  • Patent number: 4541772
Abstract: A turbo-molecular pump with passive, radial magnetic bearings and axial bearings has both direct and indirect damping arrangements for unwanted oscillations. Direct damping is produced by eddy currents produced in copper rings around the magnetic stators of the magnetic bearings. Indirect damping is provided through a platform, carried by springs and connected to the pump housing by oscillation dampers.

  • Patent number: 4540334
Abstract: The housing wall (23) through which the impeller shaft passes is embodied as a truncated cone. The leading edge (28) of the impeller blade flank (27) on the delivery side of the pump which grazes this housing wall with little clearance (24) extends in a spiral from the impeller blade tip (35) up to a point (31) at which it terminate in the hub; as a result, a relatively large area of the housing wall (23) having a width b decreasing toward the inside and located between the blade flank on the delivery side and the blade flank on the intake side is exposed between the blade outlet tip (35) and this terminal point (31).

  • Patent number: 4535591
Abstract: A reaction force mechanism for a brake power booster includes an elastic member (53) which forms a hydraulic pressure reaction force chamber (50) and is spaced from an end surface (17d) of an input shaft (17) by a predetermined distance (.delta.) so that braking hydraulic pressure is not immediately detected by a driver. In addition, a passage (57) normally provides communication between the hydraulic pressure reaction force chamber and a primary side pressure chamber (45) of the master cylinder, and, alternatively, provides communication between the hydraulic pressure reaction force chamber and a secondary side pressure chamber (46) of the master cylinder when no hydraulic pressure is established in the primary side pressure chamber of the master cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4536128
Abstract: The barrel housing of a multistage centrifugal pump has an elongated cylindrical main section and a discrete annular section which is inserted into one end portion and defines an annular shoulder facing the other end portion of the main section. The shoulder is engaged by the inner casing of the pump. The annular section can constitute a prefabricated component or is formed by cladding. The inlet opening of the housing is provided only in the one end portion of the main section, only in a portion of the annular section which extends outwardly beyond the one end portion of the main section, or is a composite opening having a first part in the one end portion of the main section and a registering second part in the annular section. The outlet opening for compressed fluid is provided in the other end portion of the main section.

  • Patent number: 4534700
Abstract: In an exhaust-gas turbocharger having an uncooled gas duct, the hot gas casing is connected to the relatively cooler supporting casing by a supporting member resilient in the radial direction. The supporting member consists of an outer flange and an inner flange and of a diaphragm disposed therebetween and comprising at least one fold and two flanks extending predominantly in the axial direction. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the material of the diaphragm flanks is preferably from 5% to 40% higher than that of the hot gas casing.

  • Patent number: 4531370
Abstract: A brake actuation assembly 10 having a master cylinder 12 attached to a stationary wall (14) of a vehicle and a power assist apparatus 16. Linkage 66 connects a movable wall 125 in the power assist apparatus 16 with pistons 64 and 68 in chambers 60 and 62 in the master cylinder 12. A valve 133 responds to an input from an operator to allow a pressure differential to be created across wall 125. The pressure differential moves the wall 125 while at the same time the linkage moves pistons 64 and 68 to pressurize fluid in the master cylinder 12. An adjustment mechanism 82 acts on the piston 68 to control the timing of the interruption of fluid communication between a reservoir 46 and chambers 60 and 62 as a direct function of movement of wall 125.

  • Patent number: 4530639
Abstract: The improved dual-entry radial compressor rotor of the present invention has two sets of alternating full length and partial length blades on a symmetrical hub, with the partial length blades on one hub side terminating at the rotor high velocity exit coincident with the full length blades on the other hub side, to smooth the gas velocity profile in the tangential direction. Aerodynamically shaped sawtooth-profiled reliefs are provided in the hub radial portion between the blade tips to allow induced pressure differentials between the flow paths to smooth the axial velocity profile.

  • Patent number: 4528894
Abstract: An active pneumatic mechanism and a passive hydraulic mechanism of the apparatus are so connected with each other and with a driven member that movement imparted by the pneumatic mechanism to the driven member produces, and is controllable by restriction of, hydraulic fluid flow within the hydraulic mechanism. Restriction of the fluid flow to any desired extent is accomplished by command signals directed by a control computer to a valve that preferably is of the type actuable by a torque motor. The command signals produced by the computer are based upon a correlation of data supplied by a computer program with data supplied by a monitor of the positions of the driven member along its path of travel. Precise control of the speeds, accelerations and positions of the driven member are realized.

  • Patent number: 4527385
Abstract: A sealing device is disclosed for maintaining a small positive clearance between the sealing sectors and the turbine blade tips of a turbojet engine. The sealing segments are connected to an internal ring structure and an external ring structure located within the casing of the jet engine. The two ring structures serve to expand and contract the diameter of the ring formed by the sealing segments in conjunction with the expansion and contraction of the turbine blades for stabilized and transient engine operating modes. The device utilizes ventilating air taken from a stage of the jet engine compressor to cause the radial expansion or contraction of the internal and external rings in direct conjunction with the conditions under which the engine is operating.

The pump includes a housing having an impeller unit including arcuate vanes, eccentrically mounted therein, the impeller having a pair of circular expeller faces on each side of the arc-shaped vanes, in order to effect water seals within the pump housing, to eliminate the need for mechanical seals. Thus, only the motor driving the pump need be sealed, when submersed, the pump itself requiring no critical bearings or seals.

The blade entry angle on the cover plate side is between 14.degree. and 20.degree. and the blade exit angle on the cover plate side is between 39.degree. and 45.degree.. This form is produced by twist of the blades or twist-free deformation thereof.

  • Patent number: 4521159
Abstract: A load distribution member for the turbine of a gas turbine engine comprises an annular diaphragm between regions P.sub.1 and P.sub.2 of high and low gas pressure respectively which is in the form of a part of a complete thin shelled toroid having a circular cross-section area of revolution. The radially outer edge of the annular diaphragm has a ring member attached thereto which is attached in turn to the undersides of an annular array of stator aerofoil vanes. The radially inner edge of the annular diaphragm has a ring member attached thereto which carries one element of an annular gas seal. The other element of the seal is attached to a rotary part of the turbine. The configuration of the part-toroid shape of the diaphragm is selected so that the axial forces exerted by the diaphragm upon the radially inner ring member are zero, thereby minimizing the degree of axial deflection of the seal element.

  • Patent number: 4519295
Abstract: A power assist apparatus (18) having a first shell (32) connected to a second shell (34) by a twist lock arrangement (41). The shells (32) and (34) are made of a light weight and flexible material such that when subjected to temperatures above 120.degree. F. the pressure differential created by vacuum on the inside of the shells (32 & 34) and atmospheric pressure on the outside of the shells (32 & 34) a crushing force is produced that urges the end (33) of the shell (32) toward shell (34). A plurality of struts (98) located between the shells (32 & 34) resists this crushing force to maintain the minimum spacial relationship between shells (32 & 34).
