Abstract: An engine which employs a cam follower mechanism to reduce wear and reduce the size of an assembled engine. The cam follower mechanism utilizes guide rails located to reduce side thrust on the valve stem. The engine employs a high speed quill shaft to synchronize independent cam shafts existing in each of a plurality of interconnected engines. The engine is assembled using a single size fastener to provide a uniform stress gradient within the engine. The engines are interconnected utilizing O-ring seals. The engine provides a piston crown utilizing a connecting rod directly connected to the bottom surface of the piston crown. The piston crown is stabilized along the longitudinal cylinder axis by a rail guide. Connecting rods are provided which require less than one hundred eighty degrees (180.degree.) circumference of a crankshaft pin for support so that a plurality of connecting rods can be associated with a single crankshaft pin.

  • Patent number: 5983497
Abstract: A method for forming an enlarged diameter aluminum alloy driveshaft tube having an interior reduced diameter portion that avoids clearance issues with respect to other components of the vehicle includes the initial step of providing a tube of aluminum alloy material having a diameter that corresponds to the enlarged diameter of the driveshaft tube to be formed. Then, a determination is made as to whether any component of the vehicle is located sufficiently close to the driveshaft tube to interfere with the rotation thereof during normal operation. If so, the position and axial length of the potential interference is located on the aluminum alloy tube. A diameter reducing process is then performed on the aluminum alloy tube to form the interior reduced diameter portion to eliminate the potential interference.

  • Patent number: 5974663
Abstract: An integral cast-iron connecting rod blank having a smaller-diameter end, a shank, and a larger-diameter end with a crank opening is set on an inclined base, and the tip end of a laser beam applying device is positioned in the larger-diameter end. While a YAG laser beam from the laser beam applying device is being applied to diametrically opposite inner central wall regions of the larger-diameter end, the laser beam applying device is moved to form notches transversely in the respective inner central wall regions. Two spreading elements are placed in the crank opening, and then a tapered wedge is inserted downwardly between the spreading elements. A downward impact point load is applied to a load bearing surface of the wedge thereby to apply spreading forces to the larger-diameter end. A crack starting radially outwardly from the notches is developed in the larger-diameter end, dividing the larger-diameter end into a saddle and a cap.

  • Patent number: 5966800
Abstract: A method of making a magnetic head which includes first and second pole tip layers separated by a nonmagnetic gap layer includes making the pole tips of a high magnetic moment material. The right side walls of the first and second pole tips are vertically aligned with each other. Similarly, the left side walls of the first and second pole tips are vertically aligned with one another. The side fringing flux from one pole tip to another is substantially reduced resulting in a magnetic head capable of writing data tracks with well defined boundaries. The possibility of the pole tips operating in magnetic saturation is reduced because the pole tips, formed of high magnetic moment material, is capable of accommodating high coercive force. The magnetic head can be fabricated as an inverted head or a non-inverted head capable of writing on magnetic media with high coercivity and at a high data transfer rate.
