  • Patent number: 6061906
Abstract: A process for manufacturing a spool valve whereby a plurality of quenching processed collars are fitted to a shaft material so that the collars are arranged at predetermined positions on the shaft material. The collars have respective substantially central holes through which the shaft material extends. The diameter of portions of the shaft material is contracted in a vicinity of both opposite ends of each of the collars by rolling dies so as to cause plastic flow of a metal constituting the shaft material. Pairs of circular convex portions are then formed on outer circumferential faces of the diameter contracted portions of the shaft material.

  • Patent number: 6055726
Abstract: A water-cooled, two-stroke crankcase compression internal combustion engine for powering a motor vehicle. The engine includes a piston, piston rings, and cylinder bore arrangement that are constructed to inhibit piston ring sticking by cooling the piston ring gaps by holding them against rotation and spraying fuel from a fuel injector toward the gap for cooling it. Overheating of the small end of the connecting rod is inhibited by surface treating portions of the piston to render them harder and less heat conductive. Scuffing of the piston, piston rings, and cylinder bore are reduced by surface treating the area of the head of the piston around the ring grooves so as to trap and retain lubricant. The surface treatment includes the steps of utilizing an acid wash to dissolve and remove silicon particles and subsequently alumitc treating the washed area.

  • Patent number: 6055728
Abstract: An automatically assembling method to connect two members while providing an intermediate member therebetween, including first, second, and third steps. In the first step, a first member and a second member are connected together without interposing the intermediate member therebetween. In the second step, the first and second members are separated away from each other in a predetermined direction, and the first member is set in a predetermined position with respect to the intermediate member while keeping a positioning relationship with the second member. In the third step, the first and second members are approached and connected to each other while providing the intermediate member therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6052900
Abstract: A power steering control valve (22) has an inner valve member (40) which is connected with a follow-up member (54) by a torsion bar (102). An outer valve member (42) is fixedly connected with the follow-up member (54) by indentations (56). Before the outer valve member (42) is fixedly connected with the follow-up member (54) by the indentations (56), the inner and outer valve members (40 and 42) are moved relative to each other to determine a hydraulically centered condition. When the power steering control valve (22) is in the hydraulically centered condition, equal fluid pressures are conducted to a power steering motor (31) in response to equal clockwise or counterclockwise actuation of the valve members (40 and 42) relative to each other. The outer valve member (42) is then fixedly connected with the follow-up member (54) with the power steering control valve (22) in the hydraulically centered condition.

  • Patent number: 6052896
Abstract: A method is provided for installing an oil pan heater on an oil pan while the oil pan is mounted on an engine block. Oil is drained from the engine oil pan. Then the engine oil pan is pierced to provide a pilot hole having pierced ends extending into the engine oil pan. A circular chamfered groove is formed surrounding the pilot hole so as to provide an oil pan thickness at a base of the chamfered groove. A pull is inserted into the oil pan through the pilot hole to engage an internal portion of the oil pan surrounding the pilot hole. The pull extracts a circular slug from the oil pan and a substantially circular hole is formed in the oil pan. An expandable heater bushing is inserted in the substantially circular hole. The heater bushing has an expandable tubular section extending from an enlarged head. The tubular section is crimped and the enlarged head is sealed to the oil pan. Then the heater is attached to the enlarged head.

  • Patent number: 6049981
Abstract: A flat plate is molded in such a manner that a pair of semidivided cylindrical portions are arranged in parallel to each other with an arc-shaped connecting portion between them. Tube insertion holes are formed in one of the pair of semidivided cylindrical portions. Then, the connecting portion is projected from the inside thereof to thereby dispose the pair of semidivided cylindrical portions in such a manner that they are opposed to each other. The mutually opposed semidivided cylindrical portions are butted against each other, thereby manufacturing a cylindrically-shaped header pipe. The tube insertion holes are formed only in one of the pair of semidivided cylindrical portions in such a manner that the tube insertion holes are not allowed to extend up to the connecting portion.

  • Patent number: 6049978
Abstract: A method for repairing gas turbine engine airfoil parts. The dimensional differences between pre-repaired dimensions of a turbine engine airfoil part and desired post-repair dimensions of the turbine engine airfoil part are determined. A build-up thickness of coating material required to obtain the desired post-repair dimensions of the turbine engine airfoil part is determined. A high-density coating process, such as HVOF, is used to coat the turbine engine airfoil part with a coating material to the determined build-up thickness of coating material effective to obtain the desired post-repair dimensions after performing a sintering heat treatment and a hot isostatic pressing treatment, and, if performed, a re-application of a protective coating. The coating material comprises a metal alloy capable of forming a diffusion bond with the substrate of the turbine engine airfoil part.

  • Patent number: 6047472
Abstract: The process and apparatus avoid incorrect assembly and added expense caused by prior art alternating manual and equipment-reinforced assembly operations. Full automation is attained in that the component group is picked up by a robot and transferred to a press-fitting unit. Once the crankcase and the crankshaft, with the aid of rotary and adjusting devices, have been rotated into an assembly position for the piston and the connecting rod, the component group is introduced into a cylinder opening until the connecting rod contacts the crankshaft. The robot then picks up a connecting rod cap that has already been equipped with screws and screws it together with the connecting rod.

  • Patent number: 6044538
Abstract: A simple joining process for members of passive microwave structures is described which reduces passive intermodulation. The process forms an aperture in a first member and forms a second member to have dimension which exceeds the aperture dimension by a dimension differential. The members are joined by initially causing them to have a temperature differential that is sufficient to permit the second member to be positioned across the aperture. The dimension differential is selected to generate mutually-induced radial stresses in the members, after the temperature differential is removed, which enhance the metal-to-metal contact between the members and, thereby, improve passive intermodulation (PIM) performance. Preferably, the dimension differential is selected to cause the second member to elastically buckle and exert a buckling stress against the first member. Additional interface structures are provided to resist operational axial forces, e.g., vibration, that tend to dislodge the members.

  • Patent number: 6038768
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for coupling heat exchange tubing to header pipes which include flanges are disclosed. Heat exchange tubing may generally be coupled, or bonded, to header pipe arrangements in order to produce heat exchanging devices which may be used in solar heating systems and thermal energy storage (TES) devices. According to one aspect of the present invention, a method for forming a heat exchanging device includes pretreating the ends of the heat exchange tubes used in the device. The pretreated ends are then heated to at least partially melt the pretreated ends. At the same time, heat is also applied to the header pipe arrangement included in the device to at least partially melt a flange arrangement which is a part of the overall header pipe arrangement. The pretreated ends of the heat exchange tubes are then sealed against the header pipe arrangement.
