  • Patent number: 4425959
Abstract: For casting bridges having cell connecting flanges or and poles, respectiy, formed thereon or on the connecting lugs of lead storage battery grids use is made of molds in which mold troughs for liquid lead are developed. In order to increase the life, reduce the heating time and produce a crack-free connection of the grid lugs with the cell connecting flanges, the mold troughs of the mold are developed as individual mold segments which can be separated from each other and are assembled in a segment holder to form the entire mold. The individual mold segments can in particular for this be provided with a heat insulation for the mold trough.

  • Patent number: 4425958
Abstract: With low-pressure or die-casting methods there frequently occur leaks during the transfer of the molten metal from the metal containing basin or vessel to the mold. These leaks often lead to serious accidents and related operating interruptions. According to the invention these problems are solved by a casting method, wherein all movements of the mold occur in a vertical plane. With a preferred embodiment of apparatus for the performance of the method the mold is placed in a positive or form-locking manner with its casting or pour opening upon the casting hole of the metal containing vessel or basin and pressed against the latter in a fluidtight fashion by means of a pneumatic lifting cylinder. This affords the advantage of a simple connection of the mold with the basin and without requiring a coupling mechanism, and, additionally, the heating of the riser or up tube and/or immersion tube can be omitted, which otherwise conventionally was performed by gas heating.

  • Patent number: 4422495
Abstract: A mold handling system and method wherein cars are moved along a closed vertical loop. A first elevator positions an empty car adjacent a mold-supply conveyor, whereupon a mold is pushed onto the car, after which the car is transferred into a pre-pour mold storage. The mold-bearing car is then moved onto a second elevator which lifts the car upwardly adjacent an elevated pouring deck. As the mold is elevated, a jacket and weight are automatically deposited thereon, and the mold is poured while the car rests on the second elevator. The mold-bearing car is then moved forwardly through a jacket-and-weight transfer station, after which the jacket and weight are automatically removed and recycled back for positioning on another mold arriving on the second elevator. The mold-bearing car is moved through a cooling region, and this is then transferred onto a third elevator which is tiltable so that the mold is dumped from the car.

  • Patent number: 4418741
Abstract: A method of controlling relative movement between an ingot and a mold consists of monitoring the level of the metal pool in the mold by measuring the voltage between the ingot and a mold section disposed above the metal pool, in contact with the bath of molten slag and insulated electrically from the ingot and from the ingot-forming mold section; comparing an instantaneous value of said voltage with a predetermined value and varying the relative speed of the ingot and the mold depending on a signal proportional to the difference between the instantaneous and the predetermined values of said voltage so that the predetermined level of the metal pool is restored.

  • Patent number: RE31482
Abstract: Tubular metal articles are produced by centrifugal casting in a rotary metal mold lined by centrifugally distributing a quantity of a dry finely particulate free flowing refractory material on the active mold surface with the quantity being in excess of that required for the lining, densifying the layer by rotating the mold at a rate such that the refractory layer is subjected to centrifugal force adequate to establish an equivalent specific gravity of at least 7.5, determined by multiplying the actual specific gravity of the refractory material by the number of gravities of centrifugal force, contouring the densified layer and removing the excess refractory material, rotating the mold at the casting rate and then introducing the molten metal for casting while continuing to rotate the mold at least that rate. Articles so cast have relatively smooth outer surfaces which require only finish machining.
