By continually updating a model for the load on an electrical branch, an estimate of the behavior of that load may be calculated. Since electrical arcing faults result in a chaotic behavior that is difficult to describe, when arcing occurs, the model will be unable to adequately describe the arcing behavior and this inability indicates a fault condition, in response to which, power may be removed in full or in part from the faulted electrical network. In some embodiments, a current shunt is used to distinguish between source side and load side arcing. Some embodiments utilize a solid state switch as both current shunt and interruption means.

This process is repeated, wrapping around and overwriting buffers until the signal data in a current buffer does not have a local extreme value that exceeds the global extreme value. When this happens, signal data may be stored in a subsequent buffer and if a local extreme value of the subsequent buffer does not exceed the global extreme value, further signal data may be stored in the subsequent buffer in a circular manner until either an instantaneous extreme value exceeds the global extreme value or the recording period ends. In an embodiment, the extreme value may be a peak value.

    Abstract: An improved regression-based qualitative analysis algorithm useful when the mixture to be analyzed contains a compound not in the library spectra, a so-called unknown. A regression of a measured spectrum is computed against the library spectra. This regression is referred to as a “master” regression. Estimated mixing coefficients for an estimated spectrum are computed from the regression. Next, a residual error is computed between the estimated spectrum and the measured spectrum. Peaks in the residual error are identified that extend in a direction opposite to that of peaks in the measured spectrum. These peaks are referred to as “negative” peaks. A regression is performed on the peaks. This is referred to as a “retro-regression” to be distinguished from the master regression performed on the measured spectrum.
