  • Patent number: 4401584
Abstract: Surfactant-modified, 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane solvent compositions are provided which contain small but effective amounts, i.e., about 0.2 to about 0.5 weight percent of solvent soluble/water insoluble surfactant and/or surfactant demulsifiers and adjust to accommodate. Of particular significance are the compositions containing N-acylated sarcosine surfactants and demulsifiers of the group acetylenic diols, aliphatic primary alcohols of 6 to 12 carbon atoms, and alkyl phosphate triesters of 3 to 12 carbon atoms. The demulsifier containing compositions have the properties of effectively and essentially completely displacing water or aqueous solutions from many substrates and, even under conditions of severe agitation, separating them for removal by decantation from the solvent layer without the drawback of forming stable emulsions that prevent said decantation and interfere with sufficient processing of the solvent drying compositions through the drying apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4400291
Abstract: An ethylene gas generating liquid composition for catalytic conversion to ethylene. Ethanol is the primary ingredient of the liquid composition but there is also present 1.0% to 15% methanol, 0.1% to 10% of an ester such as amyl acetate and 0.1% to 15% of an aliphatic alcohol such as isopropanol. This liquid composition has been found to maintain a high conversion efficiency for the catalyst and minimizes the production of by-products.

  • Patent number: 4397756
Abstract: The invention is a composition of matter and method for its use in reducing formaldehyde emission from wood composite panels bonded with aminoplast resins. The preferred composition comprises urea, a carbohydrate based material such as cooked or gelatinized starch, and an acidic catalyst for the resin. The ratio of urea to carbohydrate based material is in the range of 10:1 to 40:1 while the urea forms from 20-60% of the composition. In use, the composition is preferably sprayed on the wood particles, flakes or fiber in the blender at the same time resin is added. Typical usage is 0.4-3 parts, on a urea basis, added to each 100 parts of dry wood substance. Depending on several factors, the reduction in formaldehyde emission ranges from 60-90% without serious deterioration occurring in any other product physical properties.

  • Patent number: 4396526
Abstract: A peroxide system or composition for use in resin polymerization consists of 1,4-diisopropylbenzene monohydroperoxide dissolved in an organic solvent which is a solvent for hydrogen peroxide and 1,4-diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide. The peroxide composition is characterized by its storage stability, resistance to detonation, low flammability, ease of handling and improved catalytic properties in the polymerization of certain resins. The preferred peroxide, based on economic considerations, is a crude diisopropylbenzene hydroperoxide mixture comprising a major amount of 1,4-diisopropylbenzene monohydroperoxide and a minor amount of 1,4-diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide, together with solvents and unreacted materials obtained as a byproduct in the commercial manufacture of p-diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide.

  • Patent number: 4395749
Abstract: A boat trailer has a base plate attached to the trailer fender. A hollow bar is pivotably attached at one end to the base plate and releasably fastened near its opposite end to the rear of the fender. A bracket for supporting a lamp and license plate is attached at the opposite end of the bar. Electrical wires extend from the vehicle's electrical system through the bar to the lamp. The bar is fastened to the base in such a fashion that the lamp and license plate are repositionable from the rear of the trailer where the lamp and license plate are located during over-the-road travel to a position forward of the fender prior to launching a boat from the trailer. In this regard, the bar is released from the fender and rotated 180.degree. so that the lamp and license plate are forward of the fender whereby the lamp and associated electrical wiring will not contact the water during launching of the boat thus avoiding dangerous electrical conditions.

  • Patent number: 4390447
Abstract: A manufacturing process for nickel (II) hydroxide suitable as active positive electrode material in alkaline electrochemical cells transforms solid Ni(NO.sub.3).sub.2 directly into Ni(OH).sub.2 using sodium hydroxide and with the least possible homogeneous solute phase of Ni.sup.2+ ions. Ni(NO.sub.3).sub.2 is deposited on the lower end of a diagonally upward moving conveyor belt, to which concentrated NaOH is supplied from the opposite direction. The depressions in the conveyor belt, which prevent downward sliding of the reaction product, discharge at the upper end Ni(OH).sub.2, together with easily separable NaNO.sub.3. At the lower end, the used NaOH is discharged. It can be reconcentrated, after separation of entrained NaNO.sub.3, in a vacuum evaporator and reused. The intermediate products of the process are basic nickel nitrates, for example of the composition Ni(NO.sub.3).sub.2 .times.Ni(OH).sub.2 .times.6H.sub.2 O.
