Patent number: 4017205Abstract: A vertical axis windmill is taught having a horizontal base, preferably circular in configuration, sitting on the earth's surface, a dome having a horizontal bottom spaced above the base supported on a plurality of columns to provide an annular space below the dome bottom, a conical baffle positioned on the base below the dome, the conical axis being coincidental with the vertical axis of the dome, the dome having a circular roof orifice therein coaxial with the axis of the conical baffle, a vertical shaft supported coaxially by the conical baffle and an impeller affixed to the shaft and positioned in the dome circular orifice. Wind blowing relative to the windmill causes a lifting force by the aerodynamic effect of the dome, the wind passing upwardly through the annular opening and upwardly through the dome orifice, imparting rotational energy to the impeller. Power using apparatus such as generators or the like may be attached to the rotating vertical shaft.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1975Date of Patent: April 12, 1977Inventor: Victor W. Bolie

Patent number: 4013378Abstract: An axial flow turbine incorporating an exhaust hood for receiving exhaust steam from the turbine and directing this exhaust steam through a discharge opening in the hood in a direction essentially normal to the axis of the turbine is disclosed. The exhaust hood includes a first set of guide vanes arranged in an exhaust duct connected to the turbine adjacent the last stage buckets thereof. These vanes are curved to provide a relatively smooth transition of steam flow from an axial direction to a generally radial direction. A guide ring circumferentially surrounds the first set of guide vanes and a plurality of secondary vanes are circumferentially spaced around this guide ring. Steam which is discharged radially from the first set of vanes to the secondary vanes is directed by the secondary vanes to the discharge opening of the exhaust hood.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1976Date of Patent: March 22, 1977Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Josef Herzog

Patent number: 4013377Abstract: A two shaft gas turbine engine is shown wherein the power turbine comprises a single stage which is closely coupled to the compressor turbine through an annular transition portion having radially diverging side walls forming an inner and outer shroud. The relatively high velocity of the working fluid is maintained through the transition portion by an array of non-rotating stationary struts. Each strut defines a camber line which at the entry of the strut is angled to receive the working fluid, having a swirl component therein, at a 0.degree. angle of incidence. Further, each strut has a configuration which, in cooperation with the increasing angle of the camber line compensates for the divergence of the shrouds to maintain the flow of the working fluid at a generally undiminished velocity therethrough.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1975Date of Patent: March 22, 1977Assignee: Westinghouse Electric CorporationInventor: David J. Patent number: 4012164Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating power and for pumping fluids, wherein a free vortex cavity, within a rotating rotor, is used to pressurize a fluid after which the fluid may be used as a pressurized fluid or be used to generate power. The working fluid is injected into the free vortex cavity through feed nozzles oriented to discharge the working fluid forwardly in the direction of rotation, so that the working fluid rotational speed is normally, at least in part of the cavity, greater than the rotational speed of the rotor. The working fluid is pressurized within the vortex cavity by being forced to follow a curved path. Part of the working fluid is taken near the periphery of the curved passage, and recirculated through nozzles located toward the rotor center from the periphery thus providing additional fluid flow within the free vortex cavity and improving the rotor performance.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 1975Date of Patent: March 15, 1977Inventor: Michael Eskeli

Patent number: 4012166Abstract: A supersonic shock wave compressor diffuser forms a concentric annulus about a radial compressor having a central axis. Circular channels diverge with an increasing divergence angle as they extend along an arcuate longitudinal center line from an inner circumference very near the periphery of the compressor to the outer circumference of the diffuser. Shock waves may occur within the channels near the inner circumference of the diffuser or may occur within a vaneless diffusion space adjacent the periphery of the compressor and provide efficient energy conversion and reduce the velocity substantially below MACH 1 to further improve the efficiency of the subsonic diffusion downstream therefrom. A logarithmic spiral is approximated by a circular arc subtended by the channel longitudinal axes to permit recovery of angular momentum while the circular cross section of the channels permits recovery of swirl velocity energy.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1974Date of Patent: March 15, 1977Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventors: Merle L. Patent number: 4006998Abstract: An impeller for a ring compressor is disclosed. More particularly, the impeller is designed so that the ratio of the area of the individual blades of the impeller to the cross section area of the side channel of the compressor is equal to or smaller than 0.72 and so that the ratio of the pitch or spacing between adjacent blades of the impeller to the width dimension of the side channel cross section is likewise equal to or smaller than 0.72. Design of the impeller in this manner decreases the gas volume dragged across the interrupter or break in the side channel without appreciably decreasing the discharge head.Type: GrantFiled: July 7, 1975Date of Patent: February 8, 1977Assignee: Siemens AktiengesellschaftInventor: Siegfried Schonwald

Patent number: 4005946Abstract: Methods and apparatus for controlling the radial clearance between the rotor and stator elements in the turbine section of a gas turbine engine is disclosed. A cooling air valve is operatively disposed at the upstream end of the turbine section to control the admission of cooling air to the turbine in response to engine operating temperatures. In one specific embodiment the thermal growth of the case and the stator elements supported thereby is controlled by the valve. At low power conditions the case and the supported elements grow radially with the rotor in response to increasing gas path temperatures. At elevated conditions cooling air is flowable to the case to retard the thermal growth of the case and allow the rotor to grow radially toward the stator elements.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 1975Date of Patent: February 1, 1977Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: Bertrand Hirsch Brown, Francis Louis DeTolla, Dale Robert Reilly

Patent number: 4004859Abstract: A speed responsive shutoff for a pneumatic tool such as a nut runner is disclosed. The shutoff, effective to terminate air supply to the air motor under load, employs a centrifugally operated air valve having a flat valve head which is biased against a valve seat through which pressurized air travels en route to the motor. A small orifice in the valve head leads to an expansible chamber behind the head. In operation of the tool, when the throttle valve is open, initial air is supplied to the motor by a slight opening of the air valve due to a higher pressure in front of the valve head than behind it. The motor quickly reaches a predetermined speed level at which time the air valve is fully opened by centrifugal weights. Under loading approaching stall, the motor slows to a speed low enough to allow the air valve to move toward closure under the influence of a spring.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1975Date of Patent: January 25, 1977Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventor: John A. Borries

Patent number: 4003675Abstract: A mechanism for varying the position of a plurality of nozzle vanes in a gas turbine engine. The mechanism includes a single double-acting hydraulic actuating jack disposed between two bell cranks for simultaneously applying force to a ring gear at two diametrically opposed connection points. The single actuating jack applies equal and opposite forces to the diametrically opposed connection points on the ring gear and reduces distortion producing stresses therein. The ring gear simultaneously engages a plurality of individual gear segments rotatable with each individual nozzle vane in the engine. Movement of the single actuator jack causes balanced rotation of the ring gear and simultaneous rotation of the nozzle vanes.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1975Date of Patent: January 18, 1977Assignee: Caterpillar Tractor Co.Inventors: Wallace Gene Stevens, Karl Wilfred Karstensen
