  • Patent number: 4582467
Abstract: A spacer extends between and engages the rear face of a first disk and front face of a second disk of co-rotating rotors of a two stage turbine. The spacer engages the disks radially inwardly of the blade root slots of each disk and defines an intermediate cooling air compartment between the disks, radially inward of the spacer. Each disk includes blade root slots, each having a blade root disposed therein and defining a cooling air passageway across each slot from the front to rear face of each disk. Cooling air from a compartment upstream of the first disk is directed downstream through the passageways across the slots and thence radially inwardly into the intermediate compartment between the disks. From the intermediate compartment the cooling air travels radially outwardly and then axially through the cooling air passageways across the second disk blade root slots.

  • Patent number: 4575306
Abstract: A mechanical seal mounting assembly for a centrifugal high solids concentration slurry pump is disclosed. A rotating seal ring adapter is secured to the pump's impeller drive shaft for rotation with the shaft. A stationary seal ring adapter is secured to a first end of a seal carrier which extends through the pump's back plate. A split gland ring is attached to a second end of the seal carrier and is supported by gland nuts threadedly carried on gland bolts. The gland bolts are attached to a bearing assembly for the pump shaft. Axial movement of the pump shaft to effect impeller clearance seal adjustment is possible without disturbing the mechanical seal adjustment. An O-ring is interposed between the pump back plate and the seal carrier and is held in place by an O-ring retainer secured to the back plate of the pump.

  • Patent number: 4557664
Abstract: An overhung steam turbine is described which features a seal assembly and a bearing assembly to minimize axial shaft movement. The seal assembly forms a pressure barrier between a relatively low vacuum exhaust region and an exhaust cavity disposed at one end of the rotor shaft to minimize the pressure differential across the ends of the shaft and the resultant thrust force of the rotor shaft against the turbine casing. A bearing assembly is provided which includes a pair of journal bearings and a pair of oppositely disposed thrust bearings. In one embodiment one thrust bearing is connected by an adapter ring which is mounted to a horizontally split bearing casing. In another embodiment, the thrust bearing is carried by one of the journal bearings. The journal bearings are preferrably connected by horizontally split ring bearings to facilitate insertion and removal of the bearings without removing the overhung shaft.

  • Patent number: 4554789
Abstract: An improved seal cooling apparatus is provided for use in a gas turbine engine. In a particular embodiment, this apparatus includes means for deriving conditioning air from air discharged from the compressor diffuser and directing this air onto the seal stator to improve its thermal response. The apparatus also includes means to inject a portion of the conditioning air into a cavity forward of the seal to purge the region and prevent zero airflow conditions during engine operation for the purpose of discouraging overheating of a portion of the compressor rotor. A portion of the conditioning air from the cavity is subsequently directed to flow through and thereby cool the seal.

  • Patent number: 4549848
Abstract: A radial fan comprises a spiral-shaped fan housing (1) and a drum-shaped wheel (9) which rotates in the direction in which the spiral increases and has an opening (15) facing towards an intake (16) in the end wall (5) of the housing. The area of the duct (18) formed by the housing and the periphery of the wheel increases continuously from a point where the duct cross-section is smallest up to an outlet part (21) where the cross-section is greatest and where the area is at least equal to the radius (R) of the wheel times its length (L). The intake is made eccentric by a guide vane (23) installed at the opening and extending near the inside (17) of the wheel by an edge part (26) located after the said point, cutting off the cross-section of the duct outwardly of the outer end (13) of the wheel. The rear face of the guide vane and the end wall (5) form an inwardly facing flow surface (33) which extends over approximately half the periphery of the wheel.

  • Patent number: 4546845
Abstract: An electropneumatic door control for vehicles is disclosed which consists of a pneumatic portion and an electronic portion. The electronic portion processes successive commands actuated by the vehicle operator to channel the signals to the pneumatic portion of the apparatus to activate alternate door openings and closings. Any blockage of the door movement is detected and signals processed to reverse the door closing or to halt the opening until the fault is corrected. The electronic portion also assures that the vehicle doors can only be opened after the vehicle has come to a stop, that when the vehicle doors are open the station or parking brake is held engaged, and that an audible warning signal sounds for a predetermined interval before the closing of the door.

  • Patent number: 4545725
Abstract: A stress corrosion cracking proof steam turbine in which dry steam is blown into the gap between the hub portions of adjacent turbine discs, thereby preventing corrosion in the gap. A nozzle diaphragm is provided between the discs and has an inside circumferential face which straddles the gap. Labyrinthine packing is provided on the inside face of the nozzle diaphragm and comprises an upstream, an intermediate, and a downstream group of fins. A steam reservoir is located between the intermediate and downstream group of fins and straddles the gap. A steam supply means is located inside the nozzle diaphragm and provides dry steam (from inside or outside the turbine) to the reservoir and thus to the gap. To prevent leakage of high pressure wet steam into the reservoir, a steam leakage capturing means is provided between the upstream and the intermediate group of fins.

  • Patent number: 4544326
Abstract: A turbine scroll passage of a turbine is divided into first and second scroll passages extending in parallel to each other along the scroll passage. The first passage is formed with a side aperture for directing the fluid in the scroll passage to a turbine wheel. The second passage is isolated from the side aperture by a partition wall separating the second passage from the first passage. The partition wall is formed with a longitudinally extending opening for providing a fluid communication between the first and second passages. The opening extends longitudinally through about 360 degrees around the axis of the turbine, and has a constant width over its length. In the secondary passage, there is disposed a valve of a swing, rotary or other type, for closing the secondary passage. When the turbine is a part of a turbocharger connected with an internal combustion engine, the secondary passage is closed by the valve in a low engine speed range.
