The substrate processing apparatus for processing a display substrate includes a body which, in operation, rotates, a cylindrical grinding part connected to the body, and a lateral groove formed in a surface of the cylindrical grinding part. The lateral groove is configured to accommodate the display substrate. Thus, it is possible to form a hole by grinding an edge of the display substrate so as to be matched with a designed value.

The grinding process is performed so as to satisfy a specified machining condition “g/(5×p)<w<g/p”, where w is a rotational speed of the second member during grinding of the ball screw groove, g is a rotational speed of the grindstone during grinding of the ball screw groove, and p is a circumferential length of one circumference of the ball screw groove around the rotation axis.

The support member is positioned adjacent a contact region of an abrasive surface on an opposing front side of the flexible abrasive member against which a cutting edge is brought during a sharpening operation. In some cases, the support member is a stationary or moveable support member such as a pin or roller offset from the contact region. In other cases, the support member is a platen that projects forward to support the contact region.
