Abstract: A gaseous lantern ventilator including an outer shell concentrically spaced over an inner metal liner which collects and exhausts the hot gases from the burner assembly through a chimney, the upper end of which is surrounded by an annular opening in the outer shell. The rising hot gases will entrain outside cool air drawn between the shell and liner, thereby cooling the liner and substantially reducing the surface temperature of the outside shell.
Abstract: A photoflash unit having a plurality of high voltage type flashlamps mounted in a planar array on a printed circuit board containing circuitry for sequentially igniting the flashlamps in response to successive high voltage firing pulses applied thereto. The circuitry includes a plurality of solid state switches capable of being easily activated by radiant energy generated during flashing of lamps located adjacent to respective switches. Initially, the switches have a high resistance, and after being activated by radiation, they undergo chemical conversion to a conductive state. The switches are prepared from compositions which include a comparatively large proportion of nonconductive inert particulate solids to improve switch functioning.
Abstract: An inorganic oxide impregnated with poly(aminostyrene) whose amino groups are covalently bonded to carboxyl groups of chiral organic hydroxy acids may be used as the solid stationary phase in the chromatographic separation of racemic mixtures.
Abstract: Material which can be utilized as the stationary phase in liquid-solid chromatography for the resolution of racemic mixtures comprises an inorganic oxide silylated with a reagent whose remaining terminus is covalently bonded to a chiral hydroxy acid. For example, a 3-aminopropylsilylated silica gel may be reacted with a chiral tartaric anhydride to form a carboxamide linkage by which the chiral acid is covalently bound to the support.
Abstract: Sulfur-containing compounds such as hydrogen sulfide and sulfur oxides arising from gasification or combustion of organic fuels such as coal may be removed from the hot gases by attrition resistant, highly reactive limestone-based sorbent agglomerates. The agglomerates are formed by crushing and powdering naturally occurring limestone into grains of fine particle size and binding the powdered limestone grains with a binder that is stable at high temperature, for example a colloidal grade of attapulgite clay. Volatile liquid is added to the mix of binder and powdered limestone to form a paste-like mixture, which is then agglomerated in compression-type agglomerating equipment to form spheroidal agglomerates having good green strength. In fluidized bed combustion applications, these agglomerates have attrition resistance equivalent to conventional natural limestone granules and are far more reactive in terms of sulfur pickup.
Abstract: A luminaire for an electric lamp in which the two parts of a bipartite housing having a double-hinge are connected together comprises according to the invention a stop by which the possibility of rotation around a shaft of the double hinge is restricted. In spite of an overlap of one part of the housing by the other part of the housing, the housing is opened and closed thereby in a quasi-single rotating movement. In a special embodiment means are present near the main point of rotation so as to space the two parts of the housing from each other upon opening same.
Abstract: A lighting fixture for use in therapeutic treatment having a lamphousing with a plurality of lamps located therein which are simultaneously moved within the lighting fixture lamp housing for adjusting the focal point of the lamps by moving a single control handle which is also used to adjust the position of the lamp housing itself. The single control handle is detachable so that it can be sterilized and thereby allowing for sterile conditions to be maintained each time the lighting fixture is used.
Abstract: Apparatus for controlling reflected radiant energy to progressively vary distribution of the reflected radiant energy between spot and flood configurations comprises a housing body having a reflector surface, a lamp mounted in the housing body at the focal point of the reflector surface, and a dual light transmitting unit supported at an outer side of the housing body. The dual light transmitting unit includes a light transmitting disk component of circular shape fixed in abutting relation to the housing body, and a light transmitting disk cover component mounted for rotative movement about the central axis of the housing body and against the light transmitting disk. The light transmitting disk component is of generally circular shape and has an inner portion removed to form a substantially semi-circular opening.
Abstract: A trunk lid lamp assembly comprising a housing having a first generally tubular part having open ends and a second generally tubular part having a closed end wall with interengaging means which provide a snap fit between said parts. The first part has an axially extending slot into which an offset portion of a bracket extends. The bracket has an L-shaped bayonet slot therein which is exposed to the interior of the first part whereby it may receive the lug of a lamp bulb and hold the bulb in position in the first part. The second part has a portion engaging the bracket to hold the bracket in position in the slot of the first part. The second part also has an axially extending opening in the end wall thereof adjacent the periphery thereof and a terminal extends into the opening and is frictionally held in position. The terminal has a first contact portion.

Abstract: Compositions comprising organic phosphorus compounds having a peroxygen group which is either a hydroperoxyalkyl (H--OO--C--) group or a peroxyether (--C--OO--C--) group. There is at least one such group per 500 phosphorus atoms in the composition. These peroxygen compounds may be made by passing oxygen through a liquid comprising a phosphorus compound which has an aliphatic carbon, having an abstractable hydrogen, directly attached to a carbon of an aryl ring; for example, an isopropylphenyl phosphate. The peroxygen compounds may be added to compositions comprising peroxide-reactive organic polymers to increase flame resistance.
Abstract: A flashlight having side by side compartments for storage and a battery respectively. The battery compartment has partial dividers for confining the battery and leaving a space for a contact strip having a leg portion on which the battery sits. A snap in divider fits above the battery to hold a lamp, and the top of the contact strip is bent inwardly to make contact with the base of the lamp. Different color light transmitting caps can be put over the lamp so that the flashlight can be used for spectator voting or approval. Preferably different color caps can be kept in the storage compartment.
