    Abstract: A rotary centrifugal pump having an axial inlet and discharge in a casing together with an impeller having liquid impelling vanes on both surfaces thereof with the impeller having central openings enabling inlet liquid to be impelled by vanes on both surfaces of the impeller with the impeller being provided with spaced annular seal rings mounted on each side thereof. The pump includes a water cooled lubricant for a bearing and a seal box in which lubricant is maintained under pressure by the liquid being pumped. The pump is adapted for use as a single stage, multiple stage, or deep hole pump and is capable of producing relatively high pressures and high volume discharge.

    Abstract: Radial runner blades projecting axially from a shroud plate have leading faces inclined from the axial central portions of the blades forward to a cutting edge adjacent to an intake casing wall at an angle of 45.degree.. The trailing wall of each blade is bent to form a reflex angle at approximately its axial central portion, and each blade flares in cross-sectional thickness from its axial central portion toward its edge adjacent to the intake wall. A screw propeller connected to the runner and located at the side of the intake wall opposite the runner facilitates flow of material to the pump toward the casing intake ports, slices sliceable articles into pieces of a size for passage through the intake ports and displaces unsliceable objects for clearing the intake ports.

    Abstract: A hydraulic turbine is disclosed having wicket gate vanes which are rotatable between extreme positions to interrupt and permit the flow of water through a substantially cylindrical water passageway. In order to effectively block the flow of water through the passageway, the outer peripheral surface of the vanes must have a spherical configuration to match the circular cross-section of the cylindrical passageway. However, with this configuration, when the vanes are in an open position, a vee-shaped space is defined between the ends of the vanes and the water passageway. Baffles are provided to fill this space so that debris cannot collect therein.

    Abstract: A moisture removal scheme for an axial flow turbine apparatus is disclosed. A substantially radial groove disposed on a rotating blade conducts moisture droplets deposited on the blade in a radial direction toward a circumferential slot disposed on the interior surface of a turbine casing. The slot is radially adjacent to the radial outermost point of the groove and collects moisture thrown thereinto from the groove to eliminate that moisture from the interior of the turbine. Axial ridges are provided on the blade to guide the moisture droplets deposited thereon into the radial groove.

Steam is extracted through an extraction orifice having a circumferentially-varying throat portion, the throat communicating with a diffusing passage leading into a circumferentially-extending extraction manifold. The manifold is connected to an extraction pipe of predetermined cross-section area. Steam extracted from the blade path is conducted through the extraction pipe to an associated user apparatus. The dimension of the throat in the longitudinal plane relative to the axis of the shaft and the radial dimension of the manifold in a plane normal to the shaft axis are sized and cooperatively related such that steam is uniformly extracted from the blade path without creating significant pressure variations at various circumferential locations therewithin.

The passages are of curvilinear cross-section having entrance throat regions of an eccentric configuration designed to minimize the build-up of shock waves in the fluid flowing from the outlet of an impeller whose blade tips are traveling at supersonic speed. The configuration of the throat region is such that it closely matches the velocity vector profiles of fluid particles which leave the central region of an impeller blade at supersonic velocities and an appreciable angle above the tangential whereas particles leaving near the front and back shrouds of the impeller travel slower at angles approaching the tangential.

    Abstract: The segmented casing has a plurality of successive stage casing rings, a transfer plate intermediate each adjacent pair of casing rings, a suction end casing section, and a discharge end casing section. Each casing ring encloses a complete stage containing an impeller which is spring biased into engagement with a locating collar secured to the shaft, and a pair of replaceable liners which are arranged at the opposite sides of each impeller. Each casing ring, impeller, set of liners, locating collar, and spring means, together comprises a module which functions as one stage of the pump. A pump is comprised of two or more modules which are connected internally by a shaft and externally by draw bolts, and which are contained by the suction and discharge end casing sections. Suction and discharge connections are demountably secured to the casing in any one of several rotative positions.

The shutter device is operated by means responsive to rotation of the impeller shaft for moving the shutter means to the open position when the impeller is rotating and to the closed position when the impeller is not rotating. The shutter operating means may be such that substantially no thrust or load is placed upon the prime mover when it is rotating at a selected operating speed.
