  • Patent number: 4813820
Abstract: A method and apparatus for in situ drilling of a precise hole in an erected structural element and inserting in such hole in pressed-fit relationship a cylindrical strain gauge. A guide block is provided having a precision hole corresponding to the diameter of the hole desired in the structural element. The guide block has unthreaded bolt holes for attachment of the guide block to the structural element and guides a reamer to produce a precise hole in the structural element. The guide block also has threaded holes for advancing a push plate against a force-transmitting bushing which is insertable through the precision hole in the guide block into abutting relationship with an end face of a cylindrical strain gauge to force the gage into press-fit relationship with the precise hole in the erected structural element.

  • Patent number: 4813819
Abstract: An annular hole cutter wherein each tooth is formed with a radially outer cutting edge and at least alternate teeth are formed with radially extending, circumferentially staggered inner and outer cutting edges. The bottom face of each tooth is formed with oppositely radially inclined inner and outer back-off faces which intersect in a downwardly extending crest which in turn intersects the radially outer cutting edge. The outer back-off faces of alternate teeth are vertically relieved relative to the outer back-off faces of the intermediate teeth and the inner back-off faces of the intermediate teeth are vertically relieved relative to the inner back-off faces of the alternate teeth a distance greater than the chip load at which the cutter is operated. In the preferred form, the radially inner portion only of the unrelieved inner back-off face is relieved to a greater extent than the relieved inner back-off faces.

  • Patent number: 4813830
Abstract: In an actuator, a carriage coupled to an item to be displaced with a translatory movement comprises a follower element which defines contact surfaces engaged against the flanks of the thread of a micrometric screw. The contact surfaces co-operate with the thread of the screw only over a small angular portion thereof. The follower element of the carriage is held on the thread of the screw by resilient thrust means acting on the carriage so as to urge it pivotally about an axis (X--X) which is parallel to its direction of translatory movement, being prevented from moving in all the other degrees of freedom. The actuator is especially adapted for use in translator devices in which the level of precision is of the order of a micrometer.

  • Patent number: 4813824
Abstract: A single-lip solid drilling tool has a one-piece shank with an integral head having a radially or diametrically extending groove for a blade with an eccentric tip. The blade is held in its groove by several clamping screws so that it can be removed for sharpening or for replacement with a fresh blade. One or both lateral portions of the blade extend beyond the periphery of the head to guide the tool in actual use. The shank has an eccentric coolant hole whose discharge end is adjacent the blade and which is formed by providing a short cylindrical hard-metal blank with an eccentric axially parallel bore before the blank is stretched to reduce its diameter to a requisite value and to simultaneously reduce the diameter of the bore. The stretched blank is then machined to provide it with one or more chip evacuating flutes and, if necessary, with one or more grooves for discrete guide members which extend beyond the peripheral surface of the head.

  • Patent number: 4813825
Abstract: A drilling spindle having a pressure foot is disclosed for handling drilling tools having relatively large diameter shank regions and relatively small diameter drilling bit portions regions. The pressure foot assembly includes a shutter plate which contacts and clamps the workpiece during drilling operations. The shutter plate translates along an axis transverse to the rotor axis to align either a small aperture or a large aperture with the rotor axis. The small aperture is sized to receive the drilling tool region of the drill, and permits the drilling region to be extended therethrough while providing good clamping of the workpiece during drilling. The large aperture is sized to receive the shank region of the tool, and permits the tool to be inserted or withdrawn from the spindle during tool changing operations.

  • Patent number: 4812091
Abstract: An exchange mechanism enables removable members such as a tool member to be secured to an irremovable machining center. The exchange mechanism comprises a cassette connectible to the tool member, and a plurality of locking members and associated actuator carried by the machining center. The actuator slides the locking members radially outwardly such that inclined faces on the locking members abut corresponding inclined faces on the cassette. The inclined faces are oriented such that a force is exerted on the cassette which has an axial component urging the cassette toward the machining center, and a radial component tending to center the cassette.

  • Patent number: 4809426
Abstract: A memory is built in a tool holder to which a working tool such as drill or the like is attached. Various tool information such as kind of tool, dimensions of tool, tool use time, and the like is written into the memory. The tool holder having the memory therein is coupled with an external unit by contactless coupling means which doesn't need any electrical coupling, thereby allowing the tool information to be written into or read out of the memory. The information is transmitted between the memory in the tool holder and the external unit by way of the optical or magnetical coupling. The memory built in the tool holder consists of a non-volatile memory such that the memory content is not erased even if the power supply is shut off.

  • Patent number: 4809995
Abstract: A quick-change mechanism is provided between a male member and a female member which has a socket with an axis. A flange is provided on each member, and in the flange of the female member an eccentric circular cam is pivotably mounted on one side of the socket. The cam may be pivoted through an arc between a locked and an unlocked condition in a single plane. The unlocked condition moves the cam laterally outwardly beyond the cam follower surface in the male member. As the cam is rotated towards the locked condition, the cam locking surface moves in a single plane laterally inwardly and establishes an axially inward force on the cam follower surface. The quick-change mechanism is small and compact and contained entirely within the flange of the female member. The foregoing abstract is merely a resume of one general application, is not a complete discussion of all principles of operation or applications, and is not to be construed as a limitation on the scope of the claimed subject matter.

  • Patent number: 4809414
Abstract: In an apparatus for manufacturing a bidirectionally openable slide fastener, a guide unit is disposed between a pair of spaced first and second slider attachment units for holding taut an individual slide fastener length between the guide unit and a chain gripper even when the individual slide fastener length is severed from a slide fastener chain after the threading of a first slider on the first slider attachment unit but before the threading of a second slider on the second slider attachment unit. With this guide unit, the individual slide fastener length is tensioned properly, so that the second slider can be smoothly and reliably threaded over the slide fastener length.
