sensor and a processor configured with classification criteria to classify a received ECG signal into one of a plurality of ECG rhythm types each with a corresponding algorithm to determine the patient's heart rate. The processor uses the classification criteria to identify the ECG signal's type and determine a heart rate of the patient using the corresponding algorithm. The HR monitor is configurable to avoid overcounting of erroneous measurements of R-R intervals that can result from large T-waves and/or bigeminy by comparing the mean of even R-R intervals with the mean of odd R-R intervals. If the means are significantly different double counting or bigeminy is indicated and the HR calculation is adjusted accordingly.

  • Patent number: 11337716
Abstract: A surgical instrument with improved end-effector gripping force. The instrument comprises a shaft, which may be inserted into a body of a patient. The articulated end-effector is mounted on the distal extremity of the instrument shaft and comprises a plurality of links interconnected by a plurality of joints, whose movements are remotely actuated by the surgeon's hands. This remote actuation is accomplished through mechanical transmission, mainly along flexible elements, which are able to deliver motion from a set of actuation elements, placed at a proximal extremity of the shaft, to the instrument's articulated end-effector. The articulated end-effector further comprises one or more cam-and-follower mechanisms that are able to amplify the force transmitted by the flexible elements so that the actuation force at the instrument jaws is maximized and the tension on the transmission elements minimized, thus increasing the fatigue resistance and life of the instrument.

  • Patent number: 11337659
Abstract: The invention relates to a determination system for determining a heart failure risk for a subject (4). The determination system (1) comprises a photoplethysmogram providing unit for providing a photoplethysmogram of the subject and a heart failure risk determination unit for determining the heart failure risk based on the provided photoplethysmogram. A photoplethysmogram can be provided in an unobtrusive way by using a photoplethysmogram sensor without requiring a physician's attendance. In particular, it is not necessarily required to measure electrocardiograms, to carry out blood tests and to perform a coronary angiography for determining the heart failure risk. The heart failure risk can therefore be determined in a technically relatively simple way without requiring a physician's attendance.
